Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. Karnataka is the 3rd largest producer of steel in India with a current production level of 10.70 Million Tons per annum. Both alloy and non-alloy steel are produced and the product range includes basic steels like pig iron and sponge iron, ingot, blooms, billets, slabs, finished products like long products CTD & TMT (bars & rods), wire rod, sections, bright bars, CR/HR coils. The export of steel from Karnataka is around 0.96 Million Tons.

It is one among 6 major steel producing states. Karnataka is the 2nd largest in the country in terms of iron ore reserves and largest exporter of iron ore in the country. Hence, it can share more than 40% of the steel demand in India which is estimated as 124 million tons by 2011-12 and 50% of the exports of finished steel products. Based on this estimate, Karnataka can host a manufacturing steel base for more than 100 million tons capacity per annum.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

India is the world's second largest producer of food next to China, and has the potential of being the biggest with the food and agricultural sector. The Indian food processing industry stands at $135 billion and is estimated to grow with a CAGR of 10 per cent to reach $200 billion by 2015. The food processing industry in India is witnessing rapid growth. With 10 agro-climatic zones and land topography highly suitable for agriculture, Karnataka is one of the most agriculturally diverse states in India. It is estimated that about 83 per cent of the geographic area of the state is suitable for agriculture, of which 64.60 per cent is under agricultural cultivation. Consequently, Karnataka is the largest producer of ragi, sunflower, tomato, coffee and arecanut and the second largest producer of maize, safflower, grapes, pomegranate and onion. The state is also the largest producer of spices, aromatic and medicinal plants in the country. In addition, the state has a wealth of livestock and marine resources that augur well for processing of dairy, meat, fish and shrimp. Karnataka, the report points out, also takes pride in having a strong and expanding infrastructure base for setting up food processing facilities in the state.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The promotion of Agro-based industries is among the priorities of the State Government. The state has assured supply of fruits & vegetables grown by applying scientific techniques, investment in post harvest and good transport infrastructure. The National Horticulture Mission (NHM) in the Jharkhand State was launched in late 2005-06 initially in 10 districts with main focus on production of planting materials, vegetable seed production, establishment of new gardens, creation of water resources etc. Establishment of new gardens include perennial and non perennial fruits, spices, floriculture, aromatic and medicinal plants. This scheme was 100 % sponsored by Central Govt. during 2005-06 and 2006-07 (Xth Five Year Plan). However, during 2007-08 and onwards (XIth Five Year Plan) this scheme has been implemented in 15 districts with the pattern of assistance as 85:15 by Central Govt. and State Govt. respectively. The Jharkhand government has decided to set up a food park to kick off the development of the food processing sector in the state and attract investors. In general very few small scale food processing industries are present in the state.

Specific incentives are also provided, like entry tax reimbursement, stamp duty reimbursement, up to 25% waiver on land acquisition charges, subsidy on power and capacity building support.

 

 

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The Ministry of Textiles in India has formulated numerous policies and schemes for the development of the textile industry in India. The government of India has been following a policy of promoting and encouraging the handloom sector through a number of programmes. Most of the schematic interventions of the government of India in the ninth and tenth plan period have been through the state agencies and co-operative societies in the handloom industries. Some of the major acts relating to textile industry include: Central Silk Board Act, 1948, The Textiles Committee Act, 1963, The Handlooms Act, 1985, Cotton Control Order, 1986, The Textile Undertakings Act, 1995Government of India is earnestly trying to provide all the relevant facilities for the textile industry to utilize its full potential and achieve the target. The textile industry is presently experiencing an average annual growth rate of 9-10% and is expected to grow at a rate of 16% in value, which will eventually reach the target of US $ 115 billion by 2012. Excluding the cost of land (around Rs 60 crore) that has already been acquired, the cluster will involve an investment of Rs 100 crore. The infrastructure support would be comprehensive, right from advance computing facilities to treated water necessary for biotech infrastructure services.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

·         The Karnataka government has announced a biotech policy to promote this sector and is setting up an institute for bioinformatics in Banglore.

• In addition the state government is also creating a biotechnology fund that will have inflows from the biotech companies. This could be used for incubation of new projects and promotion of the sector in the state.

• Karnataka government is putting in Rs. 50 million and an equal amount is being brought by ICICI to develop the institute if bioinformatics in Banglore. Karnataka has planned to launch India's first state sponsored biotechnology venture capital fund to boost their initiatives.

·         Three 'biotech parks' are emerging in the state , namely 'university of Agricultural Sciences, Banglore; 'Institute of Agri-biotech in Dharwad ; and Institute of Biotechnology in Karwar.

The total employment potential in these new projects is: 1.20 lakhs (direct + Indirect). Govt of India is currently implementing a project "National Automotive Testing R&D Infrastructure Project" (NATRIP) in Oragdam near Chennai at a project cost of about Rs.450 Crores. This project aims at facilitating introduction of world-class automotive safety, emission and performance standards in India as also ensure seamless integration of our automotive industry with the global industry.

