A moringa powder business is a drying and milling business, and most of its profit is settled before the first machine is bought. It turns on the price you pay for leaf, how much of that leaf survives as powder, and whether a buyer has already agreed to take your output. Several kilos of cut leaf go into every kilo of powder, so a rupee or two on the leaf rate moves your margin more than the choice of dryer does.

Leaves are stripped, washed, dried on trays, ground, sieved and packed. Plain powder sold as food needs a registration or licence from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI); capsules, tablets and health claims bring stricter rules, so fix your product form first. A government model report puts a small dryer based line at ₹30 lakh, and the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme can fund part of it.

What does one kilo of moringa powder cost you to make?

Start with the leaf, because that is where the money goes. A 2021 thesis from Parbhani found that about 74% of fresh moringa leaf weight is water, so dried to about 6% moisture, a kilo of powder takes about 3.6 kg of fresh leaflet. A 2022 trial in the Madras Agricultural Journal recovered less: 0.86 tonnes of dry leaf from 4.71 tonnes of fresh leaflet per hectare, or 5.5 kg per kilo. Plan on 3.6 to 5.5 kg.

Farmers sell leaf with the stalks on, and in that trial leaflets were only 63% of cut leaf by weight. So you buy 6 to 9 kg of cut leaf per kilo of powder, and every ₹10 on the leaf rate adds ₹60 to ₹90. These prices are placeholders, not market quotes.

Fuel, labour, packing and tests come on top; get written leaf rates from two or three farmers before quoting a buyer.

Is moringa farming profitable, or should you buy leaf in?

Buy first. Leaf from Moringa oleifera, the drumstick tree, is the real constraint, and a first plant can run on leaf bought from farmers at a written rate with fixed delivery days. Grow your own only if you can irrigate through the dry months and cut on schedule.

In the Madras Agricultural Journal trial the first cut came 90 days after sowing, and closer spacing and a 30 cm cutting height gave the most leaf. ICAR's grassland institute at Jhansi recommended cuts every 40 to 45 days. Both were intensive trial plots, so treat their yields as an upper limit and ask suppliers for the weight harvested per cut.

How to make moringa powder: the steps from leaf to pouch

  1. Harvest and strip. Cut tender leaf on schedule, bring it in the same day and pull the leaflets off the stalks.
  2. Wash. Use clean drinking quality water and drain well.
  3. Blanch only if the buyer asks. The Parbhani thesis used 3 to 5 minutes in hot water or steam.
  4. Dry in thin layers. In the Mysore study a tray drier at 60 °C for 3 hours gave 4.26% moisture, against 6.30% after two days in shade. The same trays run a vegetable dehydration business.
  5. Grind and sieve. Pulverise cooled leaf, sieve it (the Parbhani work used a 0.4 mm mesh) and regrind the oversize.
  6. Pack and test. Use food grade moisture barrier pouches (the Mysore study used 350 gauge HDPE), print batch and date, and test each batch for moisture, microbes, pesticide residue and heavy metals.

Which machines does a moringa powder unit need?

The dryer decides the budget. These costs come from two government model reports built for other capacities: a 250 tonne a year dehydration unit (NIFTEM Thanjavur) and a 500 kg a shift moringa seed powder unit (UP MSME, excluding 18% GST). Use them to size a budget, not to place an order. The same line also makes fruit and vegetable powders.

How much money does the plant need, and can PMFME fund part of it?

NIFTEM Thanjavur's model report titled for moringa leaf powder costs the project at ₹30 lakh: ₹18 lakh machinery, ₹2 lakh each for building and for power and water, ₹4.68 lakh working capital margin, and ₹3.32 lakh in smaller items. Its body describes a fruit and vegetable dehydration unit, so read it as a benchmark for a dryer based line, not a moringa costing. It funds the project with a ₹10 lakh subsidy, ₹6 lakh promoter money and a ₹14 lakh term loan.

That subsidy is the PMFME ceiling: 35% of eligible project cost, up to ₹10 lakh per unit. Outlook Business reported on 24 August 2026 that the scheme was on a temporary extension to 30 September 2026 with a five year continuation proposed, so check the official PMFME portal before relying on it. A leaner start exists: the UP MSME seed powder report lists machinery at ₹11.45 lakh before GST. See other business ideas under ₹25 lakh.

Which FSSAI licence does a moringa powder unit need?

As of October 2026, FSSAI's revised turnover tiers apply from 1 April 2026: registration up to ₹1.5 crore, state licence above that up to ₹50 crore, central licence above ₹50 crore. Confirm your category on FoSCoS, FSSAI's licensing portal, since capacity and product conditions can also apply.

Product form matters as much. FSSAI's FAQs on the nutraceutical regulations say plants that are only cleaned, sorted, dried or powdered are not treated as health supplements. Move to extracts, capsules or tablets and you can fall into that category, where only listed parts of listed plants may be used. No label may claim that a product prevents, treats or cures a disease.

How does a moringa powder business find its first buyers?

Bulk powder goes to herbal, nutrition and food brands that buy against a specification and lab report. Packed powder under your own brand leaves more per kilo but adds packaging, label compliance and marketing. Export needs an Importer Exporter Code and, where the product is covered, a registration certificate from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA); see export business ideas.

A Press Information Bureau release recorded India's first moringa leaf powder export on 29 December 2020: two tonnes of organic certified powder flown to the United States with APEDA support. Tamil Nadu's 2023 to 2024 budget announced an ₹11 crore Moringa Mission; see Tamil Nadu government schemes. See more food processing business ideas.

What should you do before buying the first machine?

Three mistakes are cheap to avoid now: paying for stalk weight, buying leaf with no agreed rate, and shipping a lot that fails the buyer's moisture limit.

  1. Dry a trial lot three ways, compare colour and moisture, and weigh the powder; that is your real recovery and cost per kilo.
  2. Send samples to a handful of buyers and get specification, volume and rate in writing.
  3. Decide plain powder or supplement, which settles your FSSAI route.
  4. Get quotes for your capacity, including dryer, shed, power and water.
  5. Write the project report your bank will read; the detailed project report format guide shows what lenders expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is the moringa powder business profitable?

It can be, but leaf price and recovery set the margin: each kilo of powder takes 6 to 9 kg of cut leaf, so ₹10 on the leaf rate shifts cost by ₹60 to ₹90. Packed powder under your own brand usually leaves more per kilo than loose bulk, because you keep the middleman's share, though you carry packing and marketing cost.

What is the current market price of moringa?

There is no single price, because leaf, dried leaf, powder and pods trade separately and rates change with region and season. Check your nearest mandi for leaf, and ask two or three bulk buyers for powder rates against a stated specification.

Can I start a moringa powder business from home?

At small scale, yes, but you must still register with FSSAI before selling; registration covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore as of October 2026. Keep processing separate from living space, keep batch records, and test each lot before it goes to a buyer.

Is moringa powder made from leaves or seeds?

Both exist, as different products with different machines. Leaf powder, covered here, is dried and milled leaflets. Seed powder is made by hulling and grinding kernels, and the UP MSME report for it notes the process also yields about 20% seed oil.
