  6. Questions about 100 crore business ideas

The best 100 crore business ideas are the ones where ₹100 crore of capital buys a working plant and a buyer is already in sight. On that test, ten sectors stand out in India today: bulk drugs, cold chain, dairy processing, secondary steel, compressed biogas, electric vehicle components, solar manufacturing, solar with battery storage, cement and data centres.

Money does not go equally far in them. In bulk drugs, ₹100 crore is the size of a typical government-backed project. In compressed biogas it is a cluster of about seven plants. In cement it is one small grinding unit, and in data centres it is just 1.4 to 1.7 megawatts. The table below puts a plant-sized number next to every idea.

Is ₹100 crore the investment or the turnover?

Searches for this topic mix two questions. This page answers the first: ₹100 crore going into land, plant and working capital before the first sale. If you meant ₹100 crore of annual turnover, the capital needed is far smaller and the choices change; start with business ideas under 1 crore or the wider business ideas hub.

At this size you may still be a medium enterprise in law. The 2025 Budget raised the medium ceiling to ₹125 crore of investment and ₹500 crore of turnover (Press Information Bureau (PIB), 1 February 2025), so a ₹100 crore project fits inside the band.

What does ₹100 crore actually buy in each of the ten sectors?

Read the second column first. It shows whether ₹100 crore is a whole plant, a cluster or only a fraction.

Bulk drugs (active pharmaceutical ingredients)A full plant. Government-backed projects average ₹110 crore to ₹135 crore (₹5,210.74 crore across 39 to 48 projects). Cold chain and storageOne integrated cold-chain and processing project. The central grant covers at most ₹10 crore of it, which is 10%Grant of 35% (50% in difficult areas), capped at ₹10 crore a project; 395 approved, 291 running (PIB, October 2025)Crop catchment and two or three anchor customers
Dairy processingA multi-product plant (milk, powder, ghee) with chilling centres. Compressed biogasAbout seven plants of 7.2 tonnes a day each, roughly 50 tonnes a day, at ₹14 crore each in the NPCS reportGOBARdhan scheme, ₹23,731 crore to 2035-36: up to ₹2 crore per tonne a day of capacity and ₹2,110 per million British thermal units for ten years; city gas blending 3% in 2026-27, 5% from 2028-29 (PIB, August 2026)Feedstock contracts within haul distance; oil company letter of intent

NPCS figures are the cost of project or total capital investment listed in NPCS project reports for the stated capacity. Costs rarely scale in a straight line, so treat the multiples as a first estimate.

Which of the ten 100 crore business ideas fits your situation?

Three situations cover most readers.

If this is trueStart withWhy
₹100 crore is all the capital you haveBulk drugs, cold chain, dairy, secondary steelHere it funds a whole plant. In cement and data centres it covers a fraction, and the rest must come from partners you do not yet have.
You can sign a buyer before buildingCompressed biogas, data centres, solar with storageRevenue is contracted (oil company, tenant, power purchase), which answers the lender's main worry. Without the contract, skip these.
Your numbers lean on a subsidyModel the project without it firstThe cold chain grant is capped at 10% of a ₹100 crore project, and PM E-DRIVE closes when its funds run out. Treat support as upside until it is sanctioned.

How is a ₹100 crore project funded, and what does the bank ask first?

Most projects at this size run on promoter equity plus a term loan, and the lender's first demand is proof of a buyer. Indian Bank's lending page for compressed biogas, for example, wants a letter of intent from an oil marketing company before it processes the loan, a 25% margin on the term loan and a tenor of 10 to 15 years. Other sectors differ, but the order holds: sales contract first, equipment quotes second.

Land, power connection and pollution-board consent usually set the schedule more than machinery delivery. A bank will also want a detailed project report before it lends. NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994 in the format banks and schemes usually ask for, though the lending decision rests with the bank.

Three things to settle before you commit ₹100 crore

  1. Pick two sectors from the table and name the buyer for each: a lease, an oil company letter, a power purchase agreement or a distributor list. No named buyer, no project.
  2. Check each scheme window on the official source before modelling it. The incentive for bulk drugs, the cold chain grant, the dairy fund, GOBARdhan and PM E-DRIVE all have end dates or fund limits.
  3. Price the plant in its own unit (MW, tonnes a day, litres a day) from equipment quotes; use the arithmetic above only as a sanity check.

An NPCS project report for the sector you choose sets out capacity, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw material costs, project cost, working capital, profitability, break-even and a multi-year cash flow, which is the document a lender will ask to see.

Questions about 100 crore business ideas

What can I do with ₹100 crore in India?

Put it into a plant with a buyer. Bulk drugs, biogas, cold chain, dairy and steel use ₹100 crore as a whole project or a cluster, while data centres and cement take it only as a first phase.

Which business gives ₹1 crore a month?

None can promise it. ₹1 crore a month means ₹12 crore a year, which on ₹100 crore of capital is a 12% return before tax and loan interest. A plant running near full capacity can reach that; a plant waiting for buyers cannot.

Can a ₹100 crore project still be a medium enterprise?

On the definition, yes. Since the 2025 Budget, the medium-enterprise ceiling is ₹125 crore of investment and ₹500 crore of turnover, so ₹100 crore of investment sits inside it. Each scheme sets its own eligibility, so read the guideline before assuming a benefit.

Are real estate townships and hospitals ₹100 crore business ideas?

They are, but they sit outside this list. Returns on townships and hospitals depend on land cost, sales pace or bed occupancy, not plant output, so a plant-unit comparison does not fit, and each needs its own market study before any capital goes in.
