Steel, aluminium and copper processing plants sell to builders, cable makers, fabricators and solar installers, and a metal industry consultant helps you pick the right one before you commit capital. NPCS advises on TMT bars, aluminium extrusion, copper rod and wire, MS pipes and electroplating. Each project has its own pollution category, power needs and buyers. Our team prepares the metal industry project report that sets these out for your capacity and location.
Metal Industry Business Ideas in India
Demand for processed metal in India rises with infrastructure and housing, and with EVs and renewables, which pull in copper and aluminium. Metal industry business ideas in India therefore split into two groups. Steel products such as TMT bars and MS pipes follow construction activity. Copper and aluminium products follow electrical, solar and mobility growth.
The sector also includes metal finishing, where electroplating is often run as job work for engineering industries. Later project waves include sponge iron, ferro alloys and copper cathodes.
Main buyer groups
- Builders and contractors buying reinforcement bars and pipes
- Cable, motor and transformer makers buying copper rod and wire
- Window, solar frame and heat sink makers buying aluminium profiles
- Engineering units sending components for plating

Planning a Different Metal Industry Project?
These are a few of the projects we advise on. NPCS's published client list records 36 metals and metallurgy assignments, so tell us what you are planning.
How to Choose the Right Metal Industry Project
Start by comparing raw material, regulation and market across the options. A TMT bar plant rolls billets and a copper rod plant casts from cathode or refined scrap, so their inputs and price risks differ. MS pipe units form hot-rolled coil, while aluminium extrusion works from billets and can add anodising or powder coating. Electroplating suits a job work model, but its pollution load is heavier. A metal industry project consultant can weigh these against your budget and location.
| Project | Main inputs | Indicative investment | Power load |
|---|---|---|---|
| TMT Bar Plant | Steel billets/ingots, or scrap and sponge iron via induction furnace; reheating fuel; ferro-alloys | ~₹40–300+ crore | Very high, MW-scale, especially with melting |
| Aluminium Extrusion Plant | Aluminium billets (6063/6061/6082 alloys), H13 steel dies, anodising chemicals, powder-coating powders, packaging | ~₹20–150 crore | ~1–5 MW |
| Copper Rod and Wire Plant | Copper cathodes or high-grade scrap, cover materials, drawing lubricants, spools and drums | ~₹10–80 crore (up-cast plus drawing); CCR higher | ~1–5 MW |
| MS Pipe Manufacturing Plant | HR coils/strips, zinc (galvanising), cutting oils | ~₹15–100 crore | ~1–4 MW |
| Electroplating Unit | Plating chemicals and anodes, pre-treatment acids and alkalis, brighteners, passivates, water | ~₹50 lakh–₹5 crore (job-work unit); more for automatic lines and ZLD | ~50–500 kW |
Common Approvals for Metal Industry Plants
Most metal plants need a factory licence, consent to establish (CTE) before construction and consent to operate (CTO) before production. TMT bars and pipes also fall under BIS and the steel QCO. Units with pickling or plating need hazardous waste authorisation, and larger rolling or melting plants usually need an HT power connection. Pollution category ranges from Green for gas-fired rolling and extrusion to Red for pickling, plating and coal-fired melting.
Approvals Common to Metal Industry Plants
- BIS under the steel QCO (TMT, pipes)
- CTE/CTO
- Hazardous waste authorisation
- HT power connection
- Factory licence
Pollution Category by Project (CPCB, January 2025)
- TMT Bar Plant
- Rolling mill: Orange with coal/oil-fired reheating (CPCB Jan-2025 classification report, Annexure-I S.No. 103.2), Green if gas-fired (103.3), Red if pickling is involved (103.1). Melting on induction furnace (electricity): Orange (99.2/104.2); coal/liquid-fuel melting: Red (99.1)

Schemes and Policy Changes Affecting Metal Projects
State industrial policies may offer capital subsidy and power-duty exemption, and critical-mineral recycling incentives are relevant to recovery-based projects. Eligibility differs by state, so check current terms before finalising location. Two regulatory points deserve attention: enforcement of the steel QCO and inspection rules for imported scrap. Both can affect product sale and raw material planning.
Schemes and Incentives
- State industrial policies (capital subsidy, power-duty exemption)
- Critical-mineral recycling incentives
Policy Changes to Track
- Steel QCO enforcement
- Scrap import inspection rules
