Best Business Opportunities in Nepal - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

Nepal encourages foreign investment both as joint venture operations with Nepalese investors or as 100 per cent foreign-owned enterprises. The few sectors that are not open to foreign investment are either reserved for national entrepreneurs in order to promote small local enterprises and protect indigenous skills and expertise or are restricted for national security reasons. Nepal is close to India and China which will have the largest surge in the middle class population in the history of the world. As families become smaller and wealthier, they will start eating well. Meat consumption will rise. It will take more agricultural resources to produce more meat. Buying shares in tourism-related stocks such as hotels, airlines or restaurants is a passive way to tap this potential. You can also open a resort or travel agency in anticipation of the boom. Nepal's exports of mainly carpets, clothing, hemp, leather goods, jute goods and grain

For the past few decades, the major investment opportunities have emerged sure to give us a proper financial result (i.e, collection of the investment and generation of profit from the invested capital) are Hydro-electricity generation, Tourism and Agriculture. Even though there are other sectors and opportunities to invest time, capital and labour in, these three are the most effective and productive in the long run.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture employs 76% of the workforce, services 18% and manufacturing and craft-based industry 6%. Agricultural produce – mostly grown in the Terai region bordering India – includes tea, rice, corn, wheat, sugarcane, root crops, milk, and water buffalo meat. Industry mainly involves the processing of agricultural produce, including jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain. In trying to increase agricultural production and diversify the agricultural base, the government focused on irrigation, the use of fertilizers and insecticides, the introduction of new implements and new seeds of high-yield varieties, and the provision of credit. Although new agricultural technologies helped increase food production, there still was room for further growth. Past experience indicated bottlenecks, however, in using modern technology to achieve a healthy growth.

Government efforts to boost the agricultural economy have focused on easing dependence on weather conditions, increasing productivity, and diversifying the range of crops for local consumption, export, and industrial inputs. Solutions have included the deployment of irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and improved seed varieties, together with credit provision, technical advice, and limited mechanization.

Agriculture provides agricultural raw materials to the industries and industries produce manufactured or finished products from those raw materials. Thus, we have seen that without agricultural raw materials, agro-based industries cannot run. The development of agro-based industries depends upon the availability of agricultural raw materials.

Hydropower Sector

The perennial nature of rivers and the steep gradient of the country's topography provide ideal conditions for the development of hydropower. Most of the power plants are run-of-river type with energy available in excess of the in-country demand during the monsoon season and deficit during the dry season. Nepal has a huge hydropower potential. Nepal's electricity generation is dominated by hydropower, though in the entire scenario of energy use of the country, the electricity is a tiny fraction, only 1% energy need is fulfilled by electricity. The bulk of the energy need is dominated by fuel wood (68%), agricultural waste (15%), animal dung (8%) and imported fossil fuel (8%). The other fact is that only about 40% of Nepal's population has access to electricity. With this scenario and having immense potential of hydropower development, it is important for Nepal to increase its energy dependency on electricity with hydropower development.

Much of the new hydropower capacity in Nepal will be built with a view to export electricity to meet growing demand for electricity in northern India, offsetting greenhouse-gas emissions by reducing the proportion of coal-burning stations in the electricity portfolio.

Mine and Mineral Industry

Minerals are the nonrenewable natural resources. Sustainable development of such resources helps to strengthen the national economy. Nepal is an underdeveloped country with vast natural resources such as water, minerals, forest, varieties of agricultural products and medical herbs. For the economic development of the country exploitation and proper use of such valuable resources, especially mineral resources, is extremely important. Small scale historical iron, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel mines and placer gold panning in the major rivers and many slate, quartzite, dolomite and limestone quarries were operational in many districts. Old working pits, audits, smelting places, scattered slag and remnant of mine materials stand as solid proofs of such mining activities in the past.

Limestone is by far the most important mineral resource in Nepal, followed by magnesite, lead and zinc, and marble. Limestone was mined for the production of cement and lime, as well as for construction materials. The mining sector, comprising numerous small-scale industrial minerals mining companies, was the smallest sector of Nepal’s economy.

All these indicate that Nepal is potential for metallic minerals but most of them are sub-economic to none economic prospect/ deposits.

