Mineral: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. India is one of the world's most naturally endowed lands. India is home to numerous minerals which benefit the country economically. The minerals produced in India constitute one-quarter of the world's most popular mineral resources.

RESOURCES:

West Bengal stands third in the country in terms of mineral production. The state contributes about one-fifth to the total production of minerals in the country. Coal constitutes 99% of the minerals extracted in West Bengal; fireclay, china clay, limestone, copper, iron, wolfram, manganese and dolomite are mined in small quantities. There are good possibilities of obtaining mineral oil and natural gas in the areas near the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal is the third largest state for coal production, accounting for about half of India's total. Lignite mined in Darjeeling is used to make briquettes. West Bengal ranks next to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in production of fireclay. China clay used in the pottery, paper, textile, rubber and paint industries are unearthed at Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and Mejia in Bankura. Limestone which is used in cement industry is mined in Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. There are copper mines in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Small quantities of low quality iron-ore are mined in Bardhaman, Purulia, Birbhum and Darjeeling. There are manganese in the Jhargram region of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bardhaman. The state’s production of dolomite comes from the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Keeping pace with the liberalised Mineral Policy being adopted by the Government of India, Government of West Bengal has formulated its Mineral Policy in 2002. Among the basic objectives of the West Bengal Mineral Policy, 2002 following are worth mentioning:

1. To review the existing State monopolies over mineral exploration and wherever required, go in for selective de-reservation.

2. To invite private capital, resources and technology, both foreign and domestic, for better exploration and exploitation;

3. To promote necessary linkages for smooth and uninterrupted development of mineral based industries to meet the needs of the State.

Iron and Steel: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

India has one of the richest reserves of all the raw materials required for the industry, namely land, capital, cheap labour, iron ore, power, coal etc. Yet India is 5th in the world ranking for production of steel. Iron and steel is basis for laying the vibrant Indian industry. Production of steel has come to exist as an index of a country's potential, industrial and economic growth. The making of iron and steel had been known to the people of India since long. The iron pillar of Delhi is a proof of it and speaks of the quality of steel produced in this country in ancient times. The steel industry is often considered to be an indicator of economic progress, because of the critical role played by steel in infrastructural and overall economic development. The per capita usage of steel gives an indication of the technological advancement of a nation.

RESOURCES:

The growth of steel industry in the State is largely related to the proximity of raw materials, skilled manpower, port facilities and the vast market for steel products. Given these location advantages, large numbers of mini integrated steel plants have already been set up in the state manufacturing a wide range of products such as sponge irons, mild steels, iron pipes etc. The neighbouring Eastern States of India viz. Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh are endowed with huge iron ore reserves along with cooking coal and non-cooking coal. The establishment of Bengal Iron Works at Kulti in Burdwan district of West Bengal in 1870 where the first commercial blast furnace was set up in 1875 heralded the commencement of this industry in the State.

The easy availability of power, competitive rates of freight, close proximity to areas with natural resources relevant to the industry, and labour force traditionality skilled in operating iron and steel units are factors that have influenced the surge in investment in this sector.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Essential Oils Extraction and Manufacturing Industry

