A lab-grown diamond manufacturing business in India starts with one decision: grow the stones yourself, or buy rough stones and cut them. Growing is the capital-heavy end. Two project reports from Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS), each for a plant making about 30 one-carat stones a day, put plant and machinery at ₹2 crore and total investment between ₹3.6 crore and ₹5.3 crore.
The harder question is price, not demand. Diamond analyst Edahn Golan's wholesale index for lab-grown stones was still 93% below its July 2018 level in the third quarter of 2026, and India's polished lab-grown exports fell about 10.6% in value in FY2025-26 even as volumes rose. A new plant earns money only if its cost per carat sits well under what buyers pay today.
Which route into lab-grown diamond manufacturing suits you: growing, cutting or jewellery?
Three different businesses sit under this one search, and they need different money and skills.
| Route | What you do | Capital need |
|---|---|---|
| Grow rough stones | Run chemical vapour deposition (CVD) reactors or high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) presses, then sell the rough or polish it yourself | Highest: machines, power connection, controlled room |
| Cut and polish | Buy rough, then cut and polish for exporters and wholesalers | Moderate: laser, bruting and polishing machines |
| Make jewellery | Set stones in gold or silver and sell to retailers or consumers | Depends on stock held and brand spend |
Grow only if you already have cheap, steady power and a buyer or polishing partner for the rough. Otherwise start in cutting or jewellery, learn what buyers pay, and add growing later. For the jewellery route, read the guide to gold and diamond jewellery manufacturing. The rest of this page assumes you are growing.
What is the setup cost of a lab-grown diamond plant in India?
The closest published figures come from two NPCS project reports for a plant of 30 carats a day. One states cost of project and the other total capital investment, so read those lines separately.
| Item | Report: Lab-Grown Diamonds (CVD Diamonds) | Report: Setup Plant of Lab Cultured Diamonds From Graphite |
|---|---|---|
| Plant and machinery | ₹2 crore | ₹200 lakh |
| Cost of project / total capital investment | ₹5.34 crore | ₹361 lakh |
| Return | 24% | 25% |
| Break-even point | 45% | 57% |
Break-even is the share of capacity the plant must use to cover its costs, so 57% leaves less room for a bad month than 45%. The number of reactors or presses sets most of the machinery bill, and the power connection decides how many you can run together.
Price matters as much as cost. At 330 working days, 30 carats a day is 9,900 carats a year, so every ₹1,000 change in price per carat moves annual revenue by about ₹99 lakh. A ₹2,000 swing is close to ₹2 crore. Polished weight is lower than grown weight, so run this sum with your own yield.
NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994 across more than 40 sectors, in the format banks usually ask for.
How are lab-grown diamonds grown, step by step?
CVD builds a stone from gas. HPHT growth squeezes carbon into diamond. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has seen more CVD than HPHT stones since about 2016, and National Jeweler reported in 2022 that most Indian growers use CVD.
- Select seeds. Every stone grows on a diamond seed, so seed supply is a cost and an import question.
- Grow. In CVD, hydrogen and methane enter a chamber and a microwave plasma deposits carbon layer by layer on the seed. In HPHT, graphite powder with a metal flux sits in a capsule at 5 to 6 gigapascals and 1,300 to 1,600°C.
- Treat. Fast CVD recipes can give brown stones, and GIA says about 80% of the CVD diamonds it sees were treated after growth. Budget for it or find a job-work partner.
- Cut and polish. The crystal is sawn or laser-cut, then shaped and polished.
- Inspect and grade. Commercial-size stones usually carry a "LABORATORY-GROWN" girdle inscription. Edahn Golan's Mumbai and Surat price list covers goods certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), which shows whose reports the trade expects.
