Start with the husk you can buy, not the product you want to sell. A rice husk products manufacturing business works when the plant sits within an easy haul of rice mills that sell their husk, and when the product has a buyer who already pays for boiler fuel, rubber filler or board. Briquettes are the usual first step for a small investor. Silica and particle board are bigger projects: NPCS project reports put them at ₹2.7 crore and ₹4.3 crore, so they suit someone with bank finance and a technical partner. Husk itself is not scarce: India produced 154.02 million tonnes of rice in 2025-26 (third advance estimate), and husk is roughly a fifth of paddy weight. What is scarce is clean, dry husk at your gate at a price that leaves a margin.
Which rice husk product should your manufacturing business start with?
Three routes cover most serious plans for a new rice husk products manufacturer. They differ in capital and husk quality.
| Route | Who buys it | Capital to expect | What the husk must be like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel briquettes | Boiler users replacing firewood or coal | Lowest of the three; the press and drying set-up drive it, so collect supplier quotations | Dry (below about 15% moisture) and free of stones and metal |
| Precipitated silica | Rubber, cosmetics, toothpaste and food makers | NPCS report: ₹273 lakh for 600 tonnes a year | Ash from a controlled burn, explained below |
| Particle board | Furniture, interior panels and wall partitions | NPCS report: ₹426 lakh for 15 lakh pieces a year | Dry and ground fine, then mixed with resin |
- Briquettes suit small capital, with two or three boiler users lined up first.
- Silica suits a promoter who can run a chemical plant and has a buyer who will test samples.
- Board suits someone with a furniture or panel maker committed to volumes, since it costs the most.

Where do you buy rice husk, and how far can you carry it?
Mills that make raw rice sell all their husk, while mills that parboil rice burn 40 to 45% of theirs in their own boilers, per the same TIFAC study. Site the plant near raw-rice mills first. At roughly 20% of paddy weight, the 154.02-million-tonne crop implies more than 30 million tonnes of husk a year, so the constraint is geography, not quantity.
Husk weighs about 110 kg per cubic metre, so a truck is full by volume long before it is full by weight. We found no published official price series, so get written quotes from three mills across a season.
How is husk processed, and which machines do the work?
- Weigh the husk and screen out stones and metal. A single nail can wreck a press die, FAO warns.
- Dry it and store it under cover. Presses work best below about 15% moisture.
- Then split by route:
- Briquettes: a heated screw press, with the die at 250 to 300 °C, softens the husk's own lignin so it binds without added binder. Cut, cool and pack.
- Silica: burn the husk under control, digest the ash in caustic soda, filter, pass carbon dioxide through the solution to precipitate silica, then wash and dry. This follows the process developed at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
- Board: grind the husk fine, mix it with resin, hot-press, then cut and finish, as the Uttar Pradesh MSME portal describes.
| Route | Main machines | What to check with the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Briquettes | Dryer, heated screw press, cutter, packing line | Die and screw material, because husk wears them fast |
| Silica | Furnace, digester, filters, precipitator, regenerator, dryer | Whether the caustic soda can be recovered and reused |
| Board | Dryer, grinder, resin mixer, hot press, cutting tools | Hot press size and a steady resin supply |
Screw presses draw about 150 kWh per tonne against 75 for piston presses (GERES) and need frequent screw rebuilds, while piston presses need new dies every few hundred hours on husk (FAO). See a machine that has run for months on husk before paying an advance.
Why does burn temperature decide whether husk ash sells as silica?
Silica buyers want amorphous silica, the non-crystalline form. In a materials study published by MDPI, untreated husk burned at 600 °C for two hours gave ash with 89.6% silica, all amorphous. Quartz appeared at 700 °C, and cristobalite and tridymite at 900 °C. So a hot-running boiler can produce less useful ash; washing husk with water or acid before burning kept silica amorphous at 900 °C for six hours.
For sizing, the Indian Institute of Science process needs about 1.6 tonnes of ash per tonne of silica. A 600-tonne plant therefore needs about 960 tonnes of ash a year, the ash from about 5,800 tonnes of husk at TIFAC's 16.5% ash content. Ask any mill how hot its furnace runs, and test a sample before you sign.
What do the silica and board routes cost, and what returns do the reports show?
Machinery is the smaller part of both bills: about 19% of the silica project cost and 36% of the board's. Figures are Project Stats from the two NPCS reports, in ₹ lakh as listed.
| Report | Capacity | Plant and machinery | Project cost | Return | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Precipitated Silica from Rice Husk Ash | 600 tonnes a year | 53 | 273 | 43% | 47% |
| Particle Board from Rice Husk | 15 lakh pieces a year | 152 | 426 | 31.69% | 51.30% |
Read return and break-even as report-level assumptions at that capacity, not forecasts for your plant.
What approvals and funding does a husk plant need?
State pollution control boards sort industries into red, orange, green and white categories by a pollution index, and the Central Pollution Control Board harmonised the system in February 2025, as the Maharashtra board's site lists. Ask your state board where your exact product and process fall before buying land; a briquette line and a silica plant can fall in different categories.
PMEGP, the margin-money subsidy scheme for new micro enterprises, was approved for 2021-22 to 2025-26, according to All India Radio. Confirm the current cycle and project-cost ceiling on the KVIC PMEGP portal. Silica and board plants at these costs need a term loan, and lenders want a project report, not a machine quotation. NPCS has consulted since 1994 and has prepared over 5,000 project reports across more than 40 sectors, in the format banks typically ask for.
What goes wrong in rice husk businesses?
| Problem | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Press parts wear fast | Husk is abrasive (FAO, TIFAC) | Specify alloy dies; budget spares |
| Briquettes crumble when damp | Lignin and most binders dissolve in water | Pack sealed, store dry |
| Buyer rejects the briquettes | High-ash briquettes are hard to ignite in household stoves and can fall through coal grates (FAO) | Trial a load at the buyer's boiler |
| Ash piles up | Husk is about 16.5% ash; GERES advises agreeing disposal up front | Put ash handling in the contract |
What should you do in the next 30 days?
- Visit three to five raw-rice mills within a short haul. Ask monthly husk volume, whether they sell it, and how wet the heap is.
- Take ash samples from their boilers to a lab for silica and carbon content. It tells you whether the ash is saleable.
- Get quotes from two press makers and see their machines running on husk.
- For silica or board, an NPCS project report covers the manufacturing process with flow sheet, machinery with suppliers, raw material sources and costs, and project cost, working capital, profitability and break-even. The bank still takes its own view.
Frequently asked questions
Is rice husk a waste?
No. It is a by-product that mills burn in their own boilers or sell. Mills that parboil rice use about 40 to 45% of their husk as fuel, and raw-rice mills sell all of it. Husk is waste only where no buyer is within hauling distance.
Where can I buy rice husk?
From rice mills, starting with those that make raw rice, since they sell all their husk. Visit mills near your planned site, agree volume and moisture in writing, and compare quotes across a full season, not just one week's price.
What is the price of rice husk ash?
There is no single price, and we found no published price series. It depends on silica content, carbon content and whether the silica is amorphous, and buyers usually pay against a lab report. Ask each seller for an analysis before comparing quotes.
What are the disadvantages of rice husk as a raw material?
It is bulky at about 110 kg per cubic metre, abrasive on press parts and roughly 16.5% ash by weight. Briquettes made from it can be hard to ignite in household stoves, so test the product on the buyer's actual equipment before agreeing volumes.