Essential Oils Extraction and Manufacturing Industry. Jasmine and Tuberose Oil Extraction Business. Essential Oils from Flower Crops An essential oil is a natural product extracted from a single plant species. Not all plants produce essential oils, and in the plants that do, the essential oil may be found in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits. Essential oils, also called volatile odoriferous oil, are aromatic oily liquids extracted from different parts of plants, for example, leaves, peels, barks, flowers, buds, seeds, and so on. They can be extracted from plant materials by several methods, steam distillation, expression, and so on. Among all methods, for example, steam distillation method has been widely used, especially for commercial scale production. Essential oils have been widely used as food flavors. Essential oils have been known to possess antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, thereby serving as natural additives in foods and food products. Jasmine Essential Oil Jasmine essential oil, or technically Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum officinale) is a pricey and rarer oil to find. It has a sweet aroma (almost sickly sweet to some noses), very floral and stronger than the flowering plant itself. Jasmine oil is extracted from the flowers of Jasmine. Its scientific names are Jasminum Grandiflora (Royal Jasmine) and Jasminum Officinale (Common Jasmine). It is one of the most powerful, soothing, exotic and pleasant oils available. It is widely accepted for its ability to treat depressed people. This oil is also known to ease childbirth and has been used for many years now. Jasmine oil is also appreciated for its blending properties with other oils. Although expensive, this oil is preferred by many people around the world. The benefits and effects it has on the skin are innumerable. It is extremely effective in healing wound scars and stretch marks besides helping in treating dry skin. Tuberose Oil Tuberose oil is extracted from Polianthes tuberosa of the Agavaceae family and is also known as tuberosa and tubereuse. Polianthes tuberosa, is commonly known as Rajanigandha in India due to its night blooming fragrant flowers. It is small bulbous herb reaching upto height of 2-3 feets. It bears aromatic flowers and generally grown for oranmental purpose. The waxy, white and fragrant flowers on long spikes are mostly used as cut flowers for making garlands and extracting essential oil. There are also few medicinal uses of Polianthes tuberosa. Flowers are used in perfume industry and also diuretic and emetic activity. Bulbs are used as antigonorrhoea, diuretic, emetic and for curing rashes in infant. Market Outlook The essential oil is used across various industries such as agriculture, food and beverage industry, fragrance, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and retail. Its benefits range from good sleep, stress relief, pain relief, weight loss, body detoxification, mental alertness and stretch marks healing. Essential Oil Market is expected to reach $11.188 million by 2022, with a CAGR of 8.7% from 2016 to 2022. Essential oils, also known as volatile oils/aetherolea/ethereal oils, are derived from leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other parts of a plant. Essential oil is obtained from various herbs and plants, such as orange, eucalyptus, corn mint, peppermint, citronella, lemon, lime clover leaf, and spearmint, using distillation methods such as steam and water distillation. An essential oil contains volatile aroma compounds and real essence of the plant from which it is derived. Essential oils are primarily used in cosmetics & toiletries, food items and beverages. Rising consumer income across developing nations coupled with high demand for premium cuisine is expected to contribute to the segment growth. Orange, lemon, spearmint, anise, asafetida, basil, citronella, coriander, rosemary, and others are increasingly being used to extract oils and improve flavor in food & beverages instead of adding whole herbs and spices. Rising demand for attractive color and taste in local dishes is further fueling to market growth. On the basis of application, the essential oils market is led by the food & beverage application segment. Highly nutritive contents and numerous health benefits associated with the consumption of essential oils are the key factors driving the use of essential oils in food & beverage industry during the forecast period. Furthermore, an increase in demand for energy and health drinks is witnessed in the recent years, which have led to increased use of essential oils in beverages. Also, the number of recreational and lifestyle users has constantly increased in the recent years, which will increase the demand for essential oils in spa & relaxation and aromatherapy industries. The major factor boosting the market growth is the increasing consumer preference for natural and organic products be it cosmetics, food or similar other product categories. This in turn, has led the manufacturers operating in such industries to develop products that contain natural additives. Thus, the growing usage of essential oils among the aforementioned industries, coupled with factors which include increasing disposable income and improved standards of living in emerging economies, supplement the market growth. The factors restricting the market growth are high price of essential oils, availability of synthetic substitutes, and limited availability of raw materials. Government support and favorable regulations are likely to offer lucrative opportunities for market growth. Essential oils are volatile liquid substances extracted from aromatic plant material by different types of extraction methods. They have potent antioxidant and anti-microbial properties and can be used to treat depression and stress-related diseases. Different types of essential oils used in aromatherapy include tea tree oil, jasmine oil, rosemary oil, and lavender oil. These oils are used in massage therapies, acupuncture, and topical care. Changing lifestyles and their consequences, such as high stress and depression, along with increasing disposable incomes, result in an increase in demand for aromatherapy. The global essential oil market is observing a significant expansion in its size, thanks to the increasing usage of essential oil in aromatherapy. The augmenting demand for flavored food and beverages products among consumers is also boosting this market substantially. Bioplastic Carry Bags and Garbage Bags

