A guar gum manufacturing business turns guar seed, a rain-fed crop grown mostly in Rajasthan, into splits or powder for oil and shale gas drilling, textile printing, food and paper. About 90% of the gum Indian plants make is exported, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), so your customers are overseas traders and oilfield-chemical buyers.
There are two ways in. Mill powder from bought-in splits, which the Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) project report for that route puts at ₹303 lakh of total capital investment. Or process seed from scratch, which the NPCS report for a 6-tonne-a-day plant puts at ₹705 lakh. Profit comes from the gap between seed cost and what gum and meal sell for, and that gap is thin. Exports earned about $550 million in 2024-25, against $3.3 billion at the 2012-13 peak, per Brookings. Plan for a steady processing business tied to American drilling, not a high-growth bet.
Splits, powder or derivatives: which guar product should you make first?
Start with powder milled from bought-in splits unless you already hold seed supply and storage.
| Product | What it is | Who buys it |
|---|---|---|
| Guar splits | Endosperm halves of the seed, undehusked or polished | Overseas millers, powder makers |
| Industrial powder | Refined splits milled to a set viscosity | Drilling, textile and paper users |
| Food and pharma powder | Same powder under tighter purity and microbial limits; buyers audit the plant | Ingredient buyers |
| Derivatives | Chemically modified guar | Specialised industrial users |
Powder is sold by gum content and viscosity: under the Agmark rules in the APEDA product profile, Grade I needs at least 80% gum and 3,000 centipoise. Derivatives are a separate chemical business, closer to chemical additives manufacturing.
What does a guar gum plant cost, and does it pay?
The NPCS reports Guar Gum Powder Using Splits and Guar Gum Powder show why the splits route is the safer first plant: less than half the capital and a lower break-even point.
| Item | Powder from bought splits | Powder from seed |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 900 MT a year | 6 MT a day |
| Plant and machinery | ₹89 lakh | ₹246 lakh |
| Total capital investment | ₹303 lakh | ₹705 lakh |
| Rate of return | 28% | 26% |
| Break-even point | 55% | 68% |
Margins stay thin because only 38 to 45% of a guar seed is endosperm, the part that becomes gum, according to a Texas Tech University seed analysis. CMB News reported Jodhpur gum at roughly twice the Hisar seed price in April 2026, so even full recovery of the endosperm returns about 90 paise per rupee of seed.
Guar meal, the germ and husk sold as feed, has to cover the rest plus your conversion cost. The APEDA profile puts its crude protein at about 42%. Get written meal offers before buying machinery; feed makers are the likely buyers, as in cattle feed manufacturing.
Who buys Indian guar gum, and how big is the export market?
India is the biggest exporter: it grows about 80% of the world's guar, and APEDA says Rajasthan supplies roughly 72% of it. In 2024-25 India shipped 474,519 tonnes worth $550.12 million, and Germany, the USA, Russia, Norway and China lead APEDA's 2025-26 destinations. Most volume goes into oil and shale gas drilling, so American rig activity moves your order book.
Brookings Institution figures for the first three years and APEDA's for 2024-25 show the boom years are not a base case.
| Year | Exports (tonnes) | Value ($ million) | Value per tonne ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2010-11 | about 317,000 | 520 | 1,640 |
| 2011-12 | about 525,000 | about 2,900 | 5,594 |
| 2012-13 | 261,000 | 3,300 | 12,528 |
| 2024-25 | 474,519 | 550 | about 1,160 (calculated) |
Plant owners paid for the bust: Business Standard reported in April 2016 that over 200 units were running at about 20% of capacity after the 2011 to 2013 expansion. If you cannot name two buyers yet, prove demand through export business ideas first.
How is guar gum made from seed to powder?
Plain guar powder is a mechanical process, following the roasting, differential attrition, sieving and polishing route in the APEDA profile.
- Clean the seed of stones, pods and dust.
- Roast and split. Brief roasting and rubbing (differential attrition) loosen the husk and free the endosperm halves, giving undehusked splits.
- Sieve out the germ and husk, which become meal.
- Polish off the remaining husk to get refined splits, which you can sell as they are.
- Pulverise the splits; the grinding route and sieving set mesh size and viscosity.
