The top industries in Andhra Pradesh are seafood and aquaculture, agro and food processing, pharmaceuticals, steel, automobiles, energy, textiles and mineral-based units, and each has its own home belt. Seafood, steel, bulk drugs and the new refinery and green-fuel projects line the coast from Visakhapatnam to Nellore. Cars are built at Anantapur, near the Karnataka border. Chilli trade centres on Guntur, and India's barytes comes almost entirely from Andhra Pradesh, centred on Kadapa.
Visakhapatnam district earns the most per person in the state, so it is the answer if you are asking which area is the most developed. Several of the biggest announcements are still projects, though, not running plants. This page separates what operates today from what is planned, shows where industrial land and approvals sit, and ends with a way to pick a sector that fits your budget.
What are the top industries in Andhra Pradesh and where are they based?
Agriculture and allied activities made up about 35% of the state's value added in 2024-25, industry 23% and services 42%, according to the state's Socio-Economic Survey 2024-25. Per capita income was ₹2,68,653 against ₹2,00,162 for India. The sectors below are where the plants and the export money sit.
| Industry | Home belt | What shows its weight |
|---|---|---|
| Aquaculture and seafood | Godavari and Krishna deltas, Visakhapatnam port | About 30% of India's fish output (state survey). Close to half of India's seafood exports passed through Visakhapatnam port, per a Commerce Ministry reply in Parliament reported in July 2026 |
| Agro and food processing | Guntur and the delta districts | About 40% of India's chilli (2020, Guntur district administration). Guntur Mirchi Yard is called Asia's largest chilli market |
| Pharmaceuticals | Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Nellore | Over 250 bulk drug units, 38 WHO-approved and 20 USFDA-approved facilities (state investment board, undated). Clusters include JN Pharma City and the special economic zones at Atchutapuram, Pydibhimavaram and Naidupeta |
| Steel and metals | Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli | One public-sector plant operating, one very large private plant at the foundation stage (see below) |
| Automobiles and electronics | Anantapur region | Kia's Anantapur plant has about 3 lakh vehicles a year of installed capacity (Autocar Pro, August 2026). The Centre's January 2026 electronics component approvals also include Andhra Pradesh projects (IANS) |
| Energy and green fuels | Kakinada, Pudimadaka, Ramayapatnam | Renewable capacity of 13,488 MW including hydro on 31 July 2025 (MNRE data, via Renewable Watch) |
| Textiles and apparel | Visakhapatnam for apparel; mills and parks in other districts | 106 spinning mills with nearly 3 lakh spindles and 12,635 power looms in 2022-23, per the state textiles minister; Brandix India Apparel City is the anchor apparel park |
| Minerals | Kadapa | The Indian Bureau of Mines puts about 92% of India's barytes resources in the state, with Mangampet in Kadapa the world's largest single deposit |
Which is the most developed city in Andhra Pradesh?
Visakhapatnam, on the measure most people mean. Advance estimates for 2025-26, reported by Deccan Chronicle in April 2026, put its district income at ₹6,58,964 per head, more than twice the state average of ₹2,94,507. Vijayawada is the second-largest city, with 10,48,240 people in the 2011 Census. Eluru and Tirupati complete the top five districts.
| Position | District | Reported detail |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Visakhapatnam | ₹6,58,964 per head |
| 2 | Krishna | Income grew 17.85% in the year |
| 3 | NTR (Vijayawada) | Home of the state's second-largest city |
| Last | Kurnool | Slipped to the bottom this year |
Per-head income favours districts with a few capital-heavy plants, so it says little about how many jobs or small units a district supports. Kurnool, last on this list, is now getting the Orvakal industrial node described below.
What is already running and what is only announced?
Lists of Andhra Pradesh industries tend to mix both. Two of the six projects below are producing today; the rest are commitments.