Minerals are valuable natural resources being finite and non-renewable. They constitute the vital raw materials for many basic industries and are a major resource for development. Management of mineral resources has, therefore, to be closely integrated with the overall strategy of development; and exploitation of minerals is to be guided by long-term national goals and perspectives. Ministry of Mines is responsible for survey and exploration of all minerals, other than natural gases, petroleum and atomic minerals, for mining and metallurgy of non-ferrous metals like aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, gold, nickel, etc. and for administration of the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, 1957 in respect of all mines and minerals other than coal, natural gas and petroleum.

Karnataka is rich in its mineral wealth which is distributed fairly evenly across the state. Karnataka's Geological Survey department started in 1880 is one of the oldest in the country. Rich deposits of asbestos, bauxite, chromite, dolomite, gold, iron ore, kaolin, limestone, magnesite, Manganese, ochre, quartz and silica sand are found in the state. Karnataka is also a major producer of felsite, moulding sand (63%) and fuchsite quartzite (57%) in the country.

Karnataka has two major centers of gold mining in the state at Kolar and Raichur. These mines produce about 3000 kg of gold per annum which accounts for almost 84% of the country's production. Karnataka has very rich deposits of high grade iron and manganese ores to the tune of 1,000 million tonnes. Most of the iron ores are concentrated around the Bellary-Hospet region. Karnataka with a granite rock spread of over 4200 km² is also famous for its Ornamental Granites with different hues.

 

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The  role to be played by the Central and State Governments in  regard  to  mineral  development has  been  extensively  dealt in  the  Mines  and Minerals (Development and Regulation)  Act, 1957  and Rules  made under the Act by  the  Central  Government and  the  State  Governments in their  respective  domains.   The provisions  of  the  Act  and the Rules  will  be  reviewed  and  harmonised  with  the basic features of the new  National Mineral  Policy.  In future the core functions of the State in mining will be facilitation and regulation of exploration and mining activities of investors and entrepreneurs, provision of infrastructure and tax collection.  In mining activities, there shall be arms length distance between State agencies (Public Sector Undertakings) that mine and those that regulate.  There shall be transparency and fair play in the reservation of ore bodies to State agencies on such areas where private players are not holding or have not applied for exploration or mining, unless security considerations or specific public interests are involved. Recently, the Union Government after reviewing the current mining sector, mineral development and keeping in view the availability of the valuable finite resource have announced the National Mineral Policy (NMP))- 2010. Research organisations, including the National Mineral Processing Laboratories of the Indian Bureau of Mines should be strengthened for development of processes for beneficiation and mineral and elemental analysis of ores and ore dressing products. There shall be co-operation between and co-ordination among all organisations in public and private sector engaged in this task.

