Cashew value added Products and Projects

As the cornerstone of an industry that intricately blends tradition with innovation, this page serves as a gateway to a realm where business ideas flourish amidst the backdrop of India's dominant stance in the global cashew market. Recognized as the largest producer, processor, and exporter of cashew kernels worldwide, and the second largest consumer, India's relationship with this wonder nut is steeped in a rich tapestry of cultural and economic significance.

The industry's backbone is its highly labor-intensive processing activities, which are distributed across multiple factories within the country, with centralized grading and packaging operations to meet marketable quantity demands. This strategic arrangement underscores the sector's reliance on imported raw materials for value addition, setting the stage for a competitive export market. Yet, it is this very dependency that amplifies the call for increased domestic production—a critical lever for the industry's sustenance and growth. Current domestic production levels hover around half of the annual requirement of 12 lakh tonnes of cashew, highlighting a gap that presents both a challenge and an opportunity for new entrants.

The states of Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala emerge as the principal cashew producers in India, contributing to a vibrant domestic market that's projected to grow at an annual rate of 8-10%. This growth is not just limited to the raw nut but extends to an array of cashew kernels—whether raw, salted, or roasted—and derivatives like Cashew Nut Shell Liquid, showcasing the sector's diverse product portfolio. India's prowess in cashew production is further complemented by its import strategy, where approximately seven lakh tonnes of raw cashew are imported annually to fulfill the processing sector's needs, in addition to the five lakh tonnes domestically produced.

This backdrop sets the stage for a market that's ripe with potential. The demand for processed cashew nuts, both within India and globally, is on an upward trajectory. The export market for cashew kernels is particularly promising, with anticipated growth in value to Rs 2,500 crore from Rs 2,288.90 crore in 2007-08, underpinned by a 5% increase in export volumes in the coming years, as estimated by the Cashew Promotion Council of India. This potential for significant revenue generation, combined with the rising domestic consumption, presents a lucrative canvas for entrepreneurs and startups.

Entering the cashew industry is an attractive proposition for several reasons. Beyond the financial gains, participants contribute to the value chain of a product that's integral to numerous Indian culinary traditions, thus preserving and promoting a cultural legacy. Moreover, the industry's dependency on labor-intensive processes translates into job creation, aligning entrepreneurial ventures with social impact goals.

For new entrants, the government plays a pivotal role in easing the journey. Various facilities and incentives, ranging from subsidies for setting up processing units to assistance in procuring advanced machinery and technology, are designed to lower the barrier to entry and encourage sustainable practices. These initiatives not only support the industry's growth but also ensure that India retains its leadership position in the global cashew market.

The future of the cashew industry in India is marked by boundless growth opportunities. With the government's push towards self-sufficiency in raw cashew production and the expanding global appetite for cashew-based products, the sector is poised for a transformative journey. Entrepreneurs and startups venturing into this space can look forward to tapping into a market that's not just economically rewarding but also offers the satisfaction of contributing to the nation's agricultural and industrial progress.

The "Cashew Value Added Products and Projects" category page is not just a repository of business ideas; it's a launchpad for ventures that aspire to blend profitability with sustainability. As the industry continues to evolve, driven by innovation and bolstered by supportive government policies, the prospects for entrepreneurs and startups have never been brighter. This page, therefore, stands as a testament to the myriad opportunities that await those ready to venture into the vibrant world of cashew processing and trade in India.

CARDANOL from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities

Cardanol is a naturally occurring phenol manufactured from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), a by product of cashew nut processing. Distillation of CNSL under reduced pressure gives cardanol. The residue will be rich in cardanol which is conveniently used in friction dust for brake lining, also in rubber compounding formulation. Cardanol phenol resin was developed in the 1920s by Mortimer T. Harvey a student of Columbia University. Cardanol is a phenol obtained from anacardic acid, the main component of CNSL, a by product of cashew nut processing. Cardanol based resin posses an outstanding resistance to acid and alkalies. Chlorinated cardanol is reported to have good insecticidal, pesticidal and germicidal properties. Co-polymer of cardanol with other film forming material give good quality lacquer giving golden yellow films both of drying and baking type. India is one of the leading countries in commercial processing of raw cashew nut. Quillon in Kerala state is into majorly processing of shell. Cashew nut shell occupy a important place in India export. There is wide scope for new entrepreneurs to venture into this project.

The cashew adapts to various types of soils and climatic conditions and is hardy and draught resistant tree. Indian cashew industry is characterized by a marked cultural dualism between small scale growers and corporate sectors. Cashew is cultivated in India over an area of 0.77 million ha. At present India has a processing capacity over 1 million tonnes from 1098 processing units generating employment to over 0.5 million people in farms and factories. In the factory sector, 95 per cent are women workers from the lowest strata of the society. India exports nearly 65 per cent of the world cashew export to different destinations all over the world. More than 50 percent of the domestic production is consumed in the domestic market. USES OF CASHEW: Cashews have served nutritional, medicinal and wartime needs. More recently, they have been used in the manufacture of adhesives, resins and natural insecticides. During World War II, the cashew tree became highly prized as the source of valuable oil drawn from the shell. The cashew kernel is a rich source of fat (46 percent) and protein (18 percent) and is a good source of calcium, phosphorus and iron. It has a high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, in particular, the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. The tart apple is a source of vitamin C, calcium and iron. The bark, leaves, gum and shell are all used in medicinal applications. The leaves and bark are commonly used to relieve toothache and sore gums, and the boiled water extract of the leaf or bark is used as a mouth wash. MARKET SCENARIO: The Indian Cashew industry is almost export oriented. In Indian cashew processing factories, over 95 per cent of the workers are women.
