A chick hatchery turns fertile eggs into day-old chicks and sells them to broiler and layer farmers. A hatchery business plan therefore rests on two decisions: where the hatching eggs come from, and who buys the chicks every week. You can buy eggs from a breeder farm you trust and keep the plan light, or keep your own parent birds and run a breeder farm as well.
Public figures put a small unit at about ₹6.6 lakh (a state-scheme budget) and a full rural unit with parent birds, hatchery and brooder house at ₹50 lakh or more. Incubation takes 21 days, so you pay for eggs, power and labour for three weeks before the first chick is sold. Profit depends on how many eggs turn into saleable chicks and on a chick price that follows broiler and feed markets. The approvals you chase are mostly state-level, through the animal husbandry office and the pollution control board.
Which hatchery model should your plan start with?
Three set-ups cover most Indian egg hatchery businesses.
| Model | What you run | Capital anchor from public sources | Biggest risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Egg-buying hatchery | Buy hatching eggs, incubate, sell chicks | ₹6.60 lakh for a 7,500-egg setter and 2,500-egg hatcher unit (Odisha small-scale hatchery scheme, 2021-22) | Health of bought eggs |
| Hatchery with own parent stock | Keep breeders, collect eggs, hatch them | No public figure found; adds breeder housing and feed | Breeder disease, feed cost |
| Rural unit under the National Livestock Mission | Parent farm of 1,000+ parent layers, rural hatchery, brooder-cum-mother unit | 50% subsidy capped at ₹25 lakh, so projects of ₹50 lakh and above (NLM guidelines, January 2025) | Subsidy conditions, rural chick market |
Start with the egg-buying model unless you already run a breeder flock. Parent stock adds feed bills, fertility checks and disease control to a 21-day cycle that is demanding enough. The subsidy model is built for rural poultry breeding, so a broiler-chick plan should not assume it applies. To compare other livestock start-ups, see our how-to-start business guides.
How much does it cost to set up a chick hatchery?
The only line-item hatchery budget I found from a government source is the small unit in the same Odisha scheme. Prices have moved since 2021-22, so treat it as a checklist, not a quote.
| Item | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|
| Hatchery room, 20 ft by 15 ft with veranda | 1,60,000 |
| Incubator (7,500 eggs) and hatcher (2,500 eggs) | 2,69,000 |
| 3 kW generator | 42,000 |
| Water tank, pump, washing tank, wiring, installation, small items | 54,000 |
| First batch: 7,500 hatching eggs, diesel, sanitation | 1,35,000 |
| Total | 6,60,000 |
Machines are about two-fifths of the total, and one batch of hatching eggs, bought at ₹17 each, is close to a fifth. Cost climbs with setter capacity, generator size and, if you keep breeders, parent-stock sheds. The national subsidy does not cover land purchase or working capital.
Is the hatchery business profitable?
It can be, but the margin narrows when chick prices fall while feed gets dearer, and 2026 has shown that. Pashu Sandesh reported on 10 June 2026 that poultry and breeder associations cut day-old chick production by nearly 25% after soybean meal rose more than 40% in a month. Feed is about 65-70% of a broiler farmer's production cost, so chick demand follows animal feed prices.
Your own margin comes down to four numbers: the price you pay per hatching egg, the share of eggs set that become saleable chicks, how full you keep the setter, and the chick price you get. The Odisha scheme budgets ₹17 per hatching egg, transport included. Divide your egg price by your real hatch share and you have the egg cost per chick, before power, labour, vaccines and boxes. Test the plan at a chick price well below today's.
Farm profit questions (1,000 or 10,000 birds) are about growing birds, and that arithmetic sits in our poultry farming guide.
Which approvals does a chick hatchery need in India?
The central scheme guidelines I reviewed name no separate hatchery licence, so your list depends on your state and site.
| Where to go | What to settle |
|---|---|
| District animal husbandry office | Whether your state asks hatcheries to register, and which subsidy you can use |
| State Pollution Control Board | Whether a hatchery needs consent. In 2020 the National Green Tribunal said poultry farms with more than 5,000 birds need it and asked the Central Pollution Control Board to revisit its green category, so confirm the current rule |
| Electricity company | A connection sized for setter, hatcher and cooling, with the generator as backup |
| Your bank | Loan sanction; the national scheme also asks for 10% margin money |
What happens inside a hatchery between egg and chick?
