How glue is made depends on its family: collagen boiled out of animal hides and bones, starch cooked from plants, or a synthetic polymer (long chains built from small molecules) dispersed in water or solvent. The white glue Indian carpenters buy under names like Fevicol belongs to the last family. Vinyl acetate is polymerised in water into a milky emulsion, which is then blended with other ingredients, tested and packed. A new factory usually starts by blending emulsion it buys in, and makes its own only once sales justify a reactor. Budget in crore, not lakh: machinery is the smaller part of the cost.

Which glue family should a first-time factory pick?

Water-based emulsion glue is the sensible entry point. Water-borne technology holds the largest share of India's adhesives market, 32.6% of about USD 2.55 billion in 2025, according to IMARC's India adhesives market report.

Glue familyMade fromHow it is madeVerdict for a newcomer
Emulsion (white glue)Vinyl acetate or bought emulsion, waterPolymerise in water, or blend bought emulsion with additivesStart here; blending-only is the lowest-risk version
Starch and dextrinStarch from tubers or seedsStarch is cooked in water; for dextrin it is first broken down, then heatedCheap inputs; used in corrugated board, paper sacks and wallpaper
Animal (hide, bone, gelatin)Collagen-rich materialBoiled to extract collagen, then set into cakesSkip: raw material supply, odour and waste are hard
Solvent rubber (contact)Rubber dissolved in solventRubber is mixed into solvent until it flows; the solvent evaporates after useLater: flammable solvent raises fire-safety demands

Hot melts and reactive glues need more polymer chemistry than a first plant should take on; the epoxy resin guide covers that route.

How is white glue made, step by step?

This is the sequence for a wood glue of the Fevicol class.

  1. Polymerise the emulsion, or buy it. Liquid vinyl acetate joins into long polymer chains in water, with polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid that keeps the droplets from clumping. In one published patent example, the reactor ran at about 80 °C, with monomer and a hydrogen peroxide initiator fed steadily over two hours, then held for another 1.5 hours.
  2. Cool and screen. Cool the milky emulsion and filter out lumps.
  3. Blend to the grade. Mix the emulsion with water and the additives that set viscosity, drying speed, filling and shelf life. The same polymer family goes into paints, so emulsion suppliers often sell to both trades.
  4. Test every batch. Check viscosity, pH and solids, then glue two pieces of wood and pull them apart after drying. A weak batch otherwise shows up at the carpenter's bench weeks later.
  5. Fill and pack. Drums suit plywood and furniture units; bottles and tubes suit retail shelves.

Blend bought emulsion, or make your own?

Blend bought emulsionMake your own emulsion

Start with blending. Add a reactor when you can keep it full, have a chemist who has run emulsion polymerisation, and know your pollution board's view of the process.

Which machines does a glue unit need?

The blending line serves both routes; the reactor and dosing rows apply only if you polymerise.

MachineWhat it does
Blending tank with high-speed stirrerMixes emulsion, water and additives to the grade
Jacketed stainless steel reactor with stirrer and reflux condenserHolds polymerisation temperature; the condenser returns evaporated monomer
Monomer and initiator dosing tanks with metering pumpsFeed the reactor at a steady rate
Filter and storage tanksRemove lumps and hold finished glue
Filling and packing machinesFill drums, bottles and pouches
Lab kit: viscometer, pH meter, moisture balance, bond-test jigClears each batch for release

Is glue just flour and water? Where homemade ends and a factory begins

Flour cooked in water gives a paste that sticks paper, and maida works the same way because it is mostly starch. Industrial starch adhesives of this kind go into corrugated board, paper sacks and wallpaper, as Wikipedia's adhesives article notes. Milk glue, made from skim milk, vinegar and baking soda in an American Chemical Society classroom activity, sets by clumping the milk protein casein.

Both are craft recipes. Neither gives a dealer the batch-to-batch consistency a branded wood glue sells on. Pidilite Industries owns Fevicol and does not publish its formula. What is public is that the Fevicol-type project reports of Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) describe polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) as the base resin, which is why this page treats PVAc emulsion as the product to build.

What does a Fevicol-type glue plant cost?

Two NPCS project reports on Fevicol-type adhesive land close together on total cost.

NPCS reportCapacityPlant and machineryCost of projectReturnBreak-even
Adhesive (Fevicol Type)8 MT/day₹42 lakh₹264 lakh28%62%
Adhesive (Fevicol Type, D2, D3, D4)10 MT/day₹78 lakh₹247 lakh27%53%

Machinery is roughly a sixth to a third of project cost, so budget land, building, working capital and utilities separately. Machinery for similar capacity differs by almost half (₹42 lakh against ₹78 lakh), so get quotations for your own route. The reports state no basis for return and break-even, and figures change with capacity, location and technology; a bank will want a project-specific report.

Which licences and standards apply to a glue unit?

  • Registrations: Udyam registration, GST, and the factory and trade licences your state asks for.
  • Pollution control: consent from your state pollution control board. The Central Pollution Control Board sorts industries into red, orange, green and white by pollution index (list revised in February 2025). Ask your board in writing where your exact process falls before ordering a reactor.
  • Fire safety: vinyl acetate and solvents are flammable, so storage and fire clearance matter more for polymerisation and solvent-based units than for water-based blending.
  • Standards: the Bureau of Indian Standards publishes IS 851 (1978) for synthetic resin adhesives for non-structural wood work and joinery. Test your wood glue against it before you claim compliance, and check with the Bureau whether a licence is compulsory for your product.

What to do before you order machinery

  1. Choose the white glue route and the pack sizes: drums for plywood and furniture units, small packs for dealers.
  2. Collect sample emulsion and prices from two suppliers, and written quotations for the blending tank and packing machine.
  3. Run three trial batches and give the samples to carpenters and a plywood unit for bond tests.
  4. Ask the pollution board and fire department what your process needs, then choose blending or polymerisation.
  5. Browse the how-to-start guides for neighbouring products.

NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994, more than 5,000 across over 40 sectors, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra typically ask for. Its report on a Fevicol-type adhesive plant covers the process, machinery, raw materials, plant layout, and the cost, profitability and break-even workings a lender will want to see.

Frequently asked questions about making glue

What is the strongest type of glue?

No single glue is strongest, because strength depends on the materials joined and the load on the joint. Reactive adhesives such as epoxy and polyurethane, which cure by chemical reaction instead of drying, are the usual starting point for load-bearing joints. White wood glue suits non-structural work.

What is the strongest homemade glue?

Milk casein glue is the best-known homemade recipe beyond flour paste. The American Chemical Society activity tests it against a commercial glue by loading a lap joint with sand. For anything load-bearing, buy a factory adhesive.

Can I mix glue with water?

White PVAc-type glue is water-based and can be thinned with a little water, but each addition lowers the solids and weakens the bond, so test a joint first. Never add water to solvent-based or reactive glues such as contact adhesive or epoxy.

Which chemical is used to make glue?

It depends on the family. White glue uses vinyl acetate with polyvinyl alcohol, animal glue uses collagen, starch glue uses starch, and contact adhesive uses rubber in a solvent. Epoxy uses a resin and a hardener that react when mixed.

How was glue first made?

Ancient tribes processed the bones, hides, skin and sinew of animals to extract collagen, a protein sticky enough to hold things together, according to MadeHow's account of glue history.
