The Chennai automotive hub is a belt of car, truck and two-wheeler plants, plus the suppliers that feed them, running out of the city through Sriperumbudur and Oragadam towards Maraimalai Nagar. Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state's investment promotion agency, says Tamil Nadu makes about 36% of India's two-wheelers, 25% of its four-wheelers, 35% of its auto components and 40% of its tyres. Hyundai alone says it has exported more than 3.9 million Tamil Nadu-built vehicles to over 150 countries.

The belt is changing in 2026. Hyundai opened its first big plant outside Tamil Nadu, in Pune, on 14 October, yet it has pledged over ₹26,000 crore to the state through 2032 and plans to buy more of its parts locally. Ford is preparing to return with an engine plant, and new factories have opened in Ranipet and Thoothukudi. If you run or plan a small manufacturing unit, your opening is in supplying parts to these plants. The sections below show who is where, what changed, and what to check before you pick a product or a site.

Who is in the Chennai automotive hub, and where?

The automobile industry in Chennai has two layers. The core belt holds the big passenger car and truck plants, while the newest EV and luxury plants sit further out in Ranipet, Hosur, Krishnagiri and Thoothukudi. Plant locations below come from company releases and press reports opened for this page. Capacity figures are left out because the sources disagree.

Where is Hyundai's Chennai plant, and how many plants does it have in India?

Hyundai now runs two Indian plants, Chennai and, since 14 October 2026, Pune, but the larger pledge still sits in Tamil Nadu. The table is built from Hyundai's June 2026 release and Autocar India's report on the Pune opening.

How far is the corridor from Chennai and its ports?

The main SIPCOT parks, run by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu, sit 35 to 50 km from the city. JETRO's August 2024 list of industrial parks around Chennai puts Irungattukottai about 35 km south-west, Gummidipoondi about 40 km north, and Sriperumbudur and Oragadam about 50 km south-west. Guidance Tamil Nadu adds that every manufacturing facility in the state lies within three hours of a port or airport.

One export gateway is Kamarajar Port at Ennore. Autocar Professional reported in March 2023 that Renault Nissan had shipped over 1.15 million cars through it since 2010, to about 108 destinations. In July 2026 the port extended Isuzu's export agreement by five years, although Isuzu builds in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, so the Ennore berths also serve plants from neighbouring states.

Where can a small manufacturer fit into Chennai's auto supply chain?

Hyundai says it will buy about ₹4,000 crore more from Tamil Nadu suppliers as its localisation rises, which is a concrete demand signal. Small units usually enter through a tier 1 supplier, not the carmaker. Guidance Tamil Nadu names Visteon, Valeo, Bosch, ZF, Aptiv, Harman and Forvia among the tier 1 firms in the state.

Sort your product into one of three groups before you look at machines:

  • Parts that fall away in an EV: engine and exhaust components. The NITI Aayog report on the auto sector shows engine and transmission parts made 65% of India's auto component exports in FY24, and it expects 40% of light vehicles sold worldwide to be electric by 2030, removing an estimated 190 components. Engine parts still matter for hybrids, which Hyundai's Pune lines can build.
  • Parts that stay: brakes, wheels, seats, wiring, fasteners and tyres. Tamil Nadu already makes 40% of India's tyres.
  • EV-specific parts: battery enclosures, power electronics and charging hardware. Hyundai says it is localising power electronics, and our battery manufacturing guide covers one route in.

Two dates show the runway. Ford's export engines are not expected before 2029, and Hyundai's new capacity is now split between Chennai and Pune. A supplier tied to one plant should ask which plant gets the next model.

What state support applies, and where do you check the numbers?

The state's Industrial Policy 2021, announced in February 2021, offers a structured package whose size depends on project size and district category (A, B or C). It covers an investment promotion subsidy, a training subsidy, an electricity tax incentive and a refund of SGST on capital goods. EV makers also fall under the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023.

This page quotes no rates, because they change with project size, district and policy revisions. Run your own project through the incentive calculator linked from the Guidance Tamil Nadu automobile page, and get the result confirmed in writing before you build a loan proposal around it. Our Tamil Nadu government schemes page covers the wider set of state schemes for small units.

What should you do before choosing a Chennai site or product?

  1. Name the one plant you could realistically supply, and list the part categories it buys. Hyundai's release is the clearest public statement of what a carmaker plans to localise.
  2. Place your product in one of the three groups above. If it depends on the engine, line up hybrid or export customers before you order machines. The auto components manufacturing guide covers process and machinery.
  3. Pick a park near that plant. If Hosur suits you better, compare Karnataka's industrial areas on the Bengaluru side, and see how other states stack up in our guide to industrial areas across India.
  4. Test your idea against engineering business ideas and Tamil Nadu business ideas to see which parts category suits your budget and skills.
  5. Before you order machines, ask a tier 1 supplier on your shortlist what vendor approval and sample checks it requires.

Frequently asked questions about Chennai's auto belt

Why is Chennai called the Detroit of Asia?

It is a nickname for the cluster of carmakers, truck makers and component suppliers around one port city, not an official ranking. Madras Musings notes that Chennai already led in components when Ford signed its Maraimalai Nagar agreement in 1995 and Hyundai set up at Irungattukottai in 1996.

Is Ford coming back to Chennai?

Yes, as an engine maker rather than a carmaker. Ford announced in 2021 that it would stop building cars in Chennai. In October 2025 it signed an agreement with the state to turn Maraimalai Nagar into an export engine plant worth about $370 million, with production expected in 2029, Automotive World reported.

How much of India's electric two-wheeler output comes from Tamil Nadu?

Guidance Tamil Nadu puts it at nearly 60%. The scooter plants are not in the Chennai belt: Ather builds at Hosur and Ola Electric at Krishnagiri, in the north-west of the state. A parts supplier chasing those buyers should look at sites on that side.

Which other Tamil Nadu cities are automobile hubs?

Guidance Tamil Nadu lists seven: Chennai, Ranipet, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. Hosur, in Krishnagiri district, sits on a Chennai, Bengaluru and Hosur corridor that NITI Aayog counts among South India's three major auto clusters.
