A bio-coal briquettes manufacturing business turns husk, stalk or sawdust into dense fuel blocks that a factory boiler burns in place of coal. Before you price a machine, settle two things: a boiler owner who will buy the briquettes, and a feedstock you can buy cheaply through the year.

The NPCS project reports for this product show the commitment. A plant making 16 tonnes a day needs ₹89 lakh in total capital, and one making 4,800 tonnes a year needs ₹129 lakh, of which only ₹23 lakh to ₹28 lakh is machinery. Profit is the gap between what you pay for feedstock and what the buyer pays for heat. That gap stood at ₹1,001 a tonne in April 2025 and ₹2,521 a tonne in April 2026, against a processing cost of about ₹1,200 a tonne. The same plant can lose money one year and do well the next.

Plain briquettes, torrefied bio-coal or pellets: which one should you make?

In Indian trade, bio-coal briquettes usually means agricultural or forest residue pressed into blocks without carbonisation. The name is also used for torrefied biomass, heated without air at roughly 250 to 300 °C until it turns brittle and water-resistant. The National Physical Laboratory describes a rice straw example whose calorific value rose from 3,640 to 4,500 kcal/kg. Torrefaction needs a reactor and a skilled operator, so start with plain briquettes unless a buyer has asked for the torrefied grade in writing.

Pick the product from the buyer, not from the machine.

ProductHow it is madeChoose it when
Plain briquettesCrush, dry, pressA boiler buyer is nearby and residue is cheap
Torrefied bio-coalHeated without airA buyer has specified it
PelletsFiner feed, pellet millYou can supply power plant volumes; see the biomass pellet plant guide

Power Line reported in November 2025 that the Ministry of Power's co-firing policy for coal plants covers biomass pellets, so that demand goes to pellet makers, not briquette makers. Charcoal briquettes made in kilns are another business, covered in the wood charcoal business guide.

What does a bio-coal briquettes plant cost?

Machinery is a fifth to a quarter of total capital in the two NPCS project reports, so a quote listing only the press understates the project.

NPCS project reportCapacityPlant and machineryTotal capital investmentRate of returnBreak-even
Bio Coal Briquettes from Agricultural Cellulosic Waste16 tonnes/day₹23 lakh₹89 lakh30%53%
Fuel Briquettes from Biomass (Bio Coal Briquettes from Agricultural Cellulosic Waste)4,800 tonnes/year₹28 lakh₹129 lakh46%38%

Break-even is the share of capacity at which the plant stops losing money. The two plants are of a similar order of size, yet total capital differs by ₹40 lakh and the return by 16 points. Machinery accounts for only ₹5 lakh of that capital gap; the rest sits in land, building, working capital and other set-up items.

NPCS has prepared project reports for manufacturing units since 1994. These are sample figures; a lending decision needs a report built on your own site, capacity and feedstock prices.

Is the bio-coal briquettes business profitable? What the margin did in 2025 and 2026

The margin per tonne more than doubled in a year, and in April 2025 it was too thin to cover processing cost.

BiofuelCircle, all-IndiaApril 2025April 2026
Average deal price (₹/kCal-kg)1.7011.983
Gross conversion margin (₹/tonne)1,0012,521
Processing cost benchmark (₹/tonne)about 1,200about 1,200

BiofuelCircle, a biomass trading platform, quotes briquettes per unit of heat in its monthly market reports, because buyers pay for calorific value and ash, not weight. Its May 2025 newsletter priced premium grade (heat value above 3,800, ash below 8%) at ₹1.95 against ₹1.592 for standard grade (below 3,400, ash above 12%). In April 2026 imported coal delivered about 300 km inland cost about ₹2.10 on this scale, against ₹1.98 for briquettes, but cheaper fuel does not mean buyers switch at once: only fuel-flexible boilers can.

The usual way plants fail is paying too much for feedstock in lean months while the selling price stays tied to the buyer's coal alternative.

How are bio-coal briquettes made, step by step?

