The most profitable business in Ethiopia for a new manufacturer is usually one that replaces a product the country now pays dollars to import, made mostly from local inputs. Edible oil, plastic goods, medicines, flour-based foods and animal feed fit that test. Gold and coffee together brought in US$8.6 billion of Ethiopia's 2025/26 export earnings, according to Capital newspaper, so most new factories will sell at home rather than abroad.

Timing helps and hurts. The birr fell to a record low near 162 to the US dollar in August 2026, which makes imports dearer and gives local makers pricing room. It also raises the cost of any machine, spare part or raw material you must buy abroad. Choose an idea where most inputs are local, price in birr, and keep dollar spending to the plant itself.

Which manufacturing businesses in Ethiopia are actually growing?

Official figures describe a fast-moving factory sector. The Ethiopian News Agency reported in April 2026 that Industry Minister Melaku Alebel put manufacturing growth above 13%, said 754 industries had entered production, and said local goods worth US$4.85 billion replaced imports over nine months. The report named no sectors, and these are government claims.

Exports tell a narrower story. Capital reported in July 2026 that gold and coffee made up 78.2% of the more than US370 million in 2024/25 against a US$1 billion target. The growth a small investor can reach sits in the home market, so start from the import bill.

Which manufacturing ideas fit Ethiopia's import gap?

The table matches ideas to 2023 import lines (UN Comtrade data as compiled by Trading Economics, the latest year we could open). Scale is relative, because we found no sourced investment figure per idea for Ethiopia.

A 2023 draft national import substitution strategy, obtained by The Reporter, listed plastic tubes and fittings, furniture, packing lids and containers, and enriched foods as targets for the first three years, and food and beverage, textiles, leather and construction materials for years four to seven. Fertilizer, at US$1.20 billion the fifth largest import, needs large capital and dollar inputs, so we left it out.

Edible oil has the clearest buyer, but The Reporter reported in November 2023 that about 60 local factories met 13% of demand and were short of seed. Secure oilseed supply before you buy a press. In pharmaceuticals, the World Bank reported in May 2026 that the drug regulator puts local supply above 40% of medicines, against a goal of half of essential demand, with nearly 30 investors in the Kilinto special economic zone.

How does the falling birr change factory economics?

The Addis Standard, citing Bloomberg, reported on 19 August 2026 that the official rate was nearly 162 birr to the dollar and the street rate near 180. The central bank had spent about US$2.2 billion defending the currency this year, and at the 12 August auction banks asked for about four times the dollars offered. Standard Chartered forecasts 163 by year-end; Citigroup forecasts 185 to 195.

Cost your plant at both ends. If the margin only works at 163, one dollar-priced input can erase it. Oilseeds, local grain and plastic waste are birr costs. Resin, machines and spare parts are dollar costs.

Exporters get some relief. Capital reported in June 2026 that exporters in special economic zones may keep full foreign-currency proceeds, and the central bank plans to relax surrender rules for commodity exporters.

What does a foreign investor need to start a factory in Ethiopia?

  • Minimum capital: the Ethiopian Investment Commission sets US100,000 for engineering works, technical consultancy, testing and publishing. Joint ventures need US50,000. At 162 birr, US$200,000 is about 32 million birr. The capital must be registered with the Commission (EIC) within one year. A March 2026 law-firm summary on Mondaq adds that it must come through a licensed Ethiopian bank and that missing the deadline can cost the right to send profits home.
  • Land: per the same summary, all land is state-owned. A foreign national cannot hold a lease personally, but an Ethiopian-registered company can, including a wholly foreign-owned one.
  • Profit transfers: allowed, but the summary warns that dollar shortages can delay them by weeks or months.
  • Tax: a February 2026 investment incentives regulation sets a 15% income tax rate for up to 10 years in priority sectors, including import-substituting manufacturing, agro-processing and pharmaceuticals, and exempts machinery from customs duty and import VAT. It needs US$10 million of total project capital and a performance agreement with EIC. As of March 2026 no lower threshold had been published, so a smaller plant should ask EIC what applies before budgeting for any incentive.

Which low-investment manufacturing ideas suit Ethiopia?

Small plants work where the input is local, the machine can be serviced locally and buyers repeat. Oil pressing, snack foods, animal feed and plastic recycling in the table meet that test. Our low-investment business ideas list covers more, priced in rupees, so convert before comparing. The minimums above apply to foreign investors; the lowest we found is the US$50,000 joint-venture floor in designated sectors, about 8 million birr. We found no sourced guidance on licensing home-based factories in Ethiopia, so we list none.

What to do before you commit to an idea

  1. Pick one import line from the table and check its latest figure with the Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority or UN Comtrade.
  2. List every input and mark it birr or dollar.
  3. Cost the plant at 163 and at 195 birr to the dollar.
  4. Ask EIC which sector list, minimum capital and incentive apply to your project.
  5. Choose a site where land can be leased through an Ethiopian-registered company, such as a special economic zone.
  6. Put the numbers into a detailed project report a lender can read, and browse more business ideas for neighbouring products.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ethiopia's main source of income?

By export earnings, gold and coffee lead. Capital reported nearly US3.1 billion from coffee in 2025/26, together 78.2% of exports. We could not confirm a current share of GDP for manufacturing or for farming, so we do not rank the biggest industry by output.

What is the most imported product in Ethiopia?

Mineral fuels, at US17.05 billion total imports in 2023, per UN Comtrade data compiled by Trading Economics. Machinery (US$1.93 billion), electrical equipment, vehicles and fertilizers followed. For manufacturers, the plastics, fats and oils, and pharmaceutical lines are the realistic targets.

Which manufacturing business is most profitable in Ethiopia?

No source we opened ranks them by profit. Profit depends on how much input you buy in dollars and whether you sell against dearer imports. An oil mill running on local seed fits both conditions better than a plant that imports resin or active ingredients.

Who are the top companies in Ethiopia?

We found no verified ranking. Directory lists put revenue figures against company names without a primary source, so we do not repeat them. For an investor, the useful question is which firms already buy your product, such as bakeries for flour or poultry farms for feed.
