You can start a marble business in India in three ways: trade in stone, cut and fit it to order, or process raw blocks into polished slabs. The money needed differs sharply between them. Trading needs a godown or showroom, a dependable supplier and credit to hold stock. Cut to size work adds cutting and polishing machines. Block processing is a plant: in the Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) project report for a 30,000 sq m a year marble and granite cutting and polishing unit, the cost of project is ₹293 lakh, of which ₹196 lakh is machinery. Start with trading or fabrication unless you already have buyers for a plant's full output. Rajasthan holds about 63% of India's marble resources, so your supplier relationships shape your margin more than your shop does.

How much does each way into the marble business cost?

Machinery sets the budget, and only the processing route has a published costing. For the others, the figure depends on stock held and the quotes you collect.

Trading and showroomBuy slabs and tiles from processors or importers and sell to builders and homeownersStock held, rent, days of credit you giveNone verified. Get dealer quotes

In that report machinery is about two thirds of the cost of project. The other ₹97 lakh is not itemised on the report's public page. The page warns that figures change with the plant, so use them to size a project, not to fix it. The report covers marble and granite together, so a marble only plant may differ.

Is a marble business profitable in India?

Profit depends on the route. In the NPCS report the processing unit shows a return of 46% and a break even of 78%. Read as a share of capacity, that break even means the plant must sell most of what it can make before it earns anything. A processing unit with no firm buyers is the riskiest way in.

Traders earn on the gap between the supplier's rate and their own, and lose part of it to breakage, shade mismatch and slow payment. Slabs from different blocks can differ in shade, so sell one job from one lot. A Stone World fabrication case study describes processors marking lot and sequence on slab sides so slabs can be matched later.

Imports press on every route. A Stonenews.eu report puts India's marble imports in Q1 2025 at $94.5 million, up 69% on Q1 2024, with raw marble 97% of the volume at an average price between $223 and $245 a tonne. Imported stone reaches the same builders you sell to, so test your price against imported rates. Tile makers, covered under tiles manufacturing, compete for the same flooring orders.

Where does Indian marble come from, and where should you buy it?

Makrana is the best known mining centre; the Indian Minerals Yearbook's Rajasthan chapter calls it the world famous centre for marble mining. Wikipedia gives Kishangarh the nickname Marble City of India, and Udaipur has its own marble processors' association, as the Stonenews.eu report shows. The same report names Turkey as a key supplier of processed marble to India.

Buy where you can see the stone. Inspect the actual lot for shade and flaws, and ask each supplier to quote the same variety, thickness and finish so quotes compare. Dealers talk in square feet, while the NPCS report counts in square metres, so convert before you compare.

How is marble processed, and which machines does a plant need?

This flow follows a Stone World fabrication case study of a plant making slabs and tiles.

  1. Saw the block into rough slabs on a gang saw, a frame of parallel blades.
  2. Polish the rough slabs on a multi head slab polisher and inspect them. Polish defective slabs again.
  3. For tiles, saw thin slabs, cut strips, calibrate them to even thickness, polish on a polishing line and cut to final size.
  4. Bevel tile edges, dry, inspect and box the tiles.
  5. For counters and steps, cut and edge the slab on a numerically controlled stone working centre and an edging machine.
  6. Collect water and slurry from every wet machine.

A processing plant needs every machine below; a fabrication shop needs the last two.

Which registrations and permissions does a marble business need?

Register the firm first, then add the permissions your route triggers.

RegistrationWho needs itWhat to know
Udyam registrationEvery routeFree on the Ministry of MSME portal. Needs Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN. No renewal
Goods and Services Tax (GST) registrationSellers of goodsThe GST Council's September 2025 release cut GST on marble and travertine blocks from 12% to 5%, effective 22 September 2025. The release names blocks only, so check slabs and tiles by HSN code
Pollution control consentProcessing unitsIssued by the State Pollution Control Board. Ask which category your unit falls in. See the slurry note below
Import Export CodeFirms that import or exportApplied for on the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) portal. The user manual lists the documents
Local municipal permissionShops, yards, workshopsRules differ by city. Ask your municipal office

Budget for slurry before you buy land

Cutting and polishing produce slurry, a wet mix of stone dust and water. Down To Earth reported draft guidelines from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), released in August 2025, that propose lined storage on the premises, GPS enabled vehicles for removal, written agreements between slurry generators and users, and a utilisation plan in consent conditions. Marble and granite units are estimated to generate 5 to 6 million tonnes of slurry a year, mostly in Rajasthan. Cement and tile makers are among the proposed users, so cement products manufacturing is one outlet. Those were drafts, so ask the State Pollution Control Board what applies before you design the yard.

What to do before you buy any machine or stock

  1. Pick one route and one customer group, such as builders or architects, and ask five of them what variety and finish they buy.
  2. Collect written quotes from three suppliers for the same variety, thickness and finish.
  3. Register on Udyam and for GST.
  4. For a plant, get machine quotes and ask the State Pollution Control Board what slurry plan it wants. Compare sites through the industrial areas of Rajasthan and Rajasthan government schemes.
  5. For exports, read export business ideas. To compare marble with other lines, see construction materials business ideas.

Lenders usually ask for a project report, and a detailed project report follows a set structure. An NPCS project report for a marble processing unit covers the market survey, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, manpower, project cost, working capital, profitability, break even and cash flow, in the format banks usually ask for. It does not replace the supplier quotes you collect for your own city and capacity.

Frequently asked questions about starting a marble business

What is the price of 1 sq ft marble in India?

It varies too widely for one honest figure. Price depends on variety, thickness, finish, grade and whether the stone is Indian or imported. Ask three dealers to quote the same specification, and check whether the rate is per square foot or per square metre.

Which colour marble is costly?

No colour is dearer on its own. Price rises with the rarity of the variety, how even the colour and veining are, how many sellable slabs a block yields and whether the stone is imported.

Can I start a marble business with ₹50,000?

Not as a trader or processor, because stock and machines cost far more. With ₹50,000 you can work as a sales agent for a dealer or run a small fitting and polishing team, then move into trading once you have regular customers. See MSME business ideas for other small budget options.

Do I need a quarry to start a marble business?

No. Traders and processors buy blocks or slabs from quarry owners, importers and wholesalers. Quarrying is a separate business with its own state permissions, not covered here.
