A food processing consultant helps you decide what to make, how big to build and which approvals to file before you spend on machinery. NPCS advises on plants that clean, mill, process, preserve or pack grains, dairy, oils, spices, fruits, vegetables, snacks, poultry and packaged water. Most clients come to us with a rough idea and a budget. We turn that into a project report covering process, machinery, raw materials and costs, so your decision rests on numbers specific to your capacity and location.
Food Processing Business Ideas in India: Where Demand Sits
Food processing business ideas in India work best when they match a clear buyer and a steady local supply of farm produce. Three forces support demand: a shift to branded packaged food, a low processing share of farm output, and exports. The projects NPCS covers fall into these groups:
Main buyer groups
- Grain and starch: wheat flour, rice, millets, maize starch, pasta and vermicelli
- Dairy, poultry and oils: milk products, edible oil refining, poultry farms
- Fruit, vegetable and nuts: potato, cashew, pulp, jams and pickles
- Spices, bakery and beverages: spice grinding, biscuits, bread and packaged water

Planning a Different Food Processing Project?
These are a few of the projects we advise on. NPCS's published client list records 223 food and agro processing assignments, so tell us what you are planning.
How to Choose the Right Food Processing Project
Start with raw material you can buy reliably, then check the regulations and the market for the finished product. A Rice Mill or Wheat Flour Mill depends on grain supply nearby, while a Dairy Plant depends on milk collection routes. Jaggery and Millet units can start small, whereas an Edible Oil Refinery or Maize Starch plant needs larger capital and tighter process control. A food processing project consultant can compare two or three options against your budget before you commit.

Common Licences for Food Processing Plants
Almost every food unit needs an FSSAI licence, State or Central depending on the business, plus Legal Metrology registration for packed goods. Packaged water and milk powder also need BIS certification, and exporters register with APEDA, Spices Board or CEPCI. If you run a boiler, IBR approval applies. Pollution category usually runs from Green to Orange based on wastewater, though integrated dairies and grain distilleries fall in Red.

Food Processing Schemes and Recent Policy Changes
Several schemes support food processing, including PMFME, PMKSY, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, Operation Greens and the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund. States also run their own food-processing policies. On tax, GST 2.0 moved most processed foods to 5% and UHT milk and pre-packed paneer to nil from September 2025. A well-prepared food processing project report supports your application, though each lender and agency sets its own terms.

Food Processing: Frequently Asked Questions
What does a food processing consultant do?
A food processing consultant helps you select a project, size the plant, choose machinery and technology, and prepare the project report. NPCS also guides you on approvals and finance papers, so your plan is ready for banks and regulators.
Which food processing projects does NPCS cover?
NPCS covers wheat flour mills, rice mills, dairy plants, edible oil refineries, spice units, bakeries, potato, cashew, pasta, millet, jaggery and maize starch plants, plus packaged water and poultry farms. Share your interest and we will suggest a fit.
Which licences are needed to start a food processing unit?
An FSSAI licence is the starting point, along with Legal Metrology registration for packed products. Packaged water and milk powder need BIS, and export units need APEDA, Spices Board or CEPCI registration. Requirements vary by product and scale.
Is a pollution control consent required for food plants?
Yes, most food units need consent from the State Pollution Control Board. The category usually ranges from Green to Orange depending on wastewater, while integrated dairies and grain distilleries are Red. Your project report should confirm the category for your process.
How can I get a food processing project report from NPCS?
Share your product, planned capacity and location with our team. We prepare a report covering process, machinery, raw materials, land, manpower and financials, tailored to your plan, and you can reach us by phone, WhatsApp or email.
