Donkey farming in India is a small, slow, milk-led business, and the first question is not how to start but who will buy your milk. A jenny (female donkey) gives less than a litre a day for about six months after foaling, so even a good herd sells little. The ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 a litre in headlines comes from a one-off sale reported in 2020 and from door-to-door retail claims. Breeders supplying a processor in Gujarat quoted about ₹200 a litre in late 2025.
The money that is real comes from the government: 50% of the project cost, up to ₹50 lakh, for a breeding farm of at least 50 female and 5 male indigenous donkeys. It arrives through a bank loan and a three-year commitment, and it only works if you can find that many animals of a recognised local breed. Sign a written buyer and price first. Buy animals second.
How much does donkey milk actually sell for in India?
Quoted prices run from ₹125 to ₹7,000 a litre, and the gap comes down to who is selling to whom.
| Price per litre | Where and when | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| ₹125 | Aadvik Foods buying from Gujarat breeders, 2020 (People's Archive of Rural India) | A processor's price for small lots |
| ₹200 | Halari breeder, Gujarat, December 2025 (Mongabay India) | Closest to a current supplier price |
| ₹3,500 | Patan (Gujarat) farmer, 2024 (The Better India) | His own claim, tied to powder for overseas buyers |
| ₹6,667 | Door-to-door, Hyderabad, October 2025 (The Dairy News) | A retail pitch; the report notes no scientific evidence for the health claims |
| ₹7,000 | One litre, Jamnagar, September 2020 (People's Archive of Rural India) | One sale, not a market |
Donkey milk has a short shelf life and little local demand. The Patan farmer discarded 3,000 litres in his first year and spent about a year finding companies to dry it into powder. Even Donkey Palace in Tamil Nadu, which the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) calls India's largest donkey farm, runs about 5,000 donkeys through more than 75 franchise farms and sells to a couple of cosmetic manufacturers. The buyer is industrial, so the buyer or processor must exist before the herd does.
Can a donkey farm earn ₹1 lakh a month?
Only at the right price, and only while jennies are in milk. The table divides ₹1 lakh of gross sales by price, assuming each jenny gives 1 litre a day for 30 days, the top of the reported range. Feed, wages, vet care and loan interest come out of that gross.
| Price per litre | Litres needed in a month | Jennies milking at 1 litre a day |
|---|---|---|
| ₹125 | 800 | 27 |
| ₹200 | 500 | 17 |
| ₹3,500 | 29 | 1 |
Pregnancy lasts about 12 months and milk flows for roughly six months after foaling, so at best about half the herd is milking at a time.
The ₹3,500 row explains the hype, and the Patan farmer shows its cost: a ₹37 lakh loan in 2022 for 20 donkeys and a shed, first-year losses of ₹40 lakh by his own account, and a claimed ₹3 lakh a month once powder orders arrived.
Animals add income: Halari males fetched ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 at a recent fair (Mongabay India). ICAR also lists dung as fertiliser and distilled urine for Siddha and pharma uses, with no published price. The dung can go into vermicompost.
What does the National Livestock Mission pay for a donkey farm?
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) funds donkey breeding units under the National Livestock Mission (NLM). The terms below come from the January 2025 guidelines, checked as of October 2026.
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Subsidy | One-time 50% of project cost, capped at ₹50 lakh (a ₹1 crore project earns the full cap) |
| Herd | At least 50 female and 5 male donkeys, indigenous breeds only |
| Applicants | Individuals, farmer groups and Section 8 companies, with own or leased land and relevant training |
| Your share | At least 10% as margin money; the rest by bank loan, or a three-year bank guarantee if self-financed |
| Covered | Housing, breeding animals, insurance, fodder land preparation, equipment |
| Not covered | Working capital, land purchase, rent, personal vehicles |
| Lock-in | Run the farm for three years; the subsidy can be recalled if it is abandoned |
| Apply | NLM portal (nlm.udyamimitra.in); state agency, bank, state committee and DAHD approve in turn |
Two catches. Working capital is excluded, so first-year feed and wages are yours to fund. And indigenous animals are scarce: the 20th Livestock Census counted about 0.12 million donkeys in 2019, 62% fewer than in 2012 (Down To Earth), and Halari numbers were put at 469 in 2022 (Mongabay India). Ask the state agency in writing which breeds and sources it accepts before paying any advance.
