A ₹50 lakh budget can mean two very different things, and most lists on this topic mix them. If ₹50 lakh is what you will spend on plant and machinery, the whole unit costs far more once land, building and working capital are added. If it is every rupee you have, you need a smaller unit, with machinery well below ₹50 lakh.
The seven 50 lakh business ideas below belong to the first group. In the project reports of Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) behind them, machinery costs ₹43 lakh to ₹50 lakh and the full project costs ₹86 lakh to ₹3.03 crore. The useful question is therefore not which product looks profitable, but which unit you can finance in full and whether you can name your first three buyers before ordering a machine.
What does ₹50 lakh actually cover in a factory project?
The same figure is used for three different limits, and mixing them up breaks the financing plan.
| Where "₹50 lakh" appears | What it measures | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| NPCS project reports in the ₹40-50 lakh bracket | Plant and machinery only | The full project costs ₹86 lakh to ₹3.03 crore, so plan for a loan or partners |
| Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) project cost limit | The whole project, working capital included, capped at ₹50 lakh in manufacturing | Only a unit sized to ₹50 lakh in total qualifies, so its machinery bill must be much lower |
| Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) classification | Investment in plant and machinery or equipment; micro means up to ₹2.5 crore and ₹10 crore turnover (from 1 April 2025) | A ₹50 lakh machinery spend sits well inside the micro limit |
Which manufacturing units fit ₹50 lakh of machinery?
The table lists seven units from the NPCS reports in the ₹40 lakh to ₹50 lakh machinery bracket, sorted by full project cost. The multiple column shows how far the whole project runs ahead of the machinery bill.
| Business idea | Capacity in the NPCS report | Machinery (₹ lakh) | Full project cost (₹ lakh) | Project cost as multiple of machinery | Main input |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise notebooks | 10,000 notebooks a day | 48 | 86 | 1.8 | Paper |
| Automobile hoses | 4,000 hoses a day | 47 | 185 | 3.9 | Rubber and plastic compounds |
| Detergent powder and cake | 7 tonnes of powder and 5 tonnes of cake a day | 47 | 222 | 4.7 | Detergent chemicals and fillers |
| PET bottle recycling | 8 tonnes of flakes a day | 50 | 233 | 4.7 | Baled used PET bottles |
| Poultry feed | 16 tonnes a day | 43 | 244 | 5.7 | Grains, protein meals and minerals |
| Water based acrylic adhesive | 2,000 kg a day | 47 | 251 | 5.3 | Acrylic raw materials |
| Kraft paper core pipe | 12 tonnes a day | 49 | 303 | 6.2 | Kraft paper |
The notebook unit is the only one under ₹1 crore in total. Kraft paper core pipe sits at the other end: ₹3.03 crore around ₹49 lakh of machinery.
Spice grinding, a common first choice, falls just outside this bracket: the NPCS report puts machinery at ₹60 lakh and the full project at ₹110 lakh. These figures come from report summaries and move with capacity, location and technology, so a lender will want an estimate built for your project.
What would ₹2 lakh a month in profit take?
Searchers often ask how to earn ₹2 lakh a month, and the answer starts with output, not product. That target is ₹24 lakh a year, so divide it by the units you can sell. The table assumes 300 working days and the capacity in the NPCS report, and shows the net profit per unit needed after raw material, wages, power, interest and tax.
| Unit | Yearly output at full capacity | Net profit needed per unit at full capacity | At half capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise notebooks | 30 lakh notebooks | ₹0.80 | ₹1.60 |
| Automobile hoses | 12 lakh hoses | ₹2 | ₹4 |
| Poultry feed | 48 lakh kg | ₹0.50 per kg | ₹1 per kg |
Read the table against your own price list. If buyers will pay only ₹1 above your full cost per notebook, that unit cannot reach ₹2 lakh a month even at full capacity, and a new unit seldom runs flat out from the first month, so test the half-capacity column too. Cash tied up in raw material and unpaid invoices, and the loan instalment, decide whether profit turns into money in hand. Margin percentages for these products vary too much between cities and buyers to quote fairly, so work yours out from your own quotes.
How do you finance a project that costs more than ₹50 lakh?
Three sources come up in almost every plan, and none covers the full project alone. PMEGP terms follow the ministry's release of August 2024. The scheme was approved for continuation till the financial year 2025-26 (Business Standard, May 2022), so check the PMEGP portal for the current cycle.
| Source | What it offers | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| PMEGP | Subsidy of 15% of project cost in urban and 25% in rural areas for the general category; 25% and 35% for special categories such as women, SC/ST, OBC, minorities and ex-servicemen. Own contribution: 10% general, 5% special | The cap includes working capital (up to 40% of project cost under the guidelines), so none of the seven units qualifies as written. A smaller version in a rented building can come inside it |
| Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) | A guarantee that lets member banks lend to micro and small units without collateral; its site showed a ceiling of ₹10 crore in October 2026 | Useful when you have a sound project but no property to pledge. The bank still decides |
| Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (Mudra), Tarun Plus | Loans up to ₹20 lakh since 24 October 2024, for borrowers who took and repaid a Tarun loan (Press Information Bureau, October 2024) | Helps with working capital in a second round, not the first machinery bill |
NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra usually ask for, though every lender applies its own checks.
What should you check before ordering machinery?
- Fix what ₹50 lakh means. Write down whether it is machinery or the whole project.
- Get buyers before machines. Ask three buyers for a written intent or a paid sample order at your planned price.
- Ask the state pollution control board which category your product falls in. Boards sort industries into red, orange, green and white, and white category units only notify the board instead of seeking consent to operate (Maharashtra Pollution Control Board's categorisation page). Detergent and adhesive units should ask before signing a lease.
- Freeze machinery quotes before applying for a loan. A price that moves after sanction can push the project past a scheme cap.
- Check power load and water at the exact plot, not the district. Machines that arrive before the connection sit idle.
Where should you start?
Start with the budget that is true. If ₹50 lakh is every rupee you have, read the manufacturing business under 25 lakhs list; if you can raise ₹1 crore or more, see the ideas for a ₹1 crore budget. Both sit within the wider set of business ideas by investment.
Then shortlist two units from the table, collect three written machinery quotes for each, and test your selling price with two buyers. An NPCS project report for any of these products sets out the machinery list with suppliers, raw material needs, plant layout, cost of production and cash flow, the pack a lender or scheme office asks to see.
Frequently asked questions
Which manufacturing business gives a 50% profit margin?
None that is safe to plan around. Figures like that usually compare the selling price with raw material cost alone and leave out wages, power, interest, tax, wastage and the credit you give buyers. Work out net profit per unit as in the table above, and treat any margin quoted without costs as a sales claim.
What is the cheapest manufacturing business to start?
The one with the lowest total project cost whose output you can sell from the first month. Units with no chemical process or heavy machinery usually cost least, and the manufacturing business under 5 lakh page covers the smallest ones. Compare total project cost, not just the machinery bill.
Which small manufacturing business has the highest success rate?
No verified success rate by product exists, and the figures quoted online carry no source. Units that last tend to have orders in hand before the machines arrive and enough working capital to carry unpaid invoices. Pick the product whose first buyers you can already name.
Is a ₹50 lakh machinery investment a micro or small enterprise?
Micro. Since 1 April 2025 a micro enterprise can have up to ₹2.5 crore invested in plant and machinery or equipment, and the ₹10 crore turnover limit applies as well. Small enterprises go up to ₹25 crore of investment and ₹100 crore of turnover.