Waste to Wealth-Value Recovery from Agricultural and Industrial Biomass Residues. Furfural from Lignocellulosic Biomass. Production of Furfural from Sugarcane Bagasse and Corncobs. The concept of waste as a material “which has no use” is changing to that of seeing waste as a resource by converting into secondary material with modification. Wastes can thus be converted into useful resources used at home or even sold for wealth. Waste recycling involves the collection of discarded materials such as Sugarcane Bagasse, Corncobs etc and processing these materials, and turning them into new products. Furfural is a chemical made out of organic matter which is typically produced for industrial purposes. It is primarily composed of agricultural byproducts such as oat husks, bran, corncobs, and sawdust. Some of the products it is used in include weed killer, fungicide, and solvent. It is also a familiar element in the production of transportation fuels and in the process of refining lubricating oils. The chemical is an element in the production of several other industrial agents as well. Bagasse is a waste product from the sugar industry, which is usually used as energy source in factory at present. However, the amount of bagasse left is still high enough for more value-added product for example furfural. Bagasse is a good source of pentosan and containing about 25 to 27%. The main objective of the research was to produce furfural from bagasse. The main raw material for the production furfural was bagasse and some chemicals/ingredients were used (H2SO4, water, NaCl). Furfural is an important chemical because it is a selective solvent for separating saturated and unsaturated compounds in petroleum refining, gas, oil and diesel fuel, and for the high demand of its derivatives, especially furfuryl alcohol, used mainly in the production of furan resins for foundry sand binders, which is considered the major market for furfural. USES Furfural is used as a solvent in petrochemical refining to extract dienes from other hydrocarbons. Furfural, as well as its derivative furfuryl alcohol, can be used together with phenol, acetone, or urea to make solid resins. It is commonly used as a solvent; it is soluble in ethanol and ether and somewhat soluble in water. Furfural is the aldehyde of pyromucic acid; it has properties similar to those of benzaldehyde. A derivative of furan, it is prepared commercially by dehydration of pentose sugars obtained from cornstalks and corncobs, husks of oat and peanut, and other waste products. It is used in the manufacture of pesticides, phenol furfural resins, and tetrahydrofuran. Tetrahydrofuran is used as a commercial solvent and is converted in starting materials for the preparation of nylon. Furfural is used as a solvent in petrochemical refining to extract dienes (which are used to make synthetic rubber) from other hydrocarbons. Few Indian major players are as under • MA CAgro Inds. Production of Alcohol from Grains. Grain Alcohol Distillery Project. Food-Grain Based Alcohol Industry. Distilled Spirit - Alcoholic Beverage Grain based alcohol is used for the production of white spirit such as gin and vodka but also as a base for a wide range of flavoured alcoholic beverages. The production of neutral alcohol from malt, grape, apple or sugar has considerably increased over the last few years. There may be local alcohol taxation advantages. This is available in a ready-to-pitch, active form, with proven cost effectiveness versus propagation. Extra-Neutral Alcohol (ENA) is an ethanol grade of 96% purity or higher. Its main use is as the base ingredient in the production of alcoholic spirits. The Extra Neutral alcohol or ENA is a high distillated alcohol without any impurities and others destined to be used in the high cosmetic industry, perfumeries as well as for the production of alcoholic beverages such as whisky, vodka, gin, cane, liqueurs and alcoholic fruit beverages and aperitifs. Till now, molasses is used as raw material for alcohol production. Molasses, a by–product from cane sugar processing, is brownish black in colour with an extremely strong odour. It is used for its sugar content, either as an ingredient in cattle feed or for production of alcohol. Some of the derivatives from alcohol that have been in commercial production are based on molasses as a raw material. Molasses based distilleries produce effluent, which has high BOD/COD as well as dark brown colour and is very difficult to treat. Molasses production in the country is around 70 to 75 Lakh MT per annum. Some of the molasses is consumed to manufacture animal feed. If all of the molasses produced in the country were used for alcohol production, it would produce maximum 1,750 million liters of alcohol. The demand for alcohol in the country is expected to go up to almost 3000 to 3500 million liters by year 2012. Under such circumstances, raw materials other than molasses will have to be used for alcohol production. Though alcohol can be produced directly from sugar cane juice it is not an economic proposal because of its minimum statutory price. On an average, in Maharashtra, the landing price of sugarcane to the sugar factories varies from Rs. 2,000 to 4,000 / MT depending up on availability. In addition, it is a seasonal crop available for about 160 days in a year. Sugar cane cultivation also requires good irrigation facilities. If sugar cane juice is used directly for alcohol production, there will be no by-products produced except Bagasse. There are some distinct advantages of using corn or sorghum for alcohol production. It produces a by-product called ‘Distillers Dry Grain with Soluble’s (DDGS)’ which can be sold as high protein containing animal feed. Quality of alcohol produced from grains is far better than that produced from molasses and thus fetches higher price. CO2 produced during grain alcoholic fermentation after proper processing is of food grade quality. Maize or sorghum or bajara crop cultivation period is about four months and requires comparatively very less irrigation water The process water requirement in case of a grain-based distillery is quite less than its molasses based counterpart, which ultimately saves cost component towards water charges. Market Outlook The Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) segment was estimated to reach a market valuation in excess of INR 1,400 Bn by 2016 end. This reflected a Y-o-Y growth rate of close to 5% over 2015. This segment is estimated to be valued at more than INR 3,000 Bn by 2026, expanding at a CAGR of 5.2% over the forecast period. Indian Made Foreign Liquor segment in the India alcohol market is expected to create absolute INR opportunity of close to INR 80 Bn in 2017 over 2016. Commonly gypsum boards used in walls and ceilings, in moist areas, in exterior applications, for fire resistance and area separation and special systems. Gypsum plaster board (GPB) popularly known as gypboard, is a low cost, light weight construction material made from aerated gypsum plaster and produced in varying thicknesses suitable for different applications. Gypsum is an important raw material used in the manufacture of cement. Consumption of gypsum varies from 2 to 6% in different plants depending upon the quality of clinker. India has good reserves of natural gypsum, mainly concentrated in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Besides, a number of chemical industries obtain gypsum as a byproduct in the form of phospho gypsum. The chemical gypsum can be utilised as a whole or as part substitute to natural gypsum. Many cement plants, which are located near the source of phosphogypsum are using this substitute product. Types of Gypsum Plaster Board Gypsum plaster boards are classified according to their use. Gypsum wall board has a face to which decoration may be applied. There are five types of gypsum board product that are considered standard. Innovation has created several new products now available. • Standard Gypsum Board: Regular core, Flexible board, Type “X”- fire resistant, Moisture resistant and Plaster baseboard. • Specialty Gypsum Board: Interior ceiling board, Mold & Moisture resistant, Shaft liner, Abuse resistant and Impact resistant.
