Steel industry: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. The increasing demand for it was mainly generated by the development projects that have been going on along the world, especially the infrastructural works and real estate projects that has been on the boom around the developing countries. India’s economic growth is contingent upon the growth of the Indian steel industry. Consumption of steel is taken to be an indicator of economic development. While steel continues to have a stronghold in traditional sectors such as construction, housing and ground transportation, special steels are increasingly used in engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals and fertilisers. India occupies a central position on the global steel map, with the establishment of new state-of-the-art steel mills, acquisition of global scale capacities by players, continuous modernisation and up gradation of older plants, improving energy efficiency and backward integration into global raw material sources.

RESOURCES:

Karnataka is the 3rd largest producer of steel in India with a current production level of 10.70 Million Tons per annum. Both alloy and non-alloy steel are produced and the product range includes basic steels like pig iron and sponge iron, ingot, blooms, billets, slabs, finished products like long products CTD & TMT (bars & rods), wire rod, sections, bright bars, CR/HR coils. The export of steel from Karnataka is around 0.96 Million Tons.

It is one among 6 major steel producing states. Karnataka is the 2nd largest in the country in terms of iron ore reserves and largest exporter of iron ore in the country. Hence, it can share more than 40% of the steel demand in India which is estimated as 124 million tons by 2011-12 and 50% of the exports of finished steel products. Based on this estimate, Karnataka can host a manufacturing steel base for more than 100 million tons capacity per annum.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Waste management: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

As regards municipal waste on an average 40 to 50 % of the total municipal waste is generated in the sic municipal corporation of Karnataka & more than 70 % of municipal waste is generated by the residential & market areas. The domestic waste generated by households comprises mainly of organic, plastic & paper waste & small quantities of the waste. Plastic & glass are segregated at the household level or by rag pickers and sold. The remaining waste is disposed in community bins, discarded ointments and medicine. In addition about 1 to 2% of biomedical waste also gets mixed with municipal solid waste in the community bins.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Vocational Training Institute

Vocational training is used to prepare for a certain trade or craft. Decades ago, it used to refer solely to such fields are welding and automotive service, but today it can range from hand trades to retail to tourism management. Vocational training is education only in the type of trade a person wants to pursue, forgoing traditional academics. Vocational training can be described as a training that emphasizes knowledge and skills needed for a specific trade, craft or job function. Earlier, this training was confined to certain trades like welding, automotive services and carpentry but the horizon of vocational training has expanded with the evolution of time. Vocational Education or skill based education are same thing for which the demand has accelerated due to shortage of skilled labour in India. Vocational education aims to enhance skills of the students that help them to grow beyond basic education and learn some real life skills at the time of their learning period. At present, companies are starting to understand changing need of work in this competitive environment and aim at hiring specialists or skill based employees for better future. The market is witnessing the use of several advanced technologies for content creation and delivery methods, which in turn enables efficient collaboration among trainers and learners. With the high penetration of the Internet, students are availing various online training methods like mobile learning, gamification, and blended learning. Many training solution providers are also developing mobile applications that can be used for self-paced learning. Also, vendors are making use of simulations and online collaboration tools to deliver vocational skilling courses to students through e-learning platforms. Vocational training provides the trade specific skills that are imparted at different levels, such as- secondary level, senior secondary level and the higher education level (post school). The main objective of vocational training is to fill in the gap between the demand for skilled manpower and the actual number of skilled manpower in the country. The vocational training market in India has been rapidly growing in the past few years driven by the Government initiatives with respect to skill development and the increase in the public as well as private investments in education. Since the ushering in of liberalization, capacity in the education sector has largely been expanded in the higher education, resulting in marginally improved literacy levels, although the exercise has not made a significant impact on employability. If the current momentum continues, there will soon be a shift towards higher levels of education. A large part of the employable and willing population is likely to be engaged in skill-intensive areas Vocational training is by far the most pressing area. The biggest challenge for the for-profit vocational education and training sector is making Indian youth employable and productive.

Manufacturing of Superplasticizer (Liquid Form)

Superplasticizers, also known as high range water reducers, are chemical admixtures used where well-dispersed particle suspension is required. These polymers are used as dispersants to avoid particle segregation (gravel, coarse and fine sands), and to improve the flow characteristics (theology) of suspensions such as in concrete applications. Their addition to concrete or mortar allows the reduction of the water to cement ratio without negatively affecting the workability of the mixture, and enables the production of self-consolidating concrete and high performance concrete. This effect drastically improves the performance of the hardening fresh paste. Uses of super plasticizers allow the reduction of water to the extent up to 30% without reducing workability. The use of super plasticizers is practiced for production of flowing, self-compacting, self leveling and for the production of high strength and high performance concrete. The global superplasticizer market is expected to register a moderate CAGR during the forecast period (2018-2023). The increasing urbanization along with the growing population helps the global concrete superplasticizers market growth. The rising demand for the superplasticizer material in the construction field in order to increase the tensile strength of the concretes fuels the global market growth. The concrete superplasticizers market is flourishing due to the demand for new infrastructures. The global concrete superplasticizers market is a flourishing market with growing demand in the infrastructure. On the basis of product types, superplasticizers market may be segmented into sulfonated naphthalene-formaldehyde condensates (SNF), sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde condensates (SMF), polycarboxylate derivatives (PC) and modified lignosulfonates (MLS) which are available in powder or liquid forms. The product type to be used depends largely on the concrete mixture such as ready mix, high strength, precast, self-compacting, high performance and shotcrete. SNF, SMF and MLS together account for a large volume of the total superplasticizers consumed globally.

