What is a vitamin c project report?
A vitamin C project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that turns ascorbic acid into tablets: film coated 500 mg tablets, chewables and zinc combinations. It sets out the process, GMP facility, machinery, licences, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender needs.
Entrepreneurs and pharma marketing companies use it to plan a formulation unit and raise a term loan; banks use it to judge whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: vitamin C tablet project report, ascorbic acid tablet manufacturing DPR, project report on vitamin C tablets, vitamin C business plan.
What a bank checks in a vitamin C project report
A credit officer reads a vitamin C report for the few numbers that decide repayment. These are the values in our sample report and why each one gets questioned.
Ascorbic acid prices follow international markets and the rupee. A report that shows a much lower share is assuming prices that may not hold.
One input dominates the bill. The report should test a 10–15% rise in its price and show what happens to profit and DSCR.
Marketing companies and distributors pay late. Trade receivables are the largest current asset in the sample, at ₹291.60 lakh in Year 1.
DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is cash available divided by loan instalments due. It dips in Year 2, the first full year of repayment after the moratorium.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, buyers and suppliers.
Vitamin C manufacturing plant cost in India
Cost is set less by the number of machines than by the GMP building around them: clean rooms, HVAC, a water system and a QC laboratory. The large tier is the unit in our sample report; the two smaller tiers are indicative.

Vitamin C manufacturing process for tablets
Most units use wet granulation, because plain ascorbic acid powder flows and compresses poorly. Some buy a directly compressible ascorbic acid grade and skip granulation and drying, at a higher raw material price.
- Dispensing and sifting
Ascorbic acid and excipients are weighed against the batch record and sifted, with an overage of active added to cover loss over shelf life.
- Granulation
A rapid mixer granulator forms granules using as little binder solution as possible, since moisture starts the breakdown of vitamin C.
- Drying and sizing
A fluid bed dryer brings the granules to a low, fixed moisture content at moderate temperature, and a multi mill sizes them.
- Blending
Granules are blended with lubricant, plus sweetener and flavour for the chewable range.
- Compression
A double rotary press makes tablets to a set weight, hardness and thickness; ascorbic acid is acidic and wears punches faster than many products.
- Film coating
Swallow tablets get a film coat that slows moisture pick-up and the yellowing that shows the vitamin is degrading.
- Blister packing and release
Tablets are packed in low humidity rooms and released only after assay, dissolution and moisture tests pass.
Raw materials for vitamin C tablets
Ascorbic acid of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) grade is the main input, bought with a certificate of analysis and re-tested on arrival. It must be stored cool, dry and away from light, so stock is kept lean: the sample allows 45 days.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Ascorbic acid IP (with overage) | 62% | 462.51 |
| Sodium ascorbate and other actives | 10% | 74.60 |
| Fillers and binders | 12% | 89.52 |
| Sweeteners and flavours for chewables | 8% | 59.68 |
| Film coating material and lubricants | 8% | 59.68 |
| Total | 100% | 745.99 |
Blister foil and cartons are counted separately as packing, at 8.8% of sales in the sample.
Machinery for a vitamin C tablet unit
The double rotary compression machine is the costliest item in the sample. Blister packing comes next, because vitamin C needs a sealed pack to hold its assay.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Multi mill and vibro sifter | Breaks lumps and sizes powder and granules | 38.68 |
| Rapid mixer granulator | Mixes and granulates the blend | 58.02 |
| Fluid bed dryer | Dries granules to a fixed moisture | 58.02 |
| Octagonal blender | Mixes in lubricant and flavour | 33.85 |
| Double rotary tablet compression machine | Presses granules into tablets | 116.05 |
| Auto coating machine | Applies the protective film coat | 48.35 |
| Blister packing machine | Seals tablets in foil strips | 72.53 |
| Dehumidifiers and HVAC | Keeps rooms dry and clean | 33.85 |
| QC laboratory instruments | Assay, dissolution and moisture tests | 24.18 |
| Total plant and machinery | 483.53 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates. Get current quotations, and check each machine against revised Schedule M, before you finalise.
Who buys vitamin C tablets from a new unit?
Demand is spread across the year but peaks in winter and in infection seasons, when chemists and online sellers stock up on immunity products. A new unit rarely starts with its own brand. It usually begins as a third party or loan licence manufacturer for marketing companies, then adds a small brand once its quality record is known.