- Collect hatching eggs from a healthy parent flock and discard cracked or misshapen ones.
- Switch on the setter and hatcher at least 24 hours before eggs go in.
- Set the eggs. A forced-draft setter runs at 37.2 to 37.8°C with about 60% humidity for 18 days, and automatic turners should turn eggs at least eight times a day (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) hatching guide).
- Candle the eggs to remove infertile ones and dead embryos.
- After day 18, move eggs to the hatcher: about 36.7°C, 70-80% humidity, no turning.
- At day 21, take out the chicks, sort and vaccinate. TNAU's schedule gives Marek's disease vaccine on day one and Ranikhet (Newcastle) vaccine within the first seven days.
- Pack in ventilated boxes and dispatch.
Which machines does a hatchery plant need?
| Machine | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Setter | Holds eggs for 18 days with controlled heat, humidity and turning | Automatic turning; capacity matched to weekly eggs |
| Hatcher | Takes eggs for the last 3 days without turning | A separate machine; the Odisha scheme pairs a 7,500-egg setter with a 2,500-egg hatcher |
| Egg tester | Shows infertile eggs and dead embryos | Bright, even light |
| Standby generator | Holds temperature through power cuts | Sized for the full hatchery load |
| Washing tank | Cleans trays and machines after each hatch | Drainage away from the hatchery |
What can go wrong in a hatchery?
- Disease from the source flock. The Poultry Disease Action Plan 2024 of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (advisory, not legally binding) advises taking eggs and chicks only from a Mycoplasma-free source.
- Dependence on a few buyers. Two or three large buyers leave you with nowhere to sell when one cuts orders, as the June 2026 production cut showed. Spread buyers across districts.
Can a subsidy or bank loan fund a hatchery?
The national route is the rural poultry component of the National Livestock Mission: a one-time 50% capital subsidy, capped at ₹25 lakh per unit, for a parent farm, rural hatchery and brooder-cum-mother unit. Units need at least 1,000 parent layers, and you must run the project for three years after completion. Land purchase, working capital and rent are excluded. Individuals, self-help groups, producer organisations and Section 8 companies can apply. Check that the scheme is open, since the guidelines date from January 2025.
Odisha's 2021-22 scheme paid a 40% back-ended subsidy on the ₹6.60 lakh unit. The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund offers a 3% interest subvention, but its published FAQ lists dairy, meat processing and feed plants, not hatcheries, so ask your bank first. Other options sit in our government schemes hub.
What should you do before buying an incubator?
- Pick the model. Choose egg-buying unless you already hold breeders.
- Visit the district animal husbandry office and the pollution control board with a site plan, and ask what each needs in writing.
- Ask two or three breeder farms for hatching-egg prices and written test results for Mycoplasma and Pullorum disease.
- Get quotes from two machine makers, and ask what they do when a controller fails.
- Ask five nearby farms what chick price, delivery timing and vaccination they expect, and size the first setter from their weekly orders, not the machine's maximum.
- Apply for any subsidy before construction, because both schemes pay in instalments tied to building milestones.

Frequently asked questions about starting a chick hatchery
How long does a hatchery take to produce chicks?
Chicken eggs need about 21 days: 18 in the setter and three in the hatcher, per TNAU. Set eggs every week so chicks are ready every week.
Can I run a hatchery without keeping parent birds?
Yes. Buying hatching eggs is the lighter model, and the Odisha scheme is built that way. You depend on the seller's flock health, so ask for written test results from a Mycoplasma-free source.
How many male birds do I need for 1,000 hens?
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's model project for a rural poultry breeding unit uses 1,000 females and 100 males, one male to ten females. Ask your breeder whether your bird type needs a different ratio.
Do I need a separate hatcher as well as a setter?
For a commercial unit, yes. TNAU notes hatchability improves with a separate hatcher, because turning stops after day 18 and humidity must rise. The Odisha scheme budgets both machines.
