What is a pea protein isolate concentrate project report?

A pea protein isolate concentrate project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that extracts protein from dry yellow peas and spray dries it into powder. It sets out the wet extraction process, machinery, pea sourcing, by-products, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank needs.

Food entrepreneurs and ingredient companies use it to size the plant and raise a term loan; lenders use it to judge whether protein sales and by-product income can repay the loan.

Also known as: pea protein plant project report, pea protein isolate manufacturing DPR, pea protein powder plant project report, project report on pea protein isolate concentrate, pea protein isolate concentrate business plan.

What a bank checks in a pea protein project report

A credit officer reading a pea protein report looks first at pea cost, debt cover and buyer credit. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.

48.9%Raw material share of sales

The sample takes this net of starch and fibre sales. If your report leaves by-products out, this share rises and the margin shrinks.

86%Yellow peas share of raw material cost

Alkali, acid and process aids make up the rest. A 10% rise in pea prices moves profit more than any other input, so the report should test it.

1.49Average debt service coverage ratio

DSCR is cash available for loan repayment divided by the instalments due. The sample's lowest year is 1.30, close to the floor many banks use.

30 daysCredit given to buyers

Food brands and traders pay on credit. Together with 20 days of pea stock and 15 days of finished powder, this sets the cash credit limit.

Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, pea source and buyers.

Pea protein isolate concentrate manufacturing process

Isolate is made by wet extraction: the protein is dissolved in mildly alkaline water, separated from starch and fibre, and then settled out with acid. A dry route using milling and air classification gives a concentrate of about 56% protein with far less water and equipment.

  1. Cleaning and dehulling

Peas are cleaned, destoned and dehulled; the hulls are collected and sold as pea fibre.

  2. Milling

Dehulled peas are ground to fine flour, which carries about 20% protein.

  3. Alkaline extraction

Flour is mixed with about ten parts of water and held near pH 7.5 to 8 so the protein dissolves; a second extraction of the solids lifts recovery.

  4. Starch and fibre separation

Decanter centrifuges and a disc stack separator pull out starch and fibre, which are dried as by-products.

  5. Isoelectric precipitation

Acid brings the protein liquor to about pH 4.5, the point where pea protein is least soluble, and the curd is collected in a decanter.

  6. Neutralisation and pasteurisation

The curd is washed, brought back to neutral pH and pasteurised, for example at 73°C for 15 seconds.

  7. Spray drying

The slurry is homogenised and spray dried, with published pilot runs using about 180°C inlet and 90°C outlet air.

  8. Sieving and packing

Powder is sieved, passed through a metal detector and packed in lined 20–25 kg bags.

Raw materials for pea protein: yellow peas and process chemicals

Dry yellow peas are bought from domestic traders or imported. India's import rules for yellow peas have changed several times since 2023, so units hold about 20 days of stock and the report tests a price rise.

Machinery for a pea protein isolate unit

The spray dryer is the largest single item in the sample, followed by the decanter centrifuges. All wetted parts are food-grade stainless steel and cleaned in place between batches.

Who buys pea protein isolate and concentrate in India

Pea protein is sold business to business. Brands choose it as a protein free of soy, gluten and dairy. Much of what Indian brands use is imported, so a domestic unit competes on price, steady supply and lot-to-lot consistency.

Buyers test each lot for protein content, moisture, solubility, colour, flavour and microbiology before they approve a supplier, and approval can take several trial lots.

  • Protein powder and sports nutrition brands
  • Plant-based meat and dairy alternative makers
  • Bakery, snack and protein bar manufacturers
  • Beverage and nutraceutical companies
  • Food ingredient traders and exporters

Plan for the by-products: most of each tonne of peas leaves the plant as starch and fibre, not protein. A buyer for pea starch and fibre, such as noodle, food or feed makers, is as important to the cash flow as a buyer for the protein.

Licences and approvals for a pea protein unit

Business registrationUdyam (MSME) registration and GST registration
Food licenceFSSAI state licence for turnover of ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore; central licence above ₹20 crore turnover or 2 MT per day. Confirm the product category with the licensing authority before you apply
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, covering wash water and the acid whey left after precipitation
Factory licenceUnder the Factories Act where worker and power thresholds apply; the sample unit employs 20 people
Power and steamIndustrial power connection for the connected load, and boiler registration where a steam boiler heats the dryer

Mistakes that weaken a pea protein project report

  • Taking protein recovery from a lab paper

Bench trials recover about 58–70% of the protein in the flour. Plant losses in whey and wash water are usually higher, so the report should use a tested yield.

  • Leaving out by-product sales, or pricing them too high

Starch and fibre are most of the output by weight. Ignoring them understates income; valuing them at retail prices overstates it.

  • Under-sizing water and effluent treatment

Extraction uses about ten parts water to one part flour, and the acid whey needs treatment before discharge. Pollution consent depends on it.

  • Assuming buyers sign up from the first lot

Brands test several trial lots before approval. The first months run below capacity, and working capital must carry that gap.

Pea Protein Isolate Concentrate project report: frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up a pea protein isolate plant in India?

Our sample report models a 660 kg per day unit at ₹220 lakh, including land, building, machinery and working capital margin. Indicative costs rise to about ₹6–14 crore for 2–5 metric tonnes (MT) per day and ₹25–40 crore for 10–15 MT per day. The spray dryer and decanter centrifuges set most of the machinery bill, so get quotations early.

What is the difference between pea protein isolate and pea protein concentrate?

The difference is protein content and the process used. Concentrate made by dry milling and air classification carries about 56% protein, because some starch and fibre stay in. Isolate is made by wet extraction and reaches about 80–90% protein. Isolate sells at a higher price but needs water, centrifuges, a spray dryer and effluent treatment.

How many kg of yellow peas are needed for 1 kg of pea protein isolate?

Plan for roughly 6–8 kg of peas per kg of isolate as an indicative figure. Pea flour carries about 20% protein, and published trials recover about 58–70% of it, depending on whether the solids are extracted once or twice. Most of the remaining weight leaves as starch and fibre, which are dried and sold.

Is pea protein manufacturing profitable?

In our illustrative sample, a 660 kg per day unit selling at ₹305 per kg earns ₹33 lakh net profit in Year 3, with a 15% return on investment and break-even at 47% of capacity. Real profit depends on pea prices, protein recovery, by-product sales and how fast buyers approve your product.

Can I get a PMEGP or PMFME subsidy for a pea protein unit?

Only a very small unit fits. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, and PMFME gives a 35% credit-linked subsidy up to ₹10 lakh for micro food units, with new units limited to ODOP products. Most pea protein plants take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover, with cover of up to ₹10 crore as of October 2026.

Which FSSAI licence does a pea protein unit need?

A state FSSAI licence applies for turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore a year. A central licence is needed above ₹20 crore turnover or above 2 MT per day of production. The sample unit, with ₹423 lakh of Year 3 sales and 660 kg per day capacity, falls under a state licence.

Is the sample report free and can I use it for a loan?

The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report; its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
