A silica manufacturing business from rice husk ash runs on one idea: burn rice husk under controlled heat, strip the metals and carbon out of the ash, dissolve the silica in caustic soda, precipitate it with acid or carbon dioxide, then wash, dry and mill it into a white filler powder for rubber makers. Husk is cheap. The plant that converts it is not. NPCS project reports for this product price plants of 1,200 to 1,740 tonnes of silica a year at ₹9 crore to ₹13.27 crore, far above the small-unit figures quoted on some websites.
Two decisions come before any machinery order: the grade you will sell, and whether you can secure roughly 7,000 to 12,000 tonnes of husk a year close to the site.
Which grade of silica will you make, and who buys it?
Rice husk ash gives amorphous precipitated silica, not fumed silica or silica gel. Rubber takes most of it. Notch's estimate, reported by European Rubber Journal, puts world precipitated silica demand at 3.1 million tonnes in 2023, with tyres at 37% and non-tyre rubber goods at 28%.
BIS withdrew its rubber-grade standard, IS 12076:1986, and its page lists no replacement. In practice each buyer sets its own specification.
| Segment | What the buyer checks | Fit for a new plant |
|---|---|---|
| Non-tyre rubber (footwear, belts, rollers) | Price, colour, ease of mixing | Start here |
| Tyres | Dispersion, lot-to-lot consistency, impurities | Later, after repeated sample trials |
Start with non-tyre rubber unless a tyre maker has agreed to test your sample. The grade sets how hard you must leach and wash, and that sets plant cost. These buyers are the compounders a rubber processing business deals with.
What does a rice husk ash silica plant cost?
Two NPCS project reports, written for different capacities, land at almost the same capital per tonne. The last row is our arithmetic.
| Item | NPCS report 1 | NPCS report 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Silica capacity (tonnes a year) | 1,740 | 1,200 |
| By-products (tonnes a year) | Activated carbon 192, sodium carbonate 288 | Activated carbon 132, sodium carbonate 98 |
| Plant and machinery | ₹7.46 crore | ₹5 crore |
| Project cost | ₹13.27 crore | ₹9 crore |
| Return / break-even point | 23% / 46% | 19% / 52% |
| Project cost per tonne of annual capacity | ₹0.76 lakh | ₹0.75 lakh |
Treat the per-tonne row as a planning rule, not a quote: about ₹0.75 lakh per tonne of annual capacity, with machinery a little over half of project cost in both. At 300 working days these plants make 4 to 6 tonnes a day. Replace the rule with supplier quotations before you borrow.
What moves profit most:
- Husk price. Husk is also boiler fuel, so a rate locked for three years beats today's rate.
- Chemicals per tonne. Caustic soda and acid use depend on how much silica your ash gives up.
- By-products. Both reports count them. Count them only once buyers are named; activated carbon manufacturing needs its own activation step.
How do you make silica from rice husk ash?
Six stages; the first two decide whether the rest works.
- Burn the husk near 600°C, never above 700°C. A 2018 study in the journal Materials found husk burned at 600°C stayed amorphous, at 89.6% silica. Quartz appeared at 700°C and cristobalite at 900°C, forms that dissolve poorly in caustic soda.
- Leach out the metals. Potassium, the main contaminant, measured 2.53% in untreated ash; washing the husk in 1 N hydrochloric acid cut it to 0.06% and kept the silica amorphous at higher temperatures. The NPCS 1,200-tonne report burns first and leaches second; test the reverse on a bench.
- Dissolve the silica in sodium hydroxide. The cleaned ash gives sodium silicate solution. The carbon-rich solid left behind is the starting point for the activated carbon by-product.
- Precipitate the silica. Add acid, or bubble carbon dioxide through the solution; that route leaves the sodium carbonate by-product. Dosing rate and pH set particle size, so this stage fixes the grade.
- Filter and wash until the salts are gone. Sodium-laden wash water is where effluent cost starts.
- Dry, mill to the buyer's particle size and pack.
Which machines does a rice husk silica plant need?