The Press Information Bureau's December 2025 progress table shows 3,169 of 3,843 approved projects were sheep and goat units and lists no donkey line. If the subsidy is your main reason, a goat farming plan is the better-tried route.
Which indigenous donkey breed is realistic to start with?
Breed decides which animals the state agency accepts and who buys your stock later.
| Breed | Home | What the record shows |
|---|---|---|
| Halari | Saurashtra, Gujarat | Recognised by ICAR's National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources in 2018; white pack animal; scarce |
| Spiti | Himachal Pradesh | First donkey breed recognised in India |
| Poitu | Tamil Nadu | ICAR's National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE) supplied elite Poitu donkeys to Donkey Palace; confirm the state agency counts it as indigenous |
How to start a donkey farm in India, step by step
- Get a buyer in writing. A letter of intent with quantity and price from a cosmetics maker, powder processor or exporter gives the bank more than a headline price.
- Train first. The scheme asks for training or experience. NRCE has run donkey farming programmes, including one in Bikaner in August 2022.
- Fix land and shelter. Own or leased land is required; the shed and fodder land can sit inside the project cost.
- Buy stock with papers: a recent glanders test and a health card.
- Feed fibre. The Donkey Sanctuary advises mostly straw, about 1.5% of body weight in dry feed a day, roughly 2 kg for an average 138 kg Halari jenny, and warns that grain and rich pasture bring obesity and laminitis. Have a vet set rations for jennies in milk.
- Sort out milk handling. A March 2026 advisory from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requires independent milk producers and vendors to hold registration or a licence. Contract processors made the powder in the reported cases, so budget processing fees rather than a dryer.
- Apply through the NLM portal with a bank-appraised project report.
Which disease rules can shut a donkey farm?
Glanders is a notifiable disease in equines, donkeys included. With no approved vaccine or treatment, the national action plan is to test, track and destroy, with compensation for culled animals. In practice, animals entering another state need a negative test within 30 days, fairs ask the same, and newcomers should stay apart for three weeks before joining the herd.
What to settle before you commit to 55 donkeys
- Start small on your own money if no buyer has named a price, because the subsidy locks you in for three years.
- Redo the income table with the price in your offer letter and your own jenny count.
- Ask the state agency which breeds it accepts and what the bank needs for appraisal.
- Compare the plan with cow dairy farming, where buyers are established, or browse other agriculture business ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Can donkeys live 50 years?
Some can: a UK donkey-welfare page says up to 50 years. A breeder's useful span is shorter, since a jenny must foal to give milk and pregnancy lasts about 12 months. Count foals and lactations per jenny, not her age.
Who buys donkey milk in India?
Few buyers, all industrial: cosmetic makers supplied by Donkey Palace, Aadvik Foods in Gujarat (which buys from breeders, exports powder and makes soap), and overseas pharma and cosmetics firms reached through powder. We found no open market, so get an offtake price in writing.
Can a farm of 10 donkeys get the NLM subsidy?
No. The donkey unit under the scheme is at least 50 female and 5 male indigenous donkeys, so a 10-donkey farm falls outside it. You would fund that farm yourself or through an ordinary loan, and it would still need a buyer.
Do I need a licence to sell donkey milk?
Expect to need FSSAI registration or a licence. The advisory reported in March 2026 covers independent milk producers and vendors but does not say how donkey milk is treated. Ask your state food safety office which category fits, and whether powder or cosmetic supply changes it.
How long before a donkey farm makes money?
No reliable average is published. A jenny gives milk only after foaling, and pregnancy lasts about 12 months, so check whether the jennies you buy are already in foal. The Patan farmer reported first-year losses of ₹40 lakh. Plan loan repayments around no income in year one.