Trends in Indian noodle market • Traditional flavors still dominate: Masala, chicken and tomato are most popular flavors in the market • Addressing rural market: Noodles are primarily consumed in urban India and to expand this market companies have introduced small sized and low cost products to address the demand of rural market. The success of this effort is still to be seen. • Huge Rural market: rural India where close to 60% of Indian population resides is a huge consumption market virtually un-penetrated by any player. Low cost products with appropriate marketing can open up this huge market. Some of the major reasons for its popularity are: • Increasing population of the country. • Rapid industrialization in the country. • Increasing purchasing capacity of the people. • The durability of the product. • The changing eating habit of the population. • Increasing preference for ready to eat food because of the increasing numbers of working couples etc. Vermicelli: Five main features of vermicelli make it a highly demanded product in the market: • Ready to eat • Easy to prepare • Nutritious • Tasty and • Low Cost It is one of the most preferred ready to cook item in both Indian and foreign markets. Proper and adequate placement of product and thrust on publicity at the point of sales would also be crucial. Pasta Product Market: The global market for pasta can be classified into spaghetti, macaroni, and noodles. It can also be bifurcated into fresh and dried pasta. While the former is prepared from simple dough of eggs and flour, the latter is made from finely ground semolina flour and water, sans egg mostly. Fresh pasta has a comparatively shorter shelf life than dried pasta and hence it is more expensive. Dried pasta generates accounts for a dominant share vis-à-vis sales in the global market for pasta. The overall global pasta market is expected to grow moderately in the upcoming years. Global Pasta Market is projected to witness at the CAGR of 5.85% and it is projected to reach USD 32.78 Billion during the period of 2017 to 2023. The global pasta market is being driven by a number of favorable factors. The changing preferences of the consumers, resulting from the western influences and urbanization in the developing regions, have contributed to the market growth. Further, as a result of hectic lifestyle, the consumers prefer easy-to-make food products. Since, pasta is a healthy carbohydrate-rich food and convenient to prepare, the demand for different types of pasta products such as fusilli, macaroni and vermicelli, has been on a surge. Moreover, manufacturers are introducing product innovations such as gluten-free pasta, organic pasta and vegan pasta to attract a larger consumer-base. Geography-wise, the global market for pasta has been segmented into Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, and the Rest of the World. Among them, Europe accounts for maximum percentage share in terms of consumption and North America comes next. Markets in China and India, emerging economies whose growth rate has surpassed that of all other countries in the world, have proved to be tough ones to crack. Per capita sales of pasta is low in India and China on account of lesser priced regional staples such as rice and noodles. Besides the lack of affordability and cultural preferences, the abundant availability of pasta is another factor hobbling the growth of the Asian markets. Going forward, however, tables might likely turn due to rising per capita income in emerging economies, particularly India and China. This, coupled with rising urbanization, is anticipated to push substantial growth in the near future. The spaghetti segment is projected to register the higher growth rate (5.77%) during the forecast period of 2017 to 2023. Change in consumer lifestyle, increasing disposable income, increase in health awareness, and rise in demand for convenience food and consumption will a positive impact on the market during the forecast period. Packaged foods are convenient to carry, store, and use. Thus, all these factors together will drive the market. The primary factors catalyzing the growth of the pasta market in India include rising urbanization, changing lifestyles and surging demand for ready-to-eat products. In addition to this, the market is also influenced by an increasing women employment rate coupled with rising disposable incomes. Further, the health-conscious consumers are demanding food products with healthier ingredients, which has led to a rise in the demand for pasta made with whole-wheat and quinoa. Some of the other forces that have been proactive in maintaining the market growth are longer shelf-life and ease of preparation. Looking forward, the market value is projected to reach US$ 709.1 Million by 2023, registering a CAGR of 16.2% during 2018-2023. Glass Blocks

Glass blocks or bricks are architectural products that allow light to pass through, while also providing a level of privacy or obscuration. Glass blocks are typically square in shape and can have a variety of surface treatments that affect their transparency. Glass blocks are often assembled like bricks with a grout or sealant. Some blocks come with assembly systems that provide wall anchors and vertical and horizontal spacers to precisely align the blocks. The blocks are spaced accurately and consistently using the spacers and then bonded together with silicone. The joints are finished with tile grout or mortar. Glass blocks used in prisons and detention centers, police departments, and other high-risk locations are often set in steel frames for added strength and security. Glass blocks market forecast predicts that this market will grow at a CAGR of more than 7% by 2022.
