Indian engineering industry is a major contributor to the country’s economy. Between 2003-04 and 2007-08, the sector witnessed a compounded annual growth rate of 33.84 per cent in exports.The US and Europe account for about 30 to 40 per cent of our total exports.

The engineering industry comprises of both heavy and light engineering sectors. The heavy engineering market contributes to about 80% of the net engineering production. The segments in these sub sectors are diverse including power equipment manufacturer, electrical and non-electrical manufacturer, and static equipment manufacturer. The industry is less fragmented at the top but highly fragmented at the bottom. The export growth of the engineering goods at 37.9% which was the fastest in the manufacturing segment. The segments which contributed to this were machinery and instruments, iron and steel, and other engineering items.

Another focus of the industry is the engineering process outsourcing (EPO) services from India. India is a favorite destination of big automotive and aerospace companies like Ford, and General Motors. The EPO market is expected to cross US$ 40 billion by 2020, which will increase the global market share of India to 32% from the current 12% in the same segment. Demand in the engineering industry segment is driven by investments and capacity creation in core sectors like power, infrastructure developments, mining, oil and other sectors like the general manufacturing sector, automotive and process industries, and consumer goods industry. Hot dip galvanizing is a process in which an adherent, protective coating of zinc compounds is developed on the surface of iron and steel products by immersing them in a bath of molten zinc. The protective coatings usually consists of several layers. Alloy steel plate is also rolled for bridge building. The plate must have a smooth, clean surface, free of blister scabs, blowholes, cracks and laps. Very important product of steel industry and its requirement in India is only going to multiply with time. India is producing over 3 million tonnes of wire rods per annum and is already in the export market with good reputation. It has very good market demand now days.

Residual rocks, in which the alumina trihydrate and monohydrate minerals gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore predominate are classified as bauxite. Other residual minerals are developed in the unique type of rock weathering which produces bauxites, and these minerals kaolinite, halloysite, goethite, hematite, magnetites, anatase, quartz and some phosphatic and manganiferous minerals may form the lesser constituents of bauxites. Since bauxites have formed from a variety of rock types, minor quantities of residual minerals resistant to weathering. Traces of the elements barium, boron, carbon, bismuth, beryllium calcium, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, hafnium, gallium gold, yttrium, zinc, zirconium have been found in bauxites. Some of these elements are presumably present as secondary minerals, while other are present in unaltered mineral remnants. Halloysite is rare in older bauxites, but it is a common constituent of younger bauxites and with quartz is usually the main constituent of the residual clays underlying younger bauxites. The alumina hydrates and hydrous Aluminium silicates of bauxites are derived chiefly from the weathering of felspathoids and felspars of igneous, volcanic, and metamorphic rocks, form Aluminium silicates, felspars, micas and clay minerals of sedimentary and metamoriphic rocks, and from the less soluble minerals in particularly pure calcareous limestone. Some alumina hydrates and hydrous Aluminium silicates are produced also from the breakdown of amphiboles and pyroxenes in igneous, volcanic, and metamorphic rocks. Although certain almost pure calcareous rocks from bauxite, no bauxite has been found which is known to be derived from coarde high silica or ultra basic rocks. The colour of bauxites, which varies from white, cream, yellow, green, gray, pink, brown, red to black, and particle size of the iron minerals in the bauxites and is unrelaled to the alumina hydrate minerals.
