The twelve jewellery business ideas below are sorted by one question: how much gold or silver stock must you hold? To start today, begin with handmade brass or clay pieces, personalised jewellery made to order, or a repair and restyling bench. None of them ties your money up in metal, and none is forced into hallmarking. Silver and lightweight gold labels earn more per piece but carry price risk, while 3D design and classes need skill and tools but no stock.

Gold touched ₹1,70,480 per 10 grams in January 2026 and had slipped to about ₹1,42,800 by late June, and the jewellers' council noted in its review of the first six months that buyers moved to lighter pieces. A light product sold to order is a safer start than a counter full of metal.

Which of the 12 jewellery business ideas suits your stock risk and skills?

The table runs from least to most metal stock, since stock risk decides who survives a price swing, and shows what you pay for first.

Ideas 1 to 4 earn on design and finishing, not metal. Brass and clay pieces sell on look and story, so a clear niche such as temple motifs or festival earrings sets the price more than materials do. Rental puts one set on many brides, so photograph each set at hand over and take a deposit, because damage and late returns are the real cost.

Ideas 5 to 8 earn on the engraving, the design or the appointment. Regional scripts such as Tamil, Bengali, Devanagari and Urdu are worth testing, since English name pendants are everywhere and script options are harder to find. A welded studio needs practice on scrap chain before it touches a customer's wrist.

Ideas 10 to 12 need no stock, and classes also feed your own customer list.

Where does BIS hallmarking start and stop for a jewellery seller?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) makes hallmarking mandatory for gold jewellery and gold artefacts in six purities: 14, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 24 carat. Each piece carries the BIS mark, a purity mark and a six character code called HUID, and a jeweller selling hallmarked pieces must register with BIS. According to the BIS jeweller FAQ, jewellers with annual turnover up to ₹40 lakh are not covered, and the order applies district by district, so check your district before stocking gold (as of October 2026).

Silver is different. A June 2026 Business Today report quoting the BIS director general says silver hallmarking is still voluntary, but a piece that is hallmarked must carry a HUID. Brass, clay, resin and beads fall outside the order. Idea 9 is the only one where you should settle registration before buying stock.

What did the 2026 price swing do to jewellery stock?

Silver went from ₹4,02,490 per kg in January to about ₹2,25,940 by the end of June, a fall of roughly 44%, according to the same review by the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC). Silver stock bought at the peak lost nearly half its metal value in six months. Made to order work and short stock cycles protect you better than a big opening inventory.

Buyers also traded down. In a February 2026 Outlook Business interview, the founder of jewellery brand GIVA called silver "the Gen Z gold", said the brand moved from 18K to 14K and then piloted 9K gold, and said men's jewellery rose from nothing to over 12% of its sales in three years.

How do you pick one idea out of twelve?

  • Cannot risk stock money. Start with ideas 1 to 4 or 10 to 12.
  • Design eye and an online audience. Ideas 5, 7 or 8 sell on photographs. Ask three workshops for samples before you pay, and put quality terms in writing as in contract manufacturing.
  • Studio or events. Idea 6, after practice.
  • Gold trade contacts and working capital. Idea 9. Jaipur is the usual stop for coloured stones and silver, Surat for lab grown diamonds, Rajkot and Kolkata for gold work.

Other manufacturing business ideas sit beside jewellery if none of these fits.

Which schemes can fund a jewellery start?

Under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh and service projects up to ₹20 lakh qualify for a margin money subsidy of 15% to 35% of project cost, depending on category and whether you are urban or rural. Your own contribution is 5% to 10% (as of October 2026, per the Himachal Pradesh Khadi and Village Industries Board). Mudra loans, as listed by Central Bank of India, run in four tiers: up to ₹50,000, ₹50,001 to ₹5 lakh, ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh and ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh.

Goldsmith (Sunar) artisans can also look at the PM Vishwakarma Yojana; check whether earlier Mudra or PMEGP loans affect eligibility. Banks decide whether your unit counts as manufacturing or service, so ask which cap applies before you draw up costs.

What should you do before buying your first tools?

  1. Pick one group, then one idea, and name the single customer you are selling to.
  2. Make or source ten pieces, photograph them well and list them on one marketplace or Instagram before buying tools in bulk.
  3. Build a cost sheet per piece with materials, labour, packaging, platform fees and expected returns, and price from that, not from a competitor's tag.
  4. If ideas 7 to 9 are on your list, decide whether you will hallmark, and ask a chartered accountant about registration and GST for your turnover.
  5. Read the jewellery manufacturing guide if you plan gold, or compare low investment business ideas beyond jewellery.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of jewellery business is the most profitable?

No single type wins. Margins are usually better where the customer pays for design, engraving or your time, such as personalised pieces, welded jewellery and repair, than where they compare metal per gram. Fees, returns and your own labour change the result, so build your cost sheet before trusting anyone's percentage.

What jewellery item sells the most?

No India wide ranking by item exists for small sellers. The GJC review points to lighter pieces, and the GIVA founder says men buy chains, bracelets, rings and single earrings. Test five or six designs in small batches before committing to one.

What is the Gen Z trend in jewellery?

Silver, lighter pieces and daily wear. GIVA's founder says Gen Z are about 30 to 40% of its customers. That is one brand's view, not a market survey, so treat it as a direction to test.

Which jewellery business is best for a beginner?

One that does not tie up money in metal, such as brass or clay jewellery, personalised pieces made to order, or classes. You learn the craft and test demand without a price swing hitting your stock. Move to silver or gold labels once you know what sells.

Do I need a licence to sell handmade jewellery in India?

BIS registration applies to selling hallmarked gold, and brass, clay, resin and bead jewellery is outside that order. You may still need GST registration, a shop licence for a studio and Udyam registration for MSME schemes, so confirm with a chartered accountant.
