Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector: Project Opportunities in Goa

PROFILE:

The 'fisheries and aquaculture sector' is recognized as the sunshine sector in Indian agriculture. It stimulates growth of number of subsidiary industries and is the source of livelihood for a large section of economically backward population, especially fishermen, of the country. Fish production in India has increased more than tenfold since its independence in 1947. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, fish output in India doubled between 1990 and 2010. India has 8118 Km of marine coastline, 3827 fishing villages, and 1914 traditional fish landing centres. India's fresh water resources consists of 195,210 Km of rivers and canals, 2.9 million hectares of minor and major reservoirs, 2.4 million hectares of ponds and lakes, and about 0.8 million hectares of flood plain wetlands and water bodies. As of 2010, the marine and freshwater resources offered a combined sustainable catch fishing potential of over 4 million metric tonnes of fish.

RESOURCES:

Fishing is another traditional and important economic activity of the State. Goa, being located on the west coast of India, has a coastline extending over 100 Km and inland waterways of another 250 Km, rich in marine wealth. Prawns, the valuable foreign exchange earner, mackerels, sardines, etc. are available in plenty in Goa coast. Fish is a protein rich food. It forms a chief component in the diet of about 90% of the population of Goa. Capture fisheries of Goa (India) constitute a highly productive sector. They remain one of the major sources of valuable food and employment and a net contributor in the foreign exchange earnings. As a result of this dramatic increase some marine fish stocks have started showing the sign of over-exploitation. Many small scale units based on fisheries resources like salt curing of mackerels, fish meat, fish oils, dehydration of fishes etc. are being set up under the State. The fishing activity has also given a big boost to canning, freezing and other fish processing units in the State. A couple of fish oil extraction as well as fish meal manufacturing units can also be set up in the State by utilising the rich fisheries resources.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

The Indian government announced NDSP as part of the economic reforms programme. The policy involved three schemes - leasing out of foreign fishing vessels to operate in the Indian EEZ, engaging foreign fishing vessels for test fishing and forming joint ventures between foreign companies and Indian companies on 49:51 equity basis in deep sea fishing, processing and marketing. Government of India started giving licenses to joint venture, lease and test fishing vessels.

Waste Management and Recycling: Project Opportunities in Goa

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

Goa produces around 300 tonnes of garbage, but with municipal bodies. The proliferation of plastic wastes in the urban and village environments of Goa, and the abysmally hopeless and inadequate arrangements of municipalities and authorities for the disposal of this plastic litter, are subjects which many environment NGOs and citizens have expressed anguish over right from the inception of the Goa Environment Federation (GEF). Goa receives around 2 million of domestic and international tourists per year. A tourist produces an average of 1kg of waste a day. If we calculate the waste therefore, generated by the tourism industry in Goa the figures are shocking and huge. This waste is leading to a loss of biodiversity which is linked to human activities and loss of landscape attractiveness affect a number of tourist destinations. Though a few civic bodies, including CCP, have initiated solid waste management programmes, the problem is also in coping with the huge outflow of non-biodegradable waste from tourism industry, shops and establishments and plastic-oriented packaging in a consumerist society. Around 2,000 composting units to treat wet waste have been set up at various levels, including individuals and housing colonies.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Cellulose Acetate - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue,Plant Layout

Cellulose acetate is one of the oldest manmade macromolecules used extensively in the textile and polymer industries. It has an inherent advantage in that the starting material, cellulose, is a renewable natural resource. The current applications of cellulose acetate include textiles, cigarette tow, lacquers, cellulose films, and packaging. Since it is nontoxic, cellulose acetate is widely used in food packaging. Cellulose acetate has been produced from both cotton and wood pulp. Cellulose acetate is a semi-synthetic polymer obtained through the esterification of acetic acid with cellulose that is a natural polymer. Cellulose acetates with different properties are obtained depending on the esterification degree (degree of substitution). Cellulose triacetate (fiber triacetate) finds its predominant application in the Production of high- quality cine film as it exhibits an excellent dimensional stability combined with very low flammability, in contrast with films from cellulose nitrate. Cellulose acetate finds its use as a plastic material, must be mentioned, especially mixed esters containing butyrate. Besides the acetate groups (cellulose acetobutyrate) can be melt processed, especially by injection molding to produce consumer’s goods with attractive mechanical properties and attractive appearance; but also in this field cellulose acetate stands in hard competition with synthetic plastics. Textile applications accounted for nearly 8% of world consumption of cellulose acetate fibers in 2011; demand growth during 2011–2016 is forecast at an average annual rate of approximately 1.2%. Any entrepreneurs venture into this field will be successful.

Water Treatment Chemicals (R.O., Boiler and Cooling Tower) - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Plant Layout

Water treatment describes industrial-scale processes that make water more acceptable for an end-use, which may be drinking, industrial, or medical. Water treatment is unlike small-scale water sterilization that campers and other people in wilderness areas practice. Water treatment should remove existing water contaminants or so reduce their concentration that their water becomes fit for its desired end-use, which may be safely returning used water to the environment. Two of the main processes of industrial water treatment are boiler water treatment and cooling water treatment. A lack of proper water treatment can lead to the reaction of solids and bacteria within pipe work and boiler housing. Steam boilers can suffer from scale or corrosion when left untreated leading to weak and dangerous machinery, scale deposits can mean additional fuel is required to heat the same level of water because of the drop in efficiency. Poor quality dirty water can become a breeding ground for bacteria such as Legionella causing a risk to public health. The Indian boiler water treatment chemicals market so far has been fragmented but in recent times it showed sign of consolidation, as about 70% of the market share is being accounted by top 6 players. The Indian boiler water treatment chemicals market will grow at the CAGR of 8.2% till 2018, in terms of revenues. The report also forebodes that Nalco- India is going to maintain its lead till 2018 with over 25% market share. The next major segment in India would be the water chemicals segment with potential for a range of chemicals for conserving this critical resource. The demand for water is likely to grow substantially, putting pressure on supply of water for irrigation, drinking and industrial usage. The need to augment supply of water requires both conservation efforts to minimize wastage as well as greater amount of recycling. This is where water chemicals will play a vital role. Thus, it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest due to growing demand.

