Mineral: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. India is one of the world's most naturally endowed lands. India is home to numerous minerals which benefit the country economically. The minerals produced in India constitute one-quarter of the world's most popular mineral resources.

RESOURCES:

West Bengal stands third in the country in terms of mineral production. The state contributes about one-fifth to the total production of minerals in the country. Coal constitutes 99% of the minerals extracted in West Bengal; fireclay, china clay, limestone, copper, iron, wolfram, manganese and dolomite are mined in small quantities. There are good possibilities of obtaining mineral oil and natural gas in the areas near the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal is the third largest state for coal production, accounting for about half of India's total. Lignite mined in Darjeeling is used to make briquettes. West Bengal ranks next to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in production of fireclay. China clay used in the pottery, paper, textile, rubber and paint industries are unearthed at Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and Mejia in Bankura. Limestone which is used in cement industry is mined in Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. There are copper mines in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Small quantities of low quality iron-ore are mined in Bardhaman, Purulia, Birbhum and Darjeeling. There are manganese in the Jhargram region of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bardhaman. The state’s production of dolomite comes from the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Keeping pace with the liberalised Mineral Policy being adopted by the Government of India, Government of West Bengal has formulated its Mineral Policy in 2002. Among the basic objectives of the West Bengal Mineral Policy, 2002 following are worth mentioning:

Iron and Steel: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

India has one of the richest reserves of all the raw materials required for the industry, namely land, capital, cheap labour, iron ore, power, coal etc. Yet India is 5th in the world ranking for production of steel. Iron and steel is basis for laying the vibrant Indian industry. Production of steel has come to exist as an index of a country's potential, industrial and economic growth. The making of iron and steel had been known to the people of India since long. The iron pillar of Delhi is a proof of it and speaks of the quality of steel produced in this country in ancient times. The steel industry is often considered to be an indicator of economic progress, because of the critical role played by steel in infrastructural and overall economic development. The per capita usage of steel gives an indication of the technological advancement of a nation.

RESOURCES:

The growth of steel industry in the State is largely related to the proximity of raw materials, skilled manpower, port facilities and the vast market for steel products. Given these location advantages, large numbers of mini integrated steel plants have already been set up in the state manufacturing a wide range of products such as sponge irons, mild steels, iron pipes etc. The neighbouring Eastern States of India viz. Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh are endowed with huge iron ore reserves along with cooking coal and non-cooking coal. The establishment of Bengal Iron Works at Kulti in Burdwan district of West Bengal in 1870 where the first commercial blast furnace was set up in 1875 heralded the commencement of this industry in the State.

The easy availability of power, competitive rates of freight, close proximity to areas with natural resources relevant to the industry, and labour force traditionality skilled in operating iron and steel units are factors that have influenced the surge in investment in this sector.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Waste management is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and the process is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources. The management of wastes treats all materials as a single class, whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, and tried to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of each through different methods.

RESOURCES:

There are 609 hazardous waste generating units in West Bengal. Amongst the nineteen districts of the state, two districts (Darjeeling and South Dinajpur) do not generate hazardous waste. The total quantum of hazardous waste generation from West Bengal is 2,59,776.24 metric tonnes per annum. (MTPA), out of which 46 per cent (1,20,596.41 MTPA) is landfillable, 49 per cent (1,26,596.38 MTPA) is recyclable and the remaining 5 per cent (12,583.45 MTPA) is incinerable by nature. Interestingly, it was observed that the majority of hazardous waste generating units in the state is small and is generating meagre quantity of waste, whereas the units generating substantial amount of hazardous wastes are limited in number.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The Central Government notified the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules 2000 under Sections 3, 6 and 25 of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 for the purpose of managing municipal and urban wastes/garbage in an environmentally sound manner. Cenosphere Processing Plant

