The renewable energy business ideas you can start soonest are services: rooftop solar installation, solar products dealership, panel cleaning and maintenance, and electric vehicle charging at a site you control. They need a trained team, a supplier tie-up and working capital, not a factory. Plants for solar modules, compressed biogas and lithium-ion battery packs sit in a different league: in project report profiles from Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS), the cost of project runs from ₹522 lakh to ₹1,126 lakh, so they suit people who already have buyers and funding.
Demand for green energy is already there. India's installed renewable capacity, large hydro included, was about 299 gigawatts in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's October 2026 update, with solar at about 171 gigawatts (physical progress page). Every plant needs installing, cleaning and repair.
The table sorts 20 ideas by scale and says what to check first. It sits within our wider set of manufacturing business ideas.
Which of the 20 renewable energy businesses fits your budget and skills?
Rows 1 to 9 are solar business ideas, 10 to 12 serve wind and grid projects, 13 to 16 use biogas or biomass, and 17 to 20 cover batteries and electric vehicles. Rows 1 to 5, 14 and 19 can start with a small team and limited stock; rows 8, 10 and 13 need a plant and a confirmed buyer first. Small means a shop or field team, mid a workshop or small plant, and large a full plant that needs land, power and several approvals.
| # | Idea | Scale | Customer or input | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rooftop solar installation for homes and MSMEs | Small | Households, factories, schools | Portal vendor registration and net-metering approval |
| 2 | Solar products dealership | Small | Retail and farm buyers | Modules on the approved list (ALMM) |

| 14 | Small biogas plants for dairies and institutions | Small | Dairies, hostels, canteens | Steady daily waste volume |
| 15 | Biomass briquettes | Mid | Crop residue; boilers, brick kilns | Residue haul distance, buyers |
| 16 | Biomass pellets | Mid | Straw, agro waste; power plants | Buyer's pellet specification |
| 17 | Lithium-ion battery pack assembly | Mid | Cells; inverter, vehicle makers | Cell supply, pack safety testing |
| 18 | Battery storage installation | Mid | Factories, commercial buildings | Pack maker tie-up, grid approval |
| 19 | EV charging stations | Small | Fleets, malls, highways | Site and power connection |
| 20 | Electric two-wheeler assembly | Mid | Parts suppliers, dealers | Parts supply, type approval |
A CNG station often appears beside these ideas, but CNG is natural gas, not a renewable fuel, so the CNG station guide treats it separately. The one link is row 13: city gas companies blend compressed biogas into the gas they sell. On a small budget, start from business ideas under ₹25 lakh.
How much can a renewable energy business earn, and what moves the number?
No source I could open backs a monthly income figure for any of these ideas, so treat ₹2 lakh or ₹10 lakh a month as targets, not forecasts. Income moves with volume sold, payment delays, feedstock or component cost, and idle months.
For the three plant routes, NPCS project report profiles give a projected rate of return and a break-even point, the share of capacity at which the plant stops losing money.
| NPCS project report profile | Capacity | Plant and machinery | Cost of project | Rate of return | Break-even point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar panel manufacturing | 25,000 kW a year | ₹449 lakh | ₹1,126 lakh | 29% | 47% |
| Compressed biogas | 6 tonnes a day (plus 60 tonnes a day of manure) | ₹172 lakh | ₹522 lakh | 27% | 46% |
| Lithium-ion battery pack assembly | 5 packs a day for each of 5 variants | ₹306 lakh | ₹648 lakh | 28% | 62% |
The battery pack route breaks even at 62% of capacity against 46% to 47% for the other two, so a thin order book hurts it more. The profiles state no basis year, so use the rupee figures for scale and get current machinery quotes before approaching a lender.
Which schemes and rules decide whether these ideas work?
Two policies shape what installers can sell, and two create buyers for plants. As of October 2026:
| Policy | What it says | Rows it affects |
|---|---|---|
| PM Surya Ghar | Household subsidy tops out at ₹78,000; SolarQuarter's September 2026 report adds upfront payment and Indian-made modules and cells | 1, 2 |
| ALMM List-II | Net-metering and open-access solar projects commissioned from 1 June 2026 need modules made with listed cells (Energetica) | 1, 2, 8 |
| Compressed biogas blending obligation | City gas companies must blend 1% in 2025-26, 3% in 2026-27, 4% in 2027-28 and 5% from 2028-29 | 13 |
| Biomass co-firing | Thermal power plants must co-fire 5% biomass pellets from 2025-26 (Power Line, November 2025) | 16 |
Re-check each page before signing a contract, because these rules change often.
Service or plant: which route should you take first, and how is it funded?
- No buyer yet: start with installation, cleaning or audits. Revenue begins with the first job, and you learn which brands fail in your region.
- A buyer asking for supply: move to assembly or manufacturing only on a written order or vendor-list slot, because plant costs are paid long before the first sale.
- Feedstock in hand: choose briquettes, pellets or biogas only if you control the residue, dung or food waste, since feedstock supply breaks these projects.
Smaller units can look at loans and subsidies in our note on government schemes for MSMEs. Larger plants need a bank-ready project report, and how to identify the right project comes before that. Confirm loan limits and subsidy rates on the scheme's official portal, since they change.
Your next steps once you have picked a row
- Name the customer before the product: list the first ten households, factories or fleets you could approach and what each pays today for power or fuel.
- For rooftop work, ask your power distribution company how net-metering approval runs and collect two supplier quotes for the same system size. For a plant, get the written order or feedstock agreement first, then price machinery with two or three suppliers.
- Visit one running installer or plant in your region and ask what delayed them in the first six months.
For the solar module, compressed biogas and battery pack routes, an NPCS project report covers capacity, plant and machinery, raw materials, manpower, project cost, working capital and five to ten years of cash flow, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra usually ask for. It supports a loan application but does not guarantee one.
Frequently asked questions about renewable energy business ideas
What is the most profitable renewable energy business?
No single idea wins on every count. In the NPCS profiles above, solar panel manufacturing shows the highest projected return, 29%, but is also the largest project at ₹1,126 lakh. Service ideas need far less capital and earn per job, so profit follows volume and payment terms.
Which renewable energy businesses have the clearest demand in 2026?
Those tied to a rule or scheme: rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar, compressed biogas under the blending obligation and biomass pellets under the co-firing policy. Policy demand still depends on the buyer paying, so confirm who signs the purchase order first.
What types of renewable energy can you build a business on in India?
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy tracks capacity under solar, wind, bio-power, small hydro and large hydro. Geothermal and ocean energy are absent from its capacity table, so few business ideas in India rest on them today. That is why this page covers those five.
Can you start a renewable energy business with a small investment?
Yes, if it is a service. Installation, cleaning, audits, LED supply and charging at one site are rated small in the table because they need people and stock, not machinery. Start there and move to manufacturing once a buyer asks for supply.