BioPlastic shopping bags, carrier bags, or plastic grocery bags are a type of bioplastic bag used as shopping bags and made from various kinds of bioplastic. Reuse for storage or trash is common, and modern plastic shopping bags are increasingly recyclable or biodegradable. There are many benefits of bioplastics: by making use of biomass (corn starch, among others) we save on fossil fuels, reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to the realization of a circular economy. Bioplastics are used in the packaging, food services, agriculture and horticulture, medicine, consumer electronics and the automotive industries The advantages of bioplastics can prevent plastic pollution from becoming worse, and other methods can be used to help clean up any of this pollution that is already present. Waste to energy programs, and other alternative uses for traditional plastics that are cluttering up landfills and other areas, can eliminate the plastic garbage buildup that harms the earth and environment. The Indian plastics market is comprised of around 25,000 companies and employs 3 million people. The domestic capacity for polymer production was 5.72m tonnes in 2009. The State of Gujurat in Western India is the leading plastics processing hub and accounts for the largest number of plastics manufacturers, with over 5,000 plastics firms. The growth rate of the Indian plastics industry is one of the highest in the world, with plastics consumption growing at 16% per annum (compared to 10% p.a. in China and around 2.5% p.a. in the UK). Bioplastic Garbage Bag A garbage bag is a material utilized for the collection, storage, disposal, and handling of garbage. In addition, disposable bags find vast applications among transportation and distribution of garbage. These bags are produced by different materials such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polythene (HDPE), recycled polythene, liner blend polythene, woven polypropylene, biodegradable polythene, and co-extruded plastic bags. In addition, these bags effectively reduce dependency on oil, thereby providing domestic solution to plastic film manufacturers. They are designed as per FDA and USDA specifications, and are therefore hygienic, leak proof, lightweight, durable, portable, offer resistance to air & water, meet, and can be recycled. Therefore, disposable garbage bags wide are widely used in households, colleges, offices, shops, restaurants, hospitals, and industries. Compostable trash bags are a great way to transport compostable and food waste to the compost facility. Many companies now offer so called biodegradable trash bags that are actually not biodegradable. There is recent university research that evaluated the various additives added to the plastic to supposedly make so-called biodegradable garbage bags compostable. As it turns out, the additives are ineffective. What happens is the bags break down into tinier pieces that are then ingested by fish. Increase in disposable income and rise in purchasing power of consumers have fueled the demand for convenient and cost-effective garbage bags for collecting waste, which fuel the market growth. Moreover, rise in demand for premium garbage bags owing to their stretchable strength and odor control properties propels the market growth. However, implementation of stringent regulations and taxation over the use of plastic bags to mitigate the harmful effects on the environment are expected to restrain the market growth. Bioplastic Film

Plastic materials have made entry in every sphere of human life because of its superior characteristics such as durability, strengths, shape and moldable property, since these plastics have high molecular weight & tightly bonded together these are non-degradable, rendering their disposal difficult, which inversely leads to negative impact on the environment. Thus the concept of biodegradable plastic came as a solution which could be produced and degraded by microorganism in the environment when proper condition such as sunlight, moisture, oxygen etc. are available. Biodegradable plastics are the type of plastics that undergo decomposition over a period of time under composting conditions. The global biodegradable plastics market accounts for less than 1% of the overall plastics market, however, it is expected to grow at a fast pace over the next 5 years. The market growth is driven by continuous R&D activities, increased environmental awareness, and implementation of stringent environmental regulations. Bio based biodegradable plastics find their application in a variety of sectors, including fibres, medical, packaging, and agriculture. The demand for bio based biodegradable plastics is massive in the packaging sector, and it is anticipated that status quo will be maintained in the next five years as well. Other prominent sectors which will create robust demand for bio based biodegradable market include agriculture and medical. Biodegradable plastics have found their end-use in a variety of commercial applications. It is estimated that packaging and disposable house wares drive the biodegradable market. Foam packaging continues to represent significant market share for biodegradable plastics. Compostable bags, as well as single-use carrier plastic bags, follow foam packaging in terms of volume. Another developing use for biodegradable plastics is in the shale gas industry, where they are used during hydrofracking as more environmentally friendly proppants to “prop open” fractures in rock layers so oil and gas can be released.
