Paint Industry

Paint is any liquid, liquefiable, or mastic composition that, after application to a substrate in a thin layer, converts to a solid film. It is most commonly used to protect, color, or provide texture to objects. Paint can be made or purchased in many colors—and in many different types, such as watercolor, synthetic, etc. Paint is typically stored, sold, and applied as a liquid, but dries into a solid. Paint was made with the yolk of eggs and therefore, the substance would harden and adhere to the surface it was applied to. Pigment was made from plants, sand, and different soils. Most paints used either oil or water as a base (the dilutant, solvent or vehicle for the pigment). A still extant example of 17th-century house oil painting is Ham House in Surrey, England, where a primer was used along with several undercoats and an elaborate decorative overcoat; the pigment and oil mixture would have been ground into a paste with a mortar and pestle. The paints industry in India has been growing at the rate of around 12% a year. The paints market has crossed the Rs. 135bn mark. By volume, the market is estimated at 1.4mn tonne which is growing at an average annual growth of over 6 to 8% (12% by value). The unorganized sector, shrunk in the recent years, still commands a share of 46% (by volume) and 35% (by value). The paints are segmented principally into industrial and decorative paints.