Cardanol Production from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)

Cardanol Production from Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). Cardanol Manufacturing Business. Profitable Cashew Nut Processing Industry Cardanol is a natural phenol obtained from anacardic acid, the main component of cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), a byproduct of cashew nut processing being an eco-friendly substitute for phenols. Cashew phenol popularly known as Cardanol or Card-Phenol manufactured from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). It is a monohydroxyl phenol having a long hydrocarbon chain (C15H27) in a metaposition. The name cardanol is used for the decarboxylases derivatives obtained by thermal decomposition of any of the naturally occurring anacardic acids. This includes more than one compound because the composition of the side chain varies in its degree of unsaturation. Tri-unsaturated cardanol, the major component (41%) is shown below. The remaining cardanol is 34% mono-unsaturated, 22% bi-unsaturated, and 2% saturated. Application: Cardanol finds use in the chemical industry in Oil and Alcohol soluble resins, laminating resins, rubber compounding and coatings, serving as an excellent raw material for the preparation of high grade insulating varnishes, paints, enamels. It is used in friction materials, and surfactants as pigment dispersants for water-based inks and to make phenalkamines, which are used as curing agents for the durable epoxy coatings used on concrete floors. Cardanol can substitute Phenol in up to 30% in phenolic resins used as plywood bonding resin and for the lamination industries. Cardanol derivatives are extensively used in laminating industry for reducing brittleness and improving the flexibility of laminates produced by the co-condensation of phenol, CNSL and formaldehyde, the resins improve resistance to heat, minimize age-hardening and improve bonding of the reinforcement materials like paper, cloth and glass fibre to the matrix. Cardanol is used as a dispersant and plasticizer. Cardanol is isolated from cashew nut shells by vacuum distillation. Utilization of CNSL in polymer chemistry has been well experimented and commercialized. Cardanol can be substituted for phenol by up to 30% in phenolic resins used as plywood binding resins and for the lamination industries for cost savings purposes. Cardanol is processed and extracted from CNSL with respective its fractional distillation at 200°C to 240°C with a pressure less than 5mm of mercury. Cardanol is renewable, cost effective and easily produced in many regions in India and Asian countries with the limited usage of diesel. These products extracted from Cardanol have many advantages over other substituted phenols. Therefore it is widely used in the manufacture of surface coatings, Insulating varnishes, oil and alcohol soluble resins, laminating resins, Rubber compounding, Azo dyes, etc. As the viscosity of Cardanol is very high (compared to diesel) in the present investigation. Market Outlook The major cashew production distribution in India is in the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra along the West Coast, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa along the East Coast and some in the states of West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and North Eastern States. The production and productivity of cashew is highest in the state of Maharashtra. Cashew generates employment in the processing and agrarian sector of India employing over 3 lakh persons with more than 95% of them being women. India’s total export for Cashew nuts kernel (in shell) to the world in 2017 were US$ 16.3 million while import were US$ 1453.1 million. Major countries to which India is exporting were Vietnam (US$ 15 million) and Côte d’Ivoire (US$ 1 million) while importing from Côte d’Ivoire (US$ 301 million), Tanzania (US$ 301 million) and Guinea-Bissau (US$ 254 million). Cashew Nut Shell Liquid/Cardanol India’s total export for Cashew nut shell liquid/Cardanol to the world in 2017 were US$ 4.5 million primarily to Korea (US$2.9 million). India’s import for the same are not significant. The major value added products from CNSL produced in the country are Cardanol, CNSL resins, Recidol and many other high value products. The demand for CNSL and Cardanol is steady to high based on growing demand from the paint and varnish manufacturers. In recent years, emphasis has been given on effective utilization of naturally available and renewable resources for the development of raw materials for various polymer based products. Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL), and one of its ingredients, cardanol can be successfully exploited for the development of phenolic resins for the manufacture of different industrial products. The multi-functional role of cardanol and cardanol pre-polymers has been well documented in the literature in the last few years and it has left many options open to derive useful products out of this agricultural by-product. The phenolic nature of cardanol has prompted different researchers to react it with formaldehyde or with other aldehydes to produce numerous resinous materials just like those produced from phenol. An umpteen number of literature has been cited in the previous sections of this chapter highlighting the utilization of o- and p- functionality of cardanol. Besides, cardanol has an acidic-phenolic hydroxyl group and a long metasubstituted unsaturated hydrocarbon side chain which can be exploited fruitfully, for carrying out further chemical reactions, leading to new polymers. Cardanol-based active hydrogen compound containing various chemical groups is a choice of raw material for the development of such polyurethanes, as the systematic attempts are rather scanty. Further, the fact that CNSL is a renewable natural resource abundantly available at a low cost, adds to the scope of such an endeavor. Cardanol is one of the few aromatic biobased raw materials. The majority of biobased materials are aliphatic and therefore have a limited range of applications.
