The best business ideas in Kenya right now are the ones where Kenyans already spend money and local supply is thin. Three stand out. Kenya imports most of its edible oil, and the government is pushing farmers to grow sunflower and soybean for local presses. Producers must now take their packaging back, which creates work for anyone who can collect and sort it. Meanwhile most of Kenya's chickens are low laying local birds, so a well fed flock of improved layers has room to win.

Under KSh 100,000, start with a service you can sell from your phone, such as writing, design or tutoring, because there is no stock to lose. From KSh 100,000 to KSh 500,000, add stock based ideas such as a food kiosk or a layer unit. Oil pressing and similar processing sit above KSh 1 million and should wait for machine quotes. M-Pesa agency and mitumba deserve more caution than most startup lists give them.

Which business ideas in Kenya fit KSh 100,000, KSh 500,000 or KSh 1 million?

Your budget decides whether you buy skills, stock or machines. Treat these bands as planning guides, not quotes, and get local prices before paying for anything.

BudgetIdeas that usually fitWhat the money mostly buys
Under KSh 100,000Writing, design, social media or tutoring services; a home bakery selling to order; a first flock of layersData, basic tools, chicks and feed
KSh 100,000 to 500,000Barbershop, food kiosk, phone accessories, a small layer unitRent deposit, fitting out, opening stock
KSh 500,000 to 1 millionCleaning or laundry service, a larger layer unit, packaging waste collectionEquipment, a vehicle or premises
Above KSh 1 millionEdible oil pressing, dairy or fruit processingMachines, premises and product approvals

Why is edible oil pressing a strong business idea in Kenya?

Kenya uses roughly 600,000 tonnes of edible oil a year, and the Agriculture and Food Authority says imports meet 90 to 95 percent of it, according to The Star's March 2026 report on the government's sunflower and soybean drive. The drive backs new seed varieties, farmer groups and private investment in processing.

Seed is the small cost. Sunflower seed from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) sells at about KSh 310 a kilo and farmers need 20 to 30 kilos an acre, so seed costs roughly KSh 6,200 to KSh 9,300 an acre. The report names bird damage as the main problem, so ask growers how they will protect the crop. A press without steady seed sits idle, so line up growers first and compare machine quotes using the cold pressed oil business guide.

Can packaging waste collection become a business under Kenya's producer rules?

Since 4 November 2024, producers, importers and brand owners must register with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), hold an annual licence and set up systems to take back used packaging, according to Packaging Gateway's June 2025 report on the Extended Producer Responsibility rules. Fees depend on the volume they sell, and they can join producer responsibility organisations to share the duty.

That makes producers a likely buyer for a collector who delivers clean, sorted material reliably. The rules regulate producers, not collectors, so ask NEMA what a small collector needs before buying a vehicle or baler. To process what you collect, read the plastic waste recycling guide.

Are eggs and layers still a safe way to start?

The Kenya News Agency reported in January 2025 that Kenya has about 42 million poultry, of which 82 percent are indigenous chickens and 9 percent commercial layers. An improved indigenous breed is expected to lay 230 to 250 eggs a year against 80 to 100 for a local hen, and the same report says much of Western Kenya's egg supply comes from Uganda.

Feed is the cost to plan around, because the report calls it expensive and sometimes unavailable. Price feed from two suppliers before ordering chicks. The poultry farming guide covers the basics, and the animal feed manufacturing guide helps if you plan to mix your own.

M-Pesa agency tops many lists, yet Business Daily's analysis of Safaricom figures shows average commission per agent falling two years running, to KSh 112,244 in the year to March 2026, about KSh 9,353 a month before rent, float costs and staff. The Communications Authority counted 568,463 registered agents in June 2026. Open a till only if you already have a shop with steady foot traffic.

Mitumba, or second hand clothing, sells everywhere, and Business Daily reported in April 2025 that China supplies more than half of Kenya's used clothing shipments. A proposed 5 percent charge on mitumba imports was debated before the Finance Act 2026, but President Ruto said on 23 June 2026, when signing it, that there was no proposal to tax mitumba. The risks you control are bale quality and stock that does not move.

Can any business idea in Kenya earn KSh 1,000 a day?

Possibly, but daily takings are not profit. KSh 1,000 a day is about KSh 26,000 to KSh 30,000 a month, roughly three times the average M-Pesa agent's commission above, and KSh 5,000 a day is about KSh 130,000 to KSh 150,000. Subtract rent, stock, wages, transport and tax before judging an idea.

What must you register and pay before you start a business in Kenya?

Registering a business name costs KSh 950, so most early effort goes into the county permit and tax set up.

Where should you start this month?

  1. Pick one idea from the budget table and write down the daily takings you need after costs.
  2. Collect two or three local prices for stock, rent, a machine or feed.
  3. Ask five likely customers to pay in advance for a first batch or job.
  4. Register your business name and join eTIMS once your first customer pays.
  5. For borrowing, the Hustler Fund personal loan is capped at KSh 50,000 at 8 percent a year, per its FAQ page. Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) signed an agreement with Sidian Bank in September 2026 to build a fund for small and medium businesses, so ask KIE for current terms.

Frequently asked questions about starting a business in Kenya

What is the most profitable business to start in Kenya?

No single idea wins in every town. Profit depends on whether nearby customers already buy the product and on what rent, stock and wages take from daily takings. Edible oil pressing and packaging waste collection show the clearest unmet demand in 2026, but both need quotes and approvals first.

What kind of business can I start with KSh 70,000?

A service sold from your phone fits KSh 70,000, because it needs data, basic tools and a few paid test jobs rather than stock. A small flock of improved layers is the other option, but price feed for the whole laying cycle first.

What sells faster in Kenya?

Goods people buy daily, such as food, airtime and soap, sell fastest. They also carry thin margins and quick spoilage or theft, so sell a small first batch and watch how fast it clears before restocking in bulk.

How much money do you need to start a business in Kenya?

It depends on whether you are buying skills, stock or machines. A business name costs KSh 950, a private company KSh 10,650, and processing needs machine quotes first. Hold back money for early rent, wages and stock, because first sales rarely cover them.

What business can I start immediately?

A phone based service such as writing, tutoring or social media management can start this week, because it needs no stock or premises. Register your business name and join eTIMS once your first customer pays, so your tax records are clean from the start.