- Pharmaceutical marketing companies buying third party supply
- Nutraceutical and wellness brands
- Chemists, pharma distributors and stockists
- Hospitals and government medical store tenders
- Export buyers in Africa and Southeast Asia
Where a new unit wins: marketing companies want one supplier who can make coated 500 mg tablets, chewables and vitamin C with zinc on the same line, with stable assay to the end of shelf life.
Licences and approvals for vitamin C tablet manufacturing
The first decision is the regulatory route, because it sets the licence, the facility standard and the GST heading. As of October 2026 the position is as follows.
| Drug manufacturing licence | From the State Drugs Control Department under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, for vitamin C tablets made and sold as drugs, including high-dose 500 mg tablets |
|---|---|
| Revised Schedule M (GMP) | Revised good manufacturing practices; the extended deadline for manufacturers with turnover up to ₹250 crore ran to 31 December 2025, so a new unit must comply from day one |
| FSSAI licence (supplement route) | For products sold as health supplements; FSSAI rules cap added vitamins at the ICMR recommended daily allowance and require Indian Pharmacopoeia quality |
| Product standard | Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) requirements for ascorbic acid and its tablets: assay, dissolution, uniformity and related tests |
| GST | Medicaments under heading 3004 at 5% from 22 September 2025; supplement products may fall under a different heading |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; the category for formulation units differs between states |
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) and GST registration, factory licence and fire NOC as your state requires |
Rules change. Confirm the route and licence with your State Drugs Control Department or FSSAI before you finalise the plant.
Mistakes that weaken a vitamin C project report
- Leaving the regulatory route open
A drug licence plant and an FSSAI supplement unit differ in facility, testing and tax; a report that does not choose one cannot be costed properly.
- No overage or stability budget
Vitamin C loses potency over shelf life, so batches carry extra active and stability studies; both add cost that some reports omit.
- Costing the building like an ordinary shed
Clean rooms, air handling and a QC lab make building the second largest cost after machinery in the sample, at ₹368.93 lakh.
- Treating effervescent tablets as the same line
Effervescent tablets need far drier rooms, typically below 25% relative humidity, plus strip or tube packing; they need their own budget.
- Pricing on MRP instead of contract rates
Third party buyers pay a per-tablet conversion or supply price far below retail, so sales built on MRP overstate DSCR.

Vitamin C project report: frequently asked questions
What is the project cost of a vitamin C tablet manufacturing unit?
A small GMP tablet unit needs roughly ₹1.5–3 crore and a mid-size unit about ₹4–8 crore, including building, utilities and working capital margin. Our sample report models a 7,30,000 tablets per day unit at ₹1,202 lakh. These are indicative figures; your project report works out the cost for your capacity, product mix and state.
Is a vitamin C tablet a drug or a food supplement in India?
It depends on the dose and the claim. FSSAI health supplement rules cap added nutrients at the recommended daily allowance. A high-dose 500 mg tablet is therefore normally made and sold as a drug under a drug manufacturing licence. Low-dose products can be sold as health supplements under an FSSAI licence. Confirm the route for each product before you plan the plant.
Which machines are needed to make vitamin C tablets?
A sifter and multi mill, rapid mixer granulator, fluid bed dryer, blender, rotary tablet compression machine, coating machine and blister packing machine. You also need dehumidifiers and HVAC for low humidity rooms and a quality control laboratory with instruments for assay and dissolution testing.
Is vitamin C tablet manufacturing profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 7,30,000 tablets per day unit reaches a 25% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at about 40% of capacity and pays back in about 3.4 years. Real results depend on ascorbic acid prices, contract rates from marketing companies, product mix and how quickly buyers pay.
Can I get a PMEGP or bank loan for a vitamin C unit?
PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a margin-money subsidy, which rarely fits a GMP tablet plant. Most units take an MSME term loan and cash credit, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover for eligible micro and small enterprises. The lender will ask for a project report with projections, DSCR and your licence status.
What GST rate applies to vitamin C tablets?
Vitamin C tablets made under a drug licence are medicaments under heading 3004. The GST Council cut the rate on most medicines from 12% to 5% from 22 September 2025. Products sold as food-format health supplements may fall under a different heading and rate, so confirm the classification with your tax adviser.
Does this report cover ascorbic acid production from sorbitol?
No. This page and its sample cover a formulation unit that buys ascorbic acid and makes tablets. Making ascorbic acid itself from sorbitol is a fermentation and chemical plant with a much larger investment, and NPCS prepares a separate ascorbic acid project report for that route.
Is the vitamin C project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
