What is a wire nail project report?

A wire nail project report is a feasibility study and loan document for a plant that converts mild steel wire rod into countersunk head nails. It sets out capacity, the drawing and nail-forming process, machinery, wire rod cost, project cost, means of finance and five years of projections with DSCR and break-even.

Promoters use it to decide plant size and raise a term loan; bank credit teams use it to judge whether the plant can carry the debt.

Also known as: wire nail manufacturing project report, project report on wire nail, wire nail business plan, DPR for wire nail plant.

What the wire nail project report shows on plant economics

Our sample report sizes the plant at 17 MT per day, or 5,610 MT a year over 330 working days. Output starts at 60% of capacity and rises to 80% by Year 5, with nails sold ex-factory at ₹71,700 per MT before GST.

DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is the cash available to repay the loan divided by the instalments due. In the sample its lowest value is 1.89, in Year 2, when full instalments begin.

Wire nail manufacturing process, from rod to packed nails

A plant that starts from wire rod runs seven stages. Every stage loses a little weight as scale, scrap ends or rejects, so saleable nails are always less than rod bought.

  1. Receiving and checking rod

Coils of mild steel wire rod are checked for the BIS mark, size and mill test certificate before they go to the drawing bay.

  2. Descaling

Mill scale is cracked off by bending the rod over rollers or by shot blasting; acid pickling also works but adds effluent to treat.

  3. Wire drawing

The rod is pulled through a series of tungsten carbide dies with dry soap lubricant, losing diameter at each block until it reaches nail gauge.

  4. Nail forming

The nail machine straightens the wire, grips it, punches the head, then cuts and points the shank in one cycle.

  5. Polishing

Nails tumble in a rotating drum with sawdust, which soaks up drawing oil and leaves the bright finish IS 723 asks for.

  6. Testing

Samples from each day's lot are measured with a vernier and micrometer and bent double cold to check they do not crack.

  7. Packing

Nails are weighed into cardboard boxes of 0.5 kg or 2.5 kg, or 50 kg gunny bags, by length, as the standard sets out.

Should a wire nail plant draw its own wire or buy it?

This is the first technical choice in a wire nail business plan, and it changes the machinery list, power load and margin. Our sample report takes the drawing route.

SuitsA first unit testing its marketA plant selling steady volumes to dealers

A common path: start with drawn wire and two or three nail machines, then add drawing once dealer orders are steady enough to keep the drawing line busy.

Raw materials: wire rod sets the cost

IS 723:2023 specifies mild steel wire to IS 280 with a tensile strength of at least 550 MPa. In our sample report raw materials take 60.5% of sales, and MS wire rod is 92% of that bill. Packing is the rest.

Rod prices follow the steel market, so the sample holds 30 days of stock and buys on 30 days' credit. A lender will ask how a rise in rod price changes profit.

Manpower and power for a 17 MT per day plant

The sample plant employs 60 people, of whom 51 are skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled workers on the shop floor. Power and fuel cost ₹245.24 lakh in Year 3, or 8.7% of sales, because the drawing blocks and nail machines run on electric motors through every shift.

Standards and approvals for a wire nail unit

The product standard and the rules on input steel matter more here than for most small metal products. Approvals also differ by state.

Product standardIS 723:2023 covers countersunk head nails from 1.25 mm to 10 mm shank and 15 mm to 250 mm long, designated like "Nail 4 x 100 IS 723"
BIS certificationLicence to use the Standard Mark under BIS Scheme-I; the factory needs its own lab for dimension and bend tests
Input steelMS wire rod (IS 7887) and drawn wire (IS 280) are on the steel Quality Control Order list, so buy BIS-marked material
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate; Odisha, for example, lists wire drawing, wire netting and wire nail units as Orange category
RegistrationsUdyam (MSME) and GST registration; factory licence where the workforce threshold applies
PowerHT or LT industrial connection sanctioned for the drawing and nail machine load

Checked October 2026. Categories and orders change, so confirm with BIS and your state pollution control board.

Who buys wire nails and how they buy

Demand comes from house building, shuttering and formwork, furniture, and wooden crates and pallets for industrial packing. Dealers order a spread of sizes, so a plant needs enough machines to cover the common lengths without long changeovers.

Buyers expect credit. The sample gives dealers 45 days, which makes trade receivables its largest current asset: ₹297.54 lakh in Year 1, against a working capital need of ₹396.09 lakh.

  • Hardware and building-material dealers
  • Construction and shuttering contractors
  • Crate, pallet and packing case makers
  • Furniture and carpentry workshops
  • Roofing and fencing contractors
  • Government and PSU buyers through tenders

Freight decides the map: a tonne of nails is worth little for its weight, so a plant close to its dealers can price below a larger plant shipping from another state.

Mistakes that weaken a wire nail project report

  • Treating rod bought as nails sold

Scale, scrap ends and rejects all reduce saleable output. A report that sells every tonne of rod overstates revenue.

  • Pricing at one average size

Small nails take more machine time per tonne than large ones. The product mix should drive both capacity and price.

  • Leaving out tooling

Carbide drawing dies, punches and cutters are recurring costs. Missing them flatters margins in every year.

  • Ignoring the input steel rules

Budgeting on cheap non-BIS rod can fail an inspection and stop production. Price the rod you are allowed to buy.

  • Sizing power for nail machines only

A drawing line needs a much larger sanctioned load. An under-sized connection delays start-up and the first instalments.

Wire Nail project report: frequently asked questions

What is the wire nail manufacturing plant cost in India?

It depends mainly on whether you draw your own wire. A unit buying drawn wire and running a few nail machines needs an indicative ₹50–150 lakh with a rented or small shed. A plant drawing wire from rod costs far more. Our sample report models a 17 MT per day plant at ₹1,003 lakh, of which plant and machinery is ₹473 lakh.

Which wire is used to make wire nails?

IS 723:2023 calls for mild steel wire to IS 280 with a minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa. Plants that draw their own wire start from mild steel wire rod, usually 5.5 mm and up, bought in coils. In our sample report wire rod is 92% of raw material cost, so its price moves profit more than any other input.

Which machines are needed for a wire nail plant?

A descaler for the rod, a multi-block wire drawing machine with carbide dies, automatic nail making machines that head, cut and point the wire, a polishing drum and weighing and packing equipment. A plant also keeps spare punches, cutters and grip dies. In our sample report the nail machines are the largest machinery item at ₹189.32 lakh.

Is BIS certification compulsory for wire nails?

BIS certification to IS 723:2023 is offered under BIS Scheme-I, and many buyers and tenders ask for it. As of October 2026 we did not find wire nails on the steel Quality Control Order list we checked, but the wire rod and drawn wire you buy are on it. Confirm the current position with BIS before you start.

Wire nail ka business kaise shuru kare?

Start by fixing the nail sizes your local dealers buy and whether you will draw wire or buy it. Then get machine quotations, a shed with three-phase power, Udyam and GST registration and pollution board consent. A project report puts these into a cost and loan plan. Many first units begin with drawn wire and add drawing later.

Can a small wire nail unit get a PMEGP loan?

A new unit can apply if the project cost is within the PMEGP limit for manufacturing, which SBI lists as ₹50 lakh, with a subsidy of 15–35% of project cost. The promoter brings 5–10% depending on category. Existing units are not eligible. A plant of the size in our sample needs a regular term loan instead.

Is the wire nail project report PDF sample free, and can I use it for a loan?

Yes, the sample is free to open and download. It is illustrative: its figures are representative and not from a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. It shows the chapters and depth a lender expects. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your capacity, wire source, location and lender.
