An eggshell powder manufacturing business makes or loses money on which buyer you sell to, not on the grinder you buy. In October 2026, IndiaMART sellers asked anywhere from ₹28 to ₹1,300 a kilo, with feed lots at the cheap end and cosmetic and supplement grades at the dear end. Shells cost little, and India produced 149.11 billion eggs in 2024-25, so supply exists. What is scarce is clean shell and a buyer who has approved your sample. Begin with feed and soil-calcium buyers, who accept washed, boiled, dried and milled powder, and add food or cosmetic grades once you can test every batch. Plants of 2 and 5 tonnes a day cost ₹42 lakh and ₹226 lakh in two project reports by Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS), so this eggshell business is a factory decision, not a kitchen-table one.
What does eggshell powder sell for, and which buyer pays most?
The median asking price across the 28 eggshell powder listings IndiaMART showed in October 2026 was ₹250 a kilo, and 20 of the 28 sat between ₹90 and ₹350. These are asking prices, some for small packs, so negotiate bulk lots from the middle. Cosmetic and food grades reach the highest asks.
| Stated use | Listings | Asking price (₹/kg) | What that buyer checks first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal and pet feed | 4 | 28-420 | Calcium percentage, moisture, mesh |
| Soil and agriculture | 3 | 200-300 | Price per tonne, steady supply |
| Cosmetics | 4 | 150-1,300 | Fineness, colour, microbe and metal tests |
| Pharma and traditional medicine | 2 | 55-590 | Purity, test certificate |
| Food, supplement and multi-use | 5 | 100-1,080 | Licence, lab report, traceability |
Feed buyers want proof, summarised in the feed FAQ below. See animal feed manufacturing, organic fertiliser manufacturing and cosmetic manufacturing for how those buyers work.
How much does an eggshell powder manufacturing business cost, and does it pay?
Two NPCS project reports on this product show what scale changes. Figures are as printed in each summary table.
| NPCS report | Capacity | Plant and machinery | Cost of project | Return | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eggshell Powder | 2 tonnes/day | ₹11 lakh | ₹42 lakh | 30% | 79% |
| Eggshell Powder Manufacturing | 5 tonnes/day | ₹16 lakh | ₹226 lakh | 29% | 52% |
Machinery is the small part of the bill: about a quarter of project cost in the 2 tonne report and about 7% in the 5 tonne one. The rest covers items each full report itemises, so budget for building, power, testing and working capital too. Return is almost the same in both, but break-even is 79% against 52%, so ask which volume and grade each report assumes. The 5 tonne report says shells come at no cost from poultry farms, bakeries and egg processors, but haulage is not free. Figures vary with capacity, location and technology, and a lender will want a project-specific report.
How is eggshell powder made?
Shell is mostly calcium carbonate, above 90% of its weight in a 2019 review in Trends in Food Science & Technology, which is why the powder sells as a calcium source.
- Receive, sort and wash. Reject wet, smelly or mouldy lots, wash the rest the same day, and rinse off albumen with potable water.
- Sanitise. A study in a University of Dhaka journal found tap-water washing and 10 minutes of boiling decontaminated shells.
- Dry. Hot-air or tray dryers hold moisture steady. Sun drying is cheaper but hard to document for food buyers.
- Crush and mill. A crusher breaks the shell and a hammer, pulveriser or ball mill grinds it. The Dhaka study's fine powder measured 3.47 to 5.94 microns; one feed-grade listing offers 80 mesh.
- Sieve and grade. A vibrating sieve splits fine from coarse grades. Membrane separation is its own product and process, so treat it as phase two.
- Test and pack. Check moisture, calcium, heavy metals and microbes on every batch, and pack in moisture-proof bags. The Dhaka samples had chromium, lead and arsenic below detection, but your shell source decides yours.