- Test each lot for viscosity, moisture, protein and microbial counts. Codex food-grade limits quoted by APEDA include moisture up to 15% and protein up to 10%.
- Pack in moisture-proof bags.
Which machines does a guar gum plant need?
A plant working from bought splits needs only the last two rows.
| Machine | Job in the plant |
|---|---|
| Seed cleaner and destoner | Removes stones, pods and dust |
| Roaster and attrition splitter | Frees the endosperm halves from husk and germ |
| Vibrating sifters and polisher | Separate germ and husk, then give refined splits |
| Pulveriser with classifier | Grinds splits and sorts by mesh size |
| Viscometer, moisture tester and packing line | Check each lot and fill moisture-proof bags |
Where should the plant stand, and how do you handle seed price swings?
Site it within reach of the Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat seed mandis; Rajasthan's industrial areas are the natural place to compare estates.
Guar is sown in July and August and harvested in October and November, so you buy and store at harvest or pay more later. Prices swing: CommodityOnline's mandi listings for 17 October 2026 showed average seed prices from ₹4,500 per quintal at Gondal to ₹8,045 at Suratgarh.
High prices also pull in acreage and then fall: Business Standard recorded seed area rising from 3.93 million to 5.17 million hectares in 2015-16, while gum fell from ₹85 to ₹60 a kg that season.
Which registrations does a guar gum exporter need?
Follow this order, because the APEDA registration needs the Import Export Code first.
| Step | Document | Issued by | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Udyam registration | Ministry of MSME | Proof of manufacturing for APEDA |
| 2 | Import Export Code | Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) | Needed before the next step |
| 3 | Registration-cum-membership certificate (RCMC) | APEDA, through the DGFT portal | Covers guar gum; valid 5 years; ₹5,900 online as of October 2026 (APEDA registration procedure) |
| 4 | Health certificate and lab report | Destination rules | The USA asks for both, says APEDA |
| 5 | HACCP certificate | Certification bodies | Food-grade buyers ask for it |
The European Union adds border checks: Agrolab's summary of the July 2023 update lists guar gum from India for pesticide-residue checks on 20% of consignments. Ask each buyer for the current rule.
What should you settle before you buy any machinery?
- Name two buyers and ask each for a specification and a trial order.
- Get written guar meal offers, because meal sales close the gap that gum leaves.
- Pick the splits route first unless you control seed supply and storage.
- Budget working capital for harvest-time seed buying and speak to a lender early; MSME schemes lists support for small units.
NPCS has prepared over 5,000 project reports across 40+ sectors since 1994, including both guar gum powder routes. A report covers the process flow, machinery with suppliers, input costs, break-even and cash flow for your capacity, in the format banks usually ask for. It supports a lender's decision and does not replace it. For other plants, see more manufacturing business guides.
Frequently asked questions about guar gum manufacturing
What is the price of 1 kg of guar gum powder?
It depends on grade and viscosity, and it swings with drilling demand. The guargumcultivation.com blog, quoting NCDEX futures, put industrial guar gum at about ₹117 per kg in early January 2026, with a 52-week range of ₹82 to ₹120. Ask a supplier for today's rate.
Who are the main guar gum manufacturers in India?
No public ranking names the largest. Persistence Market Research lists Vikas WSP, Neelkanth Polymers, Hindustan Gum & Chemicals, Shree Ram India Gums and Altrafine Gums among key players. Business Standard counted over 200 units in 2016, mainly in Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat.
Who buys guar gum inside India?
Home demand is the smaller side, since about 90% of output is exported. APEDA lists oil drilling, textile printing, human and pet food, paper, explosives and water treatment among the uses, so those industries are where home buyers sit.
Is guar gum manufacturing profitable?
Only on a thin and cyclical spread. Exports are worth far less than at the 2012-13 peak, and gum alone does not repay the seed, so guar meal sales matter. Judge it by your own seed cost, meal offers and signed buyers, not by headline export growth.
What is the Indian name for guar gum?
Guar gum keeps its English name in India. The plant is guar or gwar, known in English as cluster bean, and mandi lists show it as Gwar or Guaar. In Hindi script it is ग्वार.
