A goat farming business plan that works is built around one number: how many kids you can sell at about 11 months of age. Shed size, feed budget and loan all follow from it. Two government project models put the all-in cost at roughly ₹19,000 to ₹20,000 per breeding doe before land, so a 50-doe farm needs about ₹10 lakh and a 100-doe farm with 5 bucks about ₹19 lakh.
The 100-doe models show a loss of ₹3 lakh to ₹4 lakh in the first year, because the first kids must grow out before they sell. After that they show profits of roughly ₹1 lakh to ₹12 lakh a year, rising and falling from one year to the next. The Centre's National Livestock Mission pays up to 50% of project cost as subsidy, but the ₹50 lakh figure quoted online is the ceiling for a 500-doe unit. A 100-doe unit gets at most ₹10 lakh.
How much does it cost to set up a goat farm? Two official models side by side
Budget about ₹19,000 to ₹20,000 per doe, all in, before land. That is where two government project models land: the MANAGE model for 50 does comes to ₹9.96 lakh, and the APICOL model for 100 does and 5 bucks to ₹19.1 lakh. The shed accounts for most of the gap between them.
| Cost head (₹ lakh) | MANAGE, 50 does + 2-3 bucks | APICOL, 100 does + 5 bucks |
|---|---|---|
| Breeding stock | 5.30 (₹10,000 per doe) | 7.00 (₹6,500 per doe) |
| Sheds, platform, store | 1.84 | 8.93 |
| Site work, fencing | 0.25 | 0.60 |
| Water, power, feeders, chaff cutter | 0.30 | 1.60 |
| Contingency, insurance, fodder, other | 0.38 | 0.69 |
| Fixed capital | 8.07 | 18.82 |
| Working capital | 1.89 | 0.31 |
| Total project cost | 9.96 | 19.14 |
Livestock is two-thirds of MANAGE's capital cost but only 37% of APICOL's, because MANAGE prices a simple shed at ₹120 per square foot while APICOL builds a raised platform shed with a store and a borewell. Cheap breeding stock is a false saving, since the kid crop is the farm's entire income.
Neither model prices land; both assume you own or lease it, and the subsidy below does not cover land purchase or rent.
How much can a 100-goat farm earn? The year-by-year pattern
Plan for a loss in year one and for profits that alternate between strong and weak years. Three government model reports show this, and they differ mostly in the price they assume for a kid.
| Model | Kid price, male / female (₹) | Kid deaths assumed | Net profit, year 1 (₹ lakh) | Net profit, later years (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MANAGE, 50 does | 8,500 / 7,500 | 20% | 6.92 | 6.4-6.6 |
| APICOL, 100 does + 5 bucks | 6,000 / 5,000 | 15% | -3.91 | 2.1-11.8 (average 5.3) |
| NCDC sample, 100 Black Bengal does + 4 bucks | 4,200 / 3,700 | 10% | -3.32 | 0.9-7.0 |
MANAGE's flat ₹6.4 lakh to ₹6.9 lakh from 50 does works out to about ₹13,000 per doe, every year including the first. The report itself says kids are sold the year after birth, yet it shows full kid income in year one, so read it as the best case.
The other two swing because of the kidding interval. At one kidding every 8 months, a doe kids three times in two years, so one year sends two batches of kids to market and the next sends one. That is the likely reason APICOL's profit alternates between ₹9 lakh to ₹12 lakh in strong years and ₹2 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh in weak ones.
Size your loan on the weak year, not the average.
What is the ₹50 lakh goat farming subsidy, and how much will you actually get?
The ₹50 lakh figure is the top rung of a ladder. As of October 2026, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's operational guidelines for the National Livestock Mission give a capital subsidy of up to 50% of project cost, capped by herd size:
| Unit (does + bucks) | Maximum central subsidy (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|
| 100 + 5 | 10 |
| 200 + 10 | 20 |
| 300 + 15 | 30 |
| 400 + 20 | 40 |
| 500 + 25 | 50 |
The smallest unit the scheme supports is 100 does and 5 bucks, so a 50-doe farm like the MANAGE model falls below it. For the APICOL-sized unit, 50% of its ₹18.8 lakh fixed capital is about ₹9.4 lakh, just under the ₹10 lakh cap, if every item qualifies.