Cenosphere Processing Plant. Cenosphere Separation from Fly Ash. Production of Cenospheres from Coal Fly Ash. Cenospheres are inert, light weight and hollow spheres particularly made of alumina or silica and filled with inert gases or air. They are typically manufactured as a by-product of coal combustion in the thermal power plants. Cenospheres are hollow, low-density, spherical, and free-flowing aluminosilicate microspheres that are produced as a by-product of coal ignition at the coal-fired power plants. It is a rich-in-ceramic industrial waste formed at the time of coal combustion in the thermal power plants. Inside the each sphere there is a near vacuum that produces good properties of thermal and acoustic insulation making a product ideal for automotive acoustic insulation applications where the mass is a major factor to be considered. These spheres are used globally in several automotive application including tyres, brake linings, friction linings, dashboard, and clutch facings. The broad range of usage has increased the demand of cenosphere suppliers India in the industry. Cenospheres, the high strength, small sized, lightweight, non-porous, free flowing, hollow ceramic spheres produced in coal fired thermal power plants during the burning of lignite or coal at very elevated temperatures, find extensive usage across a number of industries owing to their physical properties. Cenospheres find usage as fillers in a number of applications, replacing resins and minerals and imparting diverse benefits such as reduced shrinkage, improved level of thermal insulation, weight reduction, improved level of fire resistance, and easier application. Uses of Cenosphere: Cenospheres in Paints and Coatings There are a great many uses for cenospheres in the paint and industrial coating industry, due to the additional qualities they provide. For example, cenospheres are often used in coatings to control infrared radiation, giving those coatings an advantage over ones that merely attempt to limit thermal conductivity. Cenospheres in Syntactic Foams Cenospheres are often used to make ‘syntactic foams’. These are specialized solids which use cenospheres as a filler to provide any number of advantages, from lower cost, to added strength, sound proofing, buoyancy and thermal protection. Cenospheres in Plastics and Polymers Cenospheres also have a use in the manufacture of plastics and polymers, as their re-formable shape or strength helps to avoid shrinkage in thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Cenospheres in Pharmaceuticals Cenospheres have been used in the pharmaceutical industry for many years, as the small balls can act as a near-perfect transport device when coated with drugs. Cenospheres in Advanced Industries Cenospheres are also being used in the development of metal matrix composites (MMC), a variety of materials that attempts to combine the high energy absorption, impact resistance, and low density of the spheres with the qualities of other substances. Market Outlook Cenospheres are providing emerging opportunities along with the future effects of major drivers and challenges that support the managers to make cost-effective decisions in favor of the business. The increasing demand from end-use industries including refractory, construction, paints and coatings, and oil and gas, which is expected to take the market to the next level in the near future. However, restricted sources of raw material and deficiency of quality control across developing countries are key factors that may restrain the growth of the industry. The global cenospheres market was valued at USD 346.8 Million in 2016 and is projected to reach USD 689.2 Million by 2022, at a CAGR of 12.16% from 2017 to 2022. The growing demand from end-use industries, such as paints & coatings, refractory, construction, and oil & gas is expected to drive the market in near future. However, limited sources of raw material and lack of quality control across emerging countries are major factors that may restrain the growth of the market. The Gray Cenospheres segment is estimated to experience the highest growth in the upcoming years because of its wide uses across the industrial segment. The demand will increase also because the gray cenosphere is produced more frequently as compared to the white cenosphere in fly ash. The demand for gray cenosphere suppliers India is rising because they deliver quality material which contains a low content of alumina and is high in silica and iron content that is used in a number of applications such as plastics, concretes, coatings, resins, bricks, and rubbers. The gray cenospheres segment is expected to witness the highest growth from 2017 to 2022, as they are widely used across industries. Gray cenospheres occur more frequently than white cenospheres in fly ash. These cenospheres have low content of alumina and high content of silica and iron. Gray cenospheres are used in various applications, such as concretes, plastics, resins, coatings, bricks, and rubbers. North America is projected to be the fastest-growing cenospheres market during the forecast period, due to the growing oil & gas and automotive industries in the region. The market in Middle East & Africa, Asia-Pacific, and South America is also expected to witness significant growth, due to growing demand for cenospheres from the oil & gas and construction industries in these regions. Industries such as oil and gas, building, plastics, aerospace, automotive, and surface coating continue to be some of the leading consumers of cenospheres and new application areas are being devised at an encouraging pace. Owing to their natural properties, cenospheres can be used in forms such as dry, wet, or slurry. Owing to their inert nature, cenospheres are not affected by acids, alkalis, water, or solvents. Hence, cenospheres have an impressive reusability quotient. Cenospheres are nearly 30% lighter than conventionally used resins and nearly 75% lighter than most minerals used as fillers or extenders. The main application of cenospheres as bulk fillers in all the end-user industries is expected to act as catalysts for the growth of the overall cenospheres market over the forecast period. Moreover, as cenospheres are small in size and have great compressive strength they are used as a structural lightweight filler, thus the cenospheres market is expected to see rapid growth in all developed and developing countries in the future. The cenospheres market can be segmented as: • Automotive • Construction • Oil & Gas • Paints & Coating • Others (Refractory, Bulk Fillers, Etc.) Production of Crosslinked Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose

Production of Crosslinked Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose. Cross-Linked CMC Manufacturing Industry. Cross-Linked Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose Manufacturing Project. Croscarmellose Sodium or Modified Cellulose Gum Cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is also known as croscarmellose sodium or modified cellulose gum. Cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is semi synthetic polysaccharide that consists of glucose monomer chains which form a major component of plant cell walls and fibres. Crosslinked sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), croscarmellose, is prepared by the reaction of Na-CMC with acids. Croscarmellose is used as dietary supplements, sweetener tablets, and medicines. The chapter provides nutritional properties of crosslinked sodium CMC. Cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is manufactured by acidifying an aqueous suspension of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and heating the suspension to achieve cross-linking. The product is then washed and dried. It is also produced during the manufacture of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose by lowering the pH and heating to cause cross-linking. Cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is used in tablets of table-top sweeteners and dietary food supplements, as it facilitates disintegration in aqueous solutions, with a maximum level of use of 30 g/kg. It is also widely used as an excipient in pharmaceutical applications. Cyanoacetic Acid