  1. Crush the residue in a crusher or hammer mill so the pieces are of even size.
  2. Dry it to the moisture your press maker specifies. Wet feed jams the press and gives crumbly briquettes.
  3. Press it. A screw or piston press compacts the material into logs or blocks.
  4. Cool and cut. Briquettes leave the press hot and cool on a conveyor before cutting.
  5. Pack and store under cover. Briquettes take up moisture again and lose heat value.

Which machines, feedstock and site does a briquettes plant need?

Test the press on your own feedstock before you pay for it.

MachineWhat it doesWhat to check
Crusher or hammer millCuts residue to even sizeIt handles your hardest feedstock, such as cotton stalk
DryerLowers moistureWhether you can dry in monsoon months
Briquetting pressCompacts the feedA trial run on your material, with output and power use measured
Cooler, cutter and packing lineCools, sizes and bags the productBuyer's delivery format

NPCS describes the feedstock as agricultural and forest residues. BiofuelCircle's April 2025 report found cotton stalk and sugarcane trash abundant and cheap. Rice husk has other buyers, so read the rice husk products guide before counting on it. For the site, plan three-phase power, covered storage larger than the production shed, and a short haul to farms and buyers, since freight eats the margin.

Which registrations and pollution approvals does a briquettes unit need?

  • Udyam registration, which also opens the unit to MSME schemes.
  • GST registration. Have your chartered accountant confirm the classification and current rate for your briquettes before the first invoice.
  • Consent to establish and then to operate from the State Pollution Control Board.
  • Factory licence and fire safety clearance under your state's rules.

The Central Pollution Control Board's 2020 green category list included biomass briquettes made by sun drying without toxic hazardous waste. A dryer or a carbonisation step may change your category, so ask the state board which applies to your plan before you buy land.

Is there a subsidy for a briquettes plant?

Under its Biomass Programme, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) offers central financial assistance of ₹9 lakh for each tonne of hourly capacity, capped at ₹45 lakh a plant, for briquette and pellet plants with new machinery. The pellet rate was revised separately in July 2024. As of October 2026 the ministry's page still lists the scheme period as 2021-22 to 2025-26, though it carries updates as late as August 2026. Confirm with the ministry or your state renewable energy agency that applications are open before you build a finance plan around it.

What should you settle before ordering the press?

  1. Get a written intent from a boiler owner within trucking distance, naming the grade: heat value, ash and size.
  2. Price feedstock for every month, including the lean ones, and find out who else buys it.
  3. Ask two suppliers for a trial on your material, and ask what their quote excludes.
  4. Confirm your pollution category and whether the MNRE scheme is open.
  5. Work the margin from monthly prices, not a yearly average.

An NPCS project report for this product sets out the process, machinery with suppliers, raw material costs, manpower, project cost, working capital, profitability, break-even and a multi-year cash flow, in the format lenders ask for. Other fuel and power ideas sit under renewable energy manufacturing ideas.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of 1 kg of bio coal?

There is no single price, because buyers pay for heat value and ash, and each grade is priced separately. BiofuelCircle quoted an all-India average of ₹1.983 per kCal-kg in April 2026. Ask the buyer for the grade specification first, then compare offers on that basis instead of rupees per kilo.

What are the disadvantages of briquettes?

Margins swing with coal and feedstock prices, as the 2025 and 2026 figures above show. Only fuel-flexible boilers can switch to briquettes. Feedstock supply follows the harvest and monsoon cycle. High-ash feedstock is graded lower and sells for less.

What is the profit margin of biomass briquettes?

It is not a fixed percentage. In April 2026 the gross conversion margin of ₹2,521 a tonne left roughly ₹1,300 a tonne above the ₹1,200 processing cost benchmark. In April 2025 nothing was left above it. Your own figure depends on feedstock price, grade and plant utilisation.

When do you apply for the MNRE subsidy?

Before the plant is commissioned. MNRE takes applications on its BioURJA portal and requires new machinery. Under its guidelines a briquette or pellet plant must be commissioned within 12 months of in-principle approval. A performance inspection follows commissioning, so keep production records from day one.