The conditions matter as much as the amount:
- Apply on the scheme's online portal (nlm.udyamimitra.in). The state implementing agency and a bank loan sanction come first.
- You need your own or leased land, margin money of at least 10% of project cost, and training or experience in the field.
- Working capital, land purchase and lease rent are not subsidised.
- The subsidy comes in two instalments through SIDBI, the second only after the unit is complete and running. It can be recalled if the unit shuts within three years of starting production.
Banks will want a project report with cost and income tables like these; see the detailed project report format. Confirm with your state animal husbandry department that applications are open.
Which goat breed is more profitable for a meat-led farm?
The profitable breed is the one your local buyers pay most for and your fodder can carry. The models show the spread: MANAGE prices Osmanabadi does at ₹10,000 and male kids at ₹8,500, while NCDC's Black Bengal model buys does at ₹4,000 and sells male kids at ₹4,200.
An ICAR review in the Indian Journal of Animal Sciences rates Black Bengal, Barbari and Osmanabadi highly for meat, and Jamunapari and Beetal for milk. It also reports that exotic crossbreeding was stopped because higher-grade crosses had poor reproduction and high kid deaths, and that true-to-breed bucks are scarce. Buy bucks where you can see their dam, and choose from the scheme's breed list if you want the subsidy.
How much land do 50 goats need?
About 1 to 2 acres if you grow your own fodder, and only about 1,500 square feet of that is shed. MANAGE builds 1,530 square feet for 50 does, at 15 square feet per adult and 4 per kid. APICOL uses 10 square feet per doe, 20 per buck and 4 per kid, with 1 acre of fodder for 105 adults. NABARD's model says one irrigated acre carries about 25 goats under intensive rearing, which would mean 2 acres for 50.
What goes wrong in the first year of a goat farm?
- Kid deaths: the models assume 10% to 20%, and each lost kid is ₹3,700 to ₹8,500 of income gone. Vaccinate against PPR, the disease the national control programme targets, through your state animal husbandry department.
- A cash gap: APICOL's year-one income is ₹1.97 lakh against ₹2.99 lakh of cost. Keep feed and labour money aside until the first batch sells.
- Feed: concentrate is nearly half of MANAGE's year-one spending (₹1.62 lakh of ₹3.40 lakh), so price it before you size the herd. The animal feed manufacturing guide covers mixing your own.
What should your goat farming business plan settle before you buy the first doe?
- Fix the unit size. Choose 100 does and 5 bucks or more if you want the central subsidy.
- Ask two local traders what they pay for a 10 to 12 month male kid, then rebuild the income table at that price and at the weak-year level.
- Ask your state animal husbandry department for the breed list, training and whether applications are open.
- Write the project report, then approach the bank.

Frequently asked questions
What are good business ideas within goat farming?
Kid rearing for meat is the base model in all three reports. Add-ons are manure, which MANAGE counts at ₹50,000 a year, vermicompost made from it, and breeding-stock sales once you hold good bucks. Goat milk needs its own buyers and plan.
How long before a goat farm starts earning?
Expect the first kid sales in the second year. The models sell kids at about 11 months (8 to 9 in the NCDC sample), and the 100-doe models show a first-year loss.
Can a farm of 20 or 50 goats get the central subsidy?
Not under this scheme, whose smallest unit is 100 does and 5 bucks. Ask your state animal husbandry department about state schemes, which vary.
How many bucks do I need?
About 1 for every 20 does. The subsidy units use 5 bucks per 100 does, and APICOL does the same.
Can I start on leased land?
Yes. The central guidelines accept own or leased land and state no minimum lease length in the part we read. Check what your bank requires.