What machines does a lab-grown diamond plant need?
| Equipment | What it does | Ask the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| CVD reactor | Runs the gas chamber and microwave plasma | Stones per run, run length, service engineers in India |
| HPHT press | Applies the pressure and heat to a capsule | Capsule yield, spares, press life |
| Annealing furnace | Treats grown stones to change colour | Buy or outsource |
| Laser cutter and saw | Splits crystals into rough | Material loss, throughput |
| Bruting and polishing machines | Shape and finish the stone | Polishing yield per carat |
| Power backup | Keeps long runs alive through an outage | Size against sanctioned load |
Reactors run for days or weeks, so power connection, backup and tariff decide how many machines you can use. National Jeweler reported that early reactors came from Japan, Taiwan, Germany and Russia, while some growers now assemble machines in India from imported parts. Budget 2023 also funded a five-year IIT research grant to build seeds and machines at home. Surat is the main grower cluster; see Gujarat's industrial areas for sites.
Which approvals, certificates and duties apply?
| Item | Why you need it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MSME (Udyam) registration | The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) asks manufacturer exporters for it | Also opens MSME benefits |
| GST registration | Sales and input credit | Confirm the current rate for your product with your accountant |
| Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) | Imports of seeds and machines, and exports | Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT); GJEPC wants a copy |
| GJEPC registration (RCMC) | Exporters of gems and jewellery register with GJEPC | Valid five years to 31 March |
| Seed import concession | Budget 2023 cut seed duty from 5% to nil | A customs notification of October 2025 extends it to 31 March 2028; check before each import |
| Factory, pollution and gas approvals | Hydrogen and methane are flammable | Ask your state authorities about storage rules |
Is lab-grown diamond manufacturing profitable at today's prices?
| Signal | Latest reading | What it means for a new plant |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale price index, Q3 2026 (Edahn Golan, via Professional Jeweller, 14 October 2026) | Down 15% on a year ago, 93% below July 2018 | Model at today's price, not a 2022 price |
| 1 to 3 carat rounds, Q3 2026 | About 9% down on a year ago; 2 carat rounds down 20% | Bigger stones fell hardest |
| India polished exports, FY2025-26 (GJEPC data via DeshGujarat) | About $1.1 billion, down about 10.6% | More carats sold for less money |
| Average export price | Roughly $60 a carat, worked out from provisional GJEPC volumes | A reference for the average stone, not a gem |
GJEPC read the rise in volumes as price softness when it reported April 2025 to January 2026 exports. Scale players compete too: Greenlab had about 1,000 CVD reactors in 2022. A new grower wins only on lower cost per carat or a buyer others lack. Do not order machines until you can show a margin per carat at a price 20% below today's, and look at export business ideas for selling abroad.
What should you do next?
- Collect quotes for reactors or presses with delivered price, power load and service terms.
- Write a cost-per-carat sheet covering power, gas, seeds, labour and polishing yield.
- Line up a buyer or polishing partner before ordering.
- Choose the site: Surat for proximity, or elsewhere if power is cheaper and polishing is arranged.
- Turn the numbers into a detailed project report and a manufacturing feasibility study, then compare startup funding options.
An NPCS project report for this product covers plant and machinery with suppliers, raw material costs, manpower, project cost, working capital, break-even and a 5 to 10 year cash flow. The lender decides on its own terms. More guides sit in other manufacturing project guides.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to grow a lab-grown diamond?
GIA says HPHT growth typically takes an hour to a few weeks, depending on size. It gives no standard CVD range, but a 17 carat CVD crystal took 40 to 45 days and a 75.33 carat crystal reported in 2024 took nine months.
Should a new plant choose CVD or HPHT?
HPHT runs in one uninterrupted pass, which makes large colourless stones harder to control. CVD is built in stages but often needs treatment afterwards. Choose by the stone size you will sell and the local service the supplier offers.
Can I start a lab-grown diamond business with a small budget?
Not in growing, going by the NPCS figures above. A smaller budget fits polishing job work, trading certified polished stones or jewellery.
Do I have to set up in Surat?
No, but Surat is the main grower cluster, so buyers, polishers and technicians sit close. A plant elsewhere needs its own polishing tie-up and a plan for moving stones to buyers.