| Project | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Kia car plant | Anantapur | Running; a second line of about 2 lakh vehicles is only being studied, with no investment decision (Autocar Pro) |
| Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL) | Visakhapatnam | Operating, rated at 7.3 million tonnes of liquid steel a year; the Union Cabinet approved a ₹11,440 crore revival package in January 2025 |
| AM/NS India steel plant | Rajayyapeta, Anakapalli | Foundation laid 23 March 2026; 8.2 million tonnes, over ₹70,000 crore; steel production planned from the first quarter of 2029 (AM/NS India) |
| BPCL refinery | Ramayapatnam | Proposed at 180,000 to 240,000 barrels a day, about $11 billion; 6,000 acres allotted; the state wants operations by January 2029; no formal approval had been reported in December 2025 |
| Google AI hub | Visakhapatnam | Announced October 2025; about $15 billion over 2026 to 2030 with AdaniConnex and Airtel (Google) |
| Green ammonia | Kakinada | Jakson Green won a national auction to supply 85,000 tonnes a year to Coromandel International |
Kia's suppliers have demand today. Demand from the steel, refinery and data-centre projects arrives mostly in 2029 and later, so a fabrication or logistics unit aimed at them has to fund a long wait.
Where can a new unit get land and approvals?
Land mostly comes through industrial parks developed by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC). Approvals run through the state's Single Desk portal, which reports a 99.2% clearance rate in the state survey. Six ports operate, and the survey names Kakinada, Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam among them.
| Corridor | Andhra Pradesh nodes | Size per the state survey |
|---|---|---|
| Visakhapatnam-Chennai | Visakhapatnam, Chittoor, Kopparthy | About 33,000 acres across three nodes |
| Chennai-Bengaluru | Krishnapatnam North | 10,834 acres |
| Hyderabad-Bengaluru | Orvakal, Kurnool | 2,621 acres |
Orvakal and Kopparthy, the two newest nodes, were inaugurated in 2025. Incentives sit in the state's MSME and Entrepreneur Development Policy 4.0 for 2024-29 and change with unit size and sector, so read the current order before you budget. The Andhra Pradesh government schemes page covers them, and the state-wise industries hub shows how neighbours compare, for instance Tamil Nadu.
What can go wrong with an Andhra Pradesh industrial project?
Shrimp is the exposed sector. US duties on Indian shrimp reached up to 58% from August 2025. A February 2026 trade deal cut the US rate to 18%, about 26% in all, but Business Standard reported that importers had already placed their 2026 advance orders by late December or early January, and some producers lost up to 60% of orders in the previous three months.
Pharma and chemical units need effluent treatment and pollution board consent in place before commissioning, so check that timeline before machinery. And any plan that rests on an announced anchor project inherits that project's schedule.
How do you pick an industry that suits you?
Test every idea against three questions, in this order.
- Is the raw material or the buyer within a day's truck run?
- Does your budget cover the machinery and the wait for payment?
- Can you staff the unit in the district where the approvals and land are available?
Seafood and chilli units pass the first test in the districts that grow the crop; start with fish farming if you want the primary end. Near Kia, auto component manufacturing at least has a known type of customer. Around Visakhapatnam, API manufacturing and steel and metal products follow the clusters, while a spinning mill depends on cotton access and power cost.
What should you do next?
Shortlist two districts and visit the APIIC park office in each. Register the unit on the Single Desk portal and get a Udyam registration. Ask three nearby buyers for written demand before you commit to machinery. Then compare your shortlist with the business ideas for Andhra Pradesh, and have a project report drawn up for the bank.
Frequently asked questions
What are the top 10 industries in Andhra Pradesh?
Seafood and aquaculture, agro and food processing, pharmaceuticals, steel and metals, automobiles, electronics, energy and green fuels, textiles and apparel, minerals such as barytes, and ports with logistics. IT and data centres are rising, helped by Google's planned Visakhapatnam hub.
Which is the richest city in Andhra Pradesh?
Visakhapatnam leads on district income per head, at ₹6,58,964 in the 2025-26 advance estimates. Vijayawada is the second-largest city by population. The answer changes with the measure: income, population or industrial output.
Which are the top companies in Andhra Pradesh?
Kia in Anantapur, RINL's Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Brandix India Apparel City operate today. AM/NS India, BPCL and Google are building or planning large projects. This page does not rank by revenue, so treat top-10 company lists elsewhere with care.
What is the best small-scale industry in Andhra Pradesh?
The one tied to a local anchor you can serve: seafood packaging and cold chain, chilli grading and powder near Guntur, or fabrication work for the steel and auto plants. Pick the district first, then fit the idea to your budget.
Does Andhra Pradesh have an industrial policy for MSMEs?
Yes. The state survey cites the MSME and Entrepreneur Development Policy 4.0 for 2024-29. Incentive amounts vary by unit size and sector, so confirm the current figure on the Single Desk portal before you finalise costs.