The NPCS reports put machinery at ₹11 lakh to ₹16 lakh, so ask each supplier for a trial run on your own shells.
| Machine | What it does | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Washing and boiling vessels | Remove albumen, sanitise | Water use, fuel per batch |
| Hot-air or tray dryer | Cuts moisture before milling | Power per kg dried |
| Crusher with pulveriser or ball mill | Breaks and grinds to target mesh | Wear parts, dust control |
| Vibrating sieve | Separates grades | Mesh sizes on offer |
| Lab kit and packing machine | Tests batches, weighs, seals bags | Calibration, bag lining |
Where do you get enough clean eggshells?
Shell is about a tenth of an egg's weight (9 to 12% in a 2024 BIO Web of Conferences paper), so a plant making 2 tonnes of powder a day needs the shells of roughly 20 tonnes of eggs every day, before moisture and membrane losses. Egg-breaking units that make liquid egg or egg powder give shell in volume at one gate, though it arrives wet. Hatchery shell carries chick residue; bakeries and hotels give cleaner shell in scattered lots.
Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Karnataka produced 64.37% of India's eggs in 2024-25 in the Press Information Bureau release on Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025, so a site near one of them cuts haulage of wet shell. Get written supply commitments for most of your first-year volume before ordering machinery.
Which licences does an eggshell powder business need?
The licence follows the grade you sell.
| Sold as | What applies (as of October 2026) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Food or supplement ingredient | Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence or registration, plus the permitted ingredients in its 2016 supplement and nutraceutical regulations | On the FSSAI licensing page, registration covers turnover up to ₹12 lakh and 100 kg a day, and a central licence applies above 2 tonnes a day of installed capacity. A 2 tonne plant sits on that line, so ask the licensing officer. |
| Fertiliser or soil amendment | Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985: Form A1 intimation for manufacturers and dealers, and a manufacture certificate for organic fertilisers and mixtures | Ask your state agriculture department whether plain eggshell powder counts as a fertiliser under the Order before you label it so. |
| Feed or cosmetic ingredient | The buyer's specification | Expect to send a lab report on calcium, moisture and contaminants. |
How do you find buyers and sell eggshell powder?
Make a trial lot, get one lab report on it, and sell on that paper.
- Ask each buyer for its written specification, and sample feed mills and organic-input makers first. Approach cosmetic and supplement formulators only with graded, tested lots.
- List on B2B marketplaces such as IndiaMART, quote bulk lots per tonne, and keep a retained sample of every batch so a complaint can be traced.
What to do before you order the first machine
- Pick the first buyer and get its specification in writing.
- Locate shell supply near one of the five egg states and ask for commitments.
- Get dryer and mill quotes from two suppliers, with trial runs on your shells.
- Lenders and government schemes for MSMEs ask for a project report, so prepare one first.
An NPCS project report on this product, from a team consulting since 1994 with 5,000+ project reports behind it, covers the market survey, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, land, building and manpower, and financials from project cost to break-even and cash flow. It follows the format banks and government schemes typically ask for, and acceptance remains the lender's decision. Other product plans are in our manufacturing business guides.
Frequently asked questions
Is the eggshell powder business profitable?
It can be, if the plant sells the right grade at volume. Shells cost little, asking prices run from ₹28 to ₹1,300 a kilo, and the two NPCS reports show returns of 30% and 29%. Feed-grade lots sit at the bottom of that range, so check which grade each projection assumes.
How many eggs does it take to make 1 kg of eggshell powder?
About 9 to 12 kg of eggs. Shell is roughly 9 to 12% of an egg's weight in a 2024 BIO Web of Conferences paper, so 1 kg of dry shell comes from about that weight of eggs. Washing, membrane and moisture losses mean you should plan on the upper end of that range.
How long can eggshell powder be stored?
Dry powder in sealed, moisture-proof bags keeps well. The main threat is moisture, which lets mould and microbes grow, so storage conditions matter more than the calendar. Set the exact shelf life with a stability test on your own grade, and print the production date on every bag so a buyer can trace it.
Can eggshell powder replace limestone in poultry feed?
In one 2023 broiler trial, yes, at 1% of the diet: eggshell flour in place of limestone did not significantly change final weight, feed conversion or carcass yield. That was one trial of 7 pens per treatment, so feed mills will still want their own tests on your powder.