Power Transformer

Power Transformers are used in Distribution Network so directly connected to the consumer so load fluctuations are very high. these are not loaded fully at all time so iron losses takes place 24hr a day and cu losses takes place based on load cycle. The specific weight is more i.e. (iron weight)/ (cu weight). Average loads are about only 75% of full load and these are designed in such a way that max efficiency occurs at 75% of full load. As these are time dependent the all day efficiency is defined in order to calculate the efficiency. Power Transformers are used in Transmission network so they do not directly connect to the consumers, so load fluctuations are very less. These are loaded fully during 24 hr’s a day, so Cu losses & Fe losses takes place throughout day the specific weight i.e. (iron weight)/(cu weight) is very less .the average loads are nearer to full loaded or full load and these are designed in such a way that maximum efficiency at full load condition. These are independent of time so in calculating the efficiency only power basis is enough. Electric equipment industry contributes over 2% of GDP which is projected to increase to about 12% in 2015 according to a study by Frost & Sullivan. During the period, consumption of electrical equipment is estimated to increase from over USD 28 bn now to USD 363 bn, growing at a CAGR of about 30%. It is also expected that during 2010-2015, the Indian equipment manufacturing will grow at 5.5 times the growth rate of global electronic equipment production. The growth of the industry is directly related to the development of power generation and distribution. Plastic (P.V.C.) Laminated Collapsible Tubes - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities

The plastic collapsible tube is a product of daily use because every paste, like thing is packed in this tube. According to an estimate, the population of India is more than 100 crores and there are number of persons who might be using collapsible tubes in one way or the other. Once the tube has been used, it is discarded and cannot be used again; hence it is a consumable item. Plastic collapsible tubes can be beautifully printed in multi-colors which have better eye appeal. These plastic collapsible tubes are being widely used for packaging of adhesives, art colors, creams, lubricants etc. They are suitable for packaging of lotion cosmetics, tooth-pastes, shaving creams, hair cream; face cream, auto cleaners, polishes etc. There are various methods by which polythene collapsible tubes can be manufactured. One is by extruding in the form of a continuous hose like tubing which is then cut to the desired length. In another process injection mouled heads are then jointed to the tubes. Another conventional method practiced for production of collapsible tubes in Blow Molding Technique. The packaging industry is estimated at Rs 150 bn and is growing at 14-15% annually. This growth, according to industry watchers, is expected to double in the next two years. It is estimated that more than 80% of packaging in India constitutes rigid packaging, the rest being flexible. Flexible packaging includes paper, plastics (PVC, LDPE, HDPE, BOPP, polyester and poly-propylene), cloth and metal foils, especially of aluminium, besides jute and HDPE bags for bulk handling. The potential for packaging industry can be seen in the present low per capita consumption of two base materials, packaging paper and plastics. The overall growth rate of the industry has tapered off from 40% in early 1990s to around 9%. The flexible packaging industry is expected to grow at about 10-15% per annum in the coming years. Thus, it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest. Few Indian Major Players are as under:- A P T Packaging Ltd. Aravali (India) Ltd. Arcee Industries Ltd. Ashish Chemo-Plast Equipments Ltd. Zinc Sulphate (Agriculture Grade) - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Plant Layout

Zinc sulfate is a powder that is colorless and completely water-soluble. The product can be used in different applications, including some connected with maintaining good health. A number of over the counter products contain some level of zinc sulfate, as well as many prescription medications. In terms of healthcare uses, zinc sulfate is often included as an ingredient in products designed to treat skin conditions. In particular, over-the-counter medications for acne are likely to contain the compound. Lotions and topical creams that are used to treat boils are also likely to contain at least trace amounts of the sulfate. Zinc Sulphate is used in agriculture as a weed killer and to give protection against pests. It is used to supply zinc in animal feeds and fertilizers; Zinc Sulphate is also an important constituent of the precipitating bath in the manufacture of viscose rayon and in electrolyte for zinc plating. Zinc Sulphate functions as a mordant in dyeing; as a preservative for skins and leather; and as an astringent and emetic in medicine. Zinc sulfate is chiefly used in fertilizer applications and animal feed supplements. It is especially applied on crops such as pecan, deciduous fruits, peanuts, cotton, corn, and citrus, and added to feeds for swine and poultry. Zinc will play a larger role in the fertilizer market as demand grows for its use as a micronutrient in growing agricultural crops. Zinc is necessary for energy production, protein synthesis and growth regulation within plants, and can limit plant growth if it is not available in sufficient quantities during key stages of plant development. Demand is already growing in some regions. In 2012 and 2013, for example, China included zinc fertilizer in the national fertilizer recommendations for major crop production. Overall, the move is expected to increase zinc fertilizer production and use in China by an additional 50,000 metric tons to 100,000 metric tons annually. Global zinc chemical production will soon be reaching very high utilization rates. New capacity for zinc chemicals is expected to come online during the next five years, most likely in Asia and in China. So any new entrants can venture in to this industry.
