A cloud kitchen from home needs four things in place before the first order: an FSSAI registration, permission to cook commercially where you live, a short menu that survives a delivery ride, and prices worked out after the platform takes its cut. FSSAI is the national food regulator, and registration is the lightest of its three categories. Since 1 April 2026 a kitchen with yearly sales up to ₹1.5 crore stays in that category. The old ceiling was ₹12 lakh, a figure many guides still repeat.

The sensible order is to check the building, register, cook test batches on the stove and mixer you already own, cost every dish, and only then list on Zomato, Swiggy or your own WhatsApp number. Spend on equipment last. Machines bought before you know which five dishes sell are the easiest money to waste.

What approvals do you need to start a cloud kitchen from home?

Cooking at home for paying customers is allowed once the business is registered. The approvals around that registration vary by city; here they are in the order you will meet them.

ApprovalWhen you need itWhat decides itWhere it is done
FSSAI registrationBefore the first saleYearly turnover; basic registration covers up to ₹1.5 croreFoSCoS, the FSSAI portal
Society or landlord permissionBefore you buy anythingSome society bye-laws and rental agreements bar commercial activitySociety office or landlord, in writing
Municipal licenceDepends on the cityLocal health or trade licence rulesYour municipal health office
GST registrationWhen total yearly sales cross ₹20 lakh for services (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura), or when a platform insistsTurnover including platform ordersGST portal
Platform onboardingAfter the four abovePAN, FSSAI certificate, bank details, GST details where askedZomato and Swiggy partner pages

Since 1 January 2022 the platform itself pays GST on restaurant orders placed through it, and the GST Council's registration flyer says suppliers selling services through e-commerce operators need not register compulsorily below the limit. Even so, Swiggy's own onboarding guide lists a GST certificate and a shop licence, while Zomato's partner page says GST number "if applicable". Ask the platform what it wants for your city before paying anyone to file.

FSSAI's hygiene schedule for small registered food businesses asks for drinking-quality water, pest-proof doors and windows, and food handlers who stay off work when infectious. Keep family cooking and delivery cooking in separate time slots with separate storage.

Selling from home on Zomato or Swiggy is possible in principle once you are registered. An FSSAI advisory of December 2024 tells food e-commerce platforms they cannot list a seller without a valid licence or registration. Whether a platform accepts a residential address in your locality is its own decision, so ask at sign-up.

What does it cost to start a cloud kitchen at home?

No dependable public figure exists for a home setup, because the total depends on what your kitchen already owns, and quoted totals usually come from equipment sellers. The number that matters is your own gap.

Opening budget = equipment gap + packaging for the first 100 orders + two weeks of ingredients + registration + a reserve for refunded orders. The 100 orders and two weeks are planning assumptions.

Cost headWhat it coversWhat moves it
Cooking gapSecond burner, heavy pans, mixerWhat you already own
Cold storageFridge or freezer space for prepped gravies and doughDairy and meat need more
PackagingContainers, lids, bags, labelsGravy-heavy dishes need costlier leak-proof packs
Ingredients and wastageFirst two weeks of stockOrder volume; how many dishes share ingredients
Cash gapMoney spent before platform payouts arrivePayout cycle, to confirm at sign-up

If cash is tight, compare other low investment business ideas; loans for small food units are covered under MSME schemes and loans.

How do you start a cloud kitchen from home, step by step?

  1. Fix one meal occasion, such as weekday office lunch, and build five to eight dishes around it.
  2. Get permission from your housing society or landlord in writing, or confirm none is needed.
  3. File the basic FSSAI registration on FoSCoS.
  4. Mark out a kitchen corner and buy only the equipment gap.
  5. Cost each dish, then cook 20 test orders for neighbours and note timings and complaints.
  6. Photograph dishes as packed and apply to one platform with documents ready.
  7. Handle the first 50 orders yourself, read every review, then consider a second platform.

Which equipment does a home cloud kitchen really need?

This table separates what the first month needs from what can wait.

EquipmentWhat it doesWhen to buy
Two-burner LPG hob or induction plateLets dishes overlap at peak hour without using the family stoveNow
Heavy pans and pressure or rice cookerEven heat for gravies; dal and rice in volumeNow
Mixer grinderMasala pastes and battersUse your existing one first
Fridge or deep freezerHolds prepped gravies, dough, marinadesNow
Chimney or exhaust fanRemoves smoke and greaseNow
Digital scaleKeeps portions, and cost per dish, steadyNow
Steel table and racksKeeps food and packaging off the floorNow
Tray sealerLeak-proof, tamper-evident packsAfter the first month

Which dishes hold up on a delivery ride?

Pack a dish, close the lid, leave it for 40 minutes, then eat it. Whatever turns soggy, split or cold is a delivery problem. Dal, rajma, biryani and rice bowls usually pass; parathas pass when the gravy is packed separately. Fried snacks and fresh dosas fail unless packed with a vent and eaten within minutes.

If baking is your strength, the guide on starting a bakery business covers the production side. For packaged meals customers heat at home, see the frozen food manufacturing guide.

Should the first orders come from Zomato, Swiggy or WhatsApp?

Begin with direct WhatsApp orders from neighbours and office contacts for the first 20 to 30 orders. They carry no commission and give honest feedback before ratings go public. Then list on one platform. Swiggy's guide adds a cancelled cheque, a copy of the menu and a takeout bill to PAN and the FSSAI certificate. Add the second platform only when orders on the first arrive faster than you can pack them.

How much of a ₹300 order do you actually keep?

Restaurant India's June 2026 feature puts Zomato's commission at around 25 percent, varying with location, category and order volume, and says GST is also charged on that commission. The table runs the arithmetic on an assumed ₹300 order. Replace every figure with yours.

LineWorking₹ per order
Order value (assumed)Menu price on the app300
Platform commission (assumed 25%)300 x 25%75
Food cost (assumed)Ingredients per portion100
Packaging (assumed)Container, lid, bag20
Fuel and power (assumed)Gas and electricity per portion10
Left before labour, discounts, ads and wastage300 - 75 - 100 - 20 - 1095

If ₹95 does not pay for your time at the pace you can cook, the fix is a smaller menu or a higher price, not more orders.

What to do this week

  • Ask your society or landlord for written permission.
  • File the basic FSSAI registration on FoSCoS.
  • Cost your five dishes with the table above and drop any that leave too little.
  • Cook 20 test orders in the packaging you plan to use.
  • Apply to one platform with PAN, FSSAI certificate and bank details ready.

When the home kitchen outgrows itself, raising startup funding and the wider set of food business ideas are the next reads.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start a cloud kitchen without a licence?

No. Selling food to the public needs at least an FSSAI registration, and Zomato and Swiggy will not list a kitchen without one. Cooking for family without payment is different, but once you take orders from strangers you are a food business.

Is a cloud kitchen the same as a ghost kitchen?

In everyday use, yes: cloud, ghost and dark kitchen all mean a kitchen that cooks only for delivery. One difference matters. Some cloud kitchens are shared commercial spaces where several brands rent a station, while a home cloud kitchen is one brand cooking in the owner's own premises.

Can I start a cloud kitchen with no money?

Not with literally nothing, because registration, packaging and ingredients always cost something. You can shrink the opening spend: one dish, cookware you already own, advance payment on pre-orders from neighbours, and no machine purchases until orders prove demand.

Do I need to renew an FSSAI registration every year?

FSSAI's March 2026 order refers to an amendment giving registrations and licences perpetual validity, subject to risk-based inspections. Check the validity printed on your own certificate and in FoSCoS, because a fixed renewal date may no longer apply.