Cyanoacetic acid is an organic compound. It is a white, hygroscopic solid. The compound contains two functional groups, a nitrile and a carboxylic acid. It is a precursor to cyanoacrylates, components of adhesives. The largest scale reaction is its esterification to give ethyl cyanoacrylate. Cyanoacetic acid is a versatile intermediate in the preparation of chemicals. It is a precursor to synthetic caffeine via the intermediacy of theophylline. It is a building block for many drugs, including dextromethorphan, amiloride, sulfadimethoxine, and allopurinol. Synthesis of cyanoacetic acid by carbon dioxide and electrogenerated acetonitrile anion in undivided cells equipped with sacrificial anodes: The electrochemical synthesis of cyanoacetic acid was performed by cathodic reduction of tetra alkyl ammonium salts (R4NX) in acetonitrile in undivided cells equipped with sacrificial anodes with concomitant or subsequent addition of carbon dioxide. These syntheses avoid the use of dangerous reagents, yield cyanoacetic acid in moderate faradic yields and confirm that the cathodic reduction of tetra alkyl ammonium salts in the presence of acetonitrile leads to the formation of the anion CNCH2-. As a whole it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest. Market Outlook Chemical industry is one of the oldest industries in India, which contributes significantly towards industrial and economic growth of the nation. Since this industry has numerous forward and backward linkages, it is called the backbone of the industrial and agricultural development of the country and provides building blocks for many downstream industries. The Chemical Industry of India ranks 6th in world and 3rd in Asia after Japan and China. In terms of global shipments of chemicals, India ranks 10th in the world. India’s chemical industry is likely to touch $214 billion (approx 13, 91,000 crore) in the next four years from $139 (approx 9, 03,500 crore) in fiscal 2014 with estimated growth of around 9 per cent a year amid growing demand scenario. The demand growth will be primarily driven by domestic consumption because per capita consumption of most of the chemicals is much lower than global averages. Disposable Baby Diaper Manufacturing Project

Disposable Baby Diaper Manufacturing Project. Baby Diaper Production. Disposable Nappies/Diapers Manufacturing Business. Disposable diapers are a great convenience in the modern world. A disposable diaper consists of an absorbent pad sandwiched between two sheets of nonwoven fabric. The pad is specially designed to absorb and retain body fluids, and the nonwoven fabric gives the diaper a comfortable shape and helps prevent leakage. These diapers are made by a multi-step process in which the absorbent pad is first vacuum-formed, then attached to a permeable top sheet and impermeable bottom sheet. The components are sealed together by application of heat or ultrasonic vibrations. Elastic fibers are attached to the sheets to gather the edges of the diaper into the proper shape so it fits snugly around a baby's legs and crotch. When properly fitted, the disposable diaper will retain body fluids which pass through the permeable top sheet and are absorbed into the pad. Advantages of Disposable Diapers: 1. They offer convenience Compared with cloth diapers, disposables are more convenient to use. Aside from being widely available in many specialty stores, they are also already available for online purchase. Another element of convenience is that you can just throw them away to the can after removing them, as opposed to cloth diapers that need to be soaked and washed. 2. They allow for quick changes Another huge benefit of using disposable diapers is the less time you spend on changing them, which would become lesser as you get used to doing it. As a result, changing would become more practical for you. 3. They can come as hypoallergenic, which is safe for babies. Whether your baby is suffering from a chemical or allergic reaction to the materials in standard diapers, you can choose hypoallergenic diapers that prevent common irritants as your best course of preventive treatment. However, it is important to keep in mind that, similar to cosmetics, hypoallergenic diapers do not have a controlled definition, and that some manufacturers would try to make claims for such products, while the truth is they could still cause a few adverse reactions. Market Outlook The diaper market in India is growing with more than 20% CAGR from the last seven years. The healthy growth rate is driven by factors such as millions of babies born per year, higher disposable incomes and the increased hygiene awareness of Indian mothers. While India has a vast population of around 1.2 billion, uptake of disposable diapers is still low compared with other developed markets. However, manufacturers believe that India could grow to become an even larger market than China in coming years. This potential growth has led major players to invest heavily on product innovation and development to get an upper hand over their competitors. The major brands have been using television based advertising to their full advantage and have raised the awareness of diapers in the country. The Indian diaper market has long been characterized by large fluctuations in the market share within short periods. Indian market is forecasted to grow much faster than any in the world, estimated at 20% CAGR compared to the global rate of 6.6%. The rapid pace of urbanization and the increasing number of modern nuclear families with both parents working will only add to the growing demand of disposable diapers in India. Depending on the type of absorbent material used in manufacturing, disposable diapers are also segmented into Ultra absorbent disposable diapers, Regular disposable diapers, super absorbent diapers and bio-degradable disposable diapers. Increase in disposable income and rising health care expenditures have driven the demand for baby diapers. The key factors which drive the growth of baby diapers market include frequent use of diapers to maintain hygiene and prevent rashes in babies’ skin. Additionally, increasing birth rate, rapid urbanization and continuously improving economic conditions in developing countries have fuelled the growth of baby diaper industry. Global baby diapers market is expected to garner $59.4 billion by 2020. The global baby diaper market covers different types of diapers provided by the manufacturers within the baby diapers. The different types of diapers manufactured around the globe are Cloth diapers, Disposable diapers, Training nappy, Swim pants and Bio-degradable diapers.