The furnace is the easy part; the stages after it decide purity and particle size.
| Stage | Machine | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Burning | Rotary kiln or muffle-type furnace | Even temperature across the whole bed |
| Leaching | Acid-resistant tanks with agitators | Lining life |
| Extraction | Jacketed reactor with agitator and steam | Resistance to hot caustic soda |
| Precipitation | Stirred tank with pH control | Dosing accuracy |
| Separation | Filter press or centrifuge | How fully the cake washes |
| Drying and milling | Spray or flash dryer, pulveriser, classifier | Fuel use, particle-size control |
| Utilities | Boiler, power backup, effluent plant | Capacity for sodium-salt wash water |
How much rice husk does the plant need, and where will it come from?
Husk is about 20% of paddy by weight, husk leaves 16.5% to 17.5% ash (a TIFAC survey and a 2023 IJERT laboratory study), and ash holds 85% to 95% silica. One tonne of husk therefore holds at most 0.14 to 0.17 tonne of silica. Real extraction recovers less, so read these as minimums.
| Plant (silica a year) | Husk (tonnes a year) | Husk a day, 300 days | Paddy milled (tonnes a year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200 tonnes | 7,200-8,600 | 24-29 tonnes | 36,000-43,000 |
| 1,740 tonnes | 10,500-12,400 | 35-41 tonnes | 52,000-62,000 |
Rice is plentiful: the Third Advance Estimates put output at 154.024 million tonnes for 2025-26. Collection is the constraint, since husk also feeds boilers and biomass briquette makers.
Contract husk from several mills before ordering machinery, and burn it yourself where possible: ash from a boiler above 700°C may already hold crystalline silica, so test bought ash first. See also rice husk products manufacturing.
Which approvals does a rice husk silica plant need?
- Udyam and GST registration for the unit.
- Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate from your State Pollution Control Board, which sets the category and effluent conditions for your exact process. Ask in writing before buying land.
- Factory licence from the state, with boiler registration if you raise steam.
- Fire safety certificate and safe storage for caustic soda and acids.
- Importer-Exporter Code from DGFT only if you export.
Can a new plant compete with existing rice husk silica makers?
In a regional niche, yes; in tyre grade on day one, unlikely. Brisil Technologies, profiled by Marico Innovation Foundation, reported making 25 to 30 tonnes of silica a day in early 2023. The NPCS plants above make 4 to 6 tonnes a day. Sell first to footwear and rubber-goods buyers near the plant, where steady quality wins repeat orders, and treat husk price as the main risk: if a boiler buyer outbids you, margin goes first.
What should you do before you approach a bank?
- Test husk and ash from three rice mills for silica, carbon, potassium and crystalline content.
- Run a bench trial: silica recovered per tonne of ash, and caustic soda and acid used per tonne of silica.
- Send samples to two compounders and ask for their specification.
- Ask the State Pollution Control Board which category and effluent norms apply.
- Get machinery quotations from two suppliers and replace the ₹0.75 lakh rule of thumb.

An NPCS project report on this product covers the process, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw material costs, manpower, project cost, working capital, profitability, break-even and a multi-year cash flow, in the layout banks usually ask for. NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994 across more than 40 sectors.
Frequently asked questions
How much silica is in rice husk ash?
Usually 85% to 95% by weight from controlled burning. The Materials study measured 89.6% in unleached ash burned at 600°C and about 96% after leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. Most of the rest is carbon, potassium and calcium, which is why the leaching step matters.
What is the price of rice husk ash silica per kg?
There is no single price. It depends on grade, particle size and whether the buyer is a tyre maker or a footwear unit, and quoted rates also differ by order size and payment terms. Ask two or three rubber compounders for written rates on your own sample.
Where can I buy rice husk ash?
Rice mills with husk-fired boilers and biomass power plants are the usual sources of ash. Test a sample for silica, carbon and crystalline content before signing.
Does a silica plant count as an MSME?
Yes. Under the limits announced in Budget 2025 (Ministry of MSME, 1 February 2025), a small enterprise can have investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore; micro stops at ₹2.5 crore. Investment in plant and machinery is what counts, so the NPCS reports' ₹5 crore to ₹7.46 crore of machinery falls in the small band.
