The 25 engineering goods business ideas below fall into three kinds of business, and the kind you pick shapes your capital, your customers and your first year more than the product does. Job work sells your machine hours. Parts supply (fasteners, bearings, gears, valves) sells to original equipment manufacturers, or OEMs, who must approve you before volume orders arrive. Machines (pumps, conveyors, cranes, boilers, transformers) go to end users and tie up the most money in design, stock and service.

Demand is rarely the problem. India's engineering exports touched US$122.43 billion in the year to March 2026, according to EEPC India's March 2026 trade analysis, led by automobiles and industrial machinery. What decides who lasts is whether the plant is sized to the cheque its owner can write and to the approval cycle its buyers run. The table sorts all 25 ideas on those two things.

The 25 engineering goods business ideas, by buyer and capital locked

Capital is ranked against the other rows (machine type, stock and testing equipment drive it); rupee figures for four products follow below. Job work is contract manufacturing, and the contract manufacturing guide explains how it is contracted.

Read the Kind column first: job work needs your time and a few well-kept machines, parts need patience through approval, machines need money and a service team.

How much capital does an engineering goods plant need, and which scheme can fund it?

The cheque depends on the product more than the sector. Four NPCS project reports show the spread.

NPCS project reportCapacityPlant and machineryCost of projectMachinery shareReturnBreak-even
Nuts & Bolts (M.S. Fasteners)625 kg bolts and 125 kg nuts a day₹33 lakh₹54 lakh61%27%71%
Steel Hinges & Tower Bolts540 MT a year of each₹78 lakh₹261 lakh30%28%55%
MIG Welding Wire840 MT a year₹122 lakh₹318 lakh38%27%64%
Power Transformer900 nos. a year₹306 lakh₹1,024 lakh30%29%52%

Machinery share is plant and machinery divided by cost of project (33 ÷ 54, 78 ÷ 261, 122 ÷ 318, 306 ÷ 1,024). Machines are only 30% to 61% of the cost, so budget from the cost of project, not the machine quote. Return and break-even are as listed in each report and move with capacity.

The fastener plant, at ₹54 lakh, sits just above the ₹50 lakh ceiling for a new manufacturing project in the PMEGP guidelines (version of 7 December 2023). PMEGP runs through banks, gives a subsidy of 15% to 35% by category and area, and asks for a project report. A trimmed first phase is how a unit like this would use it.

Size class affects loans and how buyers see you. Investment up to ₹2.5 crore is micro, ₹25 crore small and ₹125 crore medium, with turnover limits of ₹10 crore, ₹100 crore and ₹500 crore, in force since 1 April 2025, as All India Radio reported. The MSME scheme page covers the benefits.

Which engineering business idea fits your background, degree or not?

  • Mechanical or production engineers: machined components, tools and dies, gears and fabrication, where your shop-floor judgment is the product.
  • Electrical engineers: transformers, power equipment and hydraulic control parts; the electrical and electronics ideas list goes deeper.
  • Civil or construction backgrounds: structural fabrication, cranes and construction equipment.
  • No engineering degree: PMEGP asks only for a Class 8 pass on manufacturing projects above ₹10 lakh. Start with job work, hire a plant head who has run a similar shop, and browse steel and metal ideas for the next step. Other sectors sit in the manufacturing business ideas hub.

What stands between you and the first order?

  • Buyer approval: parts buyers want a sample, an audit and a trial lot before volume. Keep working capital to last through that wait. Job work buyers run a first-article check on the first part.
  • Boilers: the Indian Boiler Regulations, 2026, issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade in October 2026, replace the 1950 rules. KS&K's summary says manufacturers are recognised in classes by what they may build, component makers form a separate category, and recognition must be renewed.
  • BIS marking: check on the BIS website whether your product currently needs certification before ordering machinery.
  • Registrations and site consents: Udyam and GST registration are what most buyers and banks ask for first. Foundries and forging shops should confirm pollution-board consent for the site early.

Next steps before you order a machine

  1. Pick the kind first (job work, parts or machines), then one product.
  2. Ask three buyers of that product what sample, certificate or trial they need before a first order, and how long it takes.
  3. Collect quotes from two machinery suppliers and cost the whole plant, then test it against the ₹50 lakh PMEGP ceiling and your size class. The feasibility study guide shows the checks a lender runs.

Past ₹25 lakh, expect a lender to ask for a full project report. An NPCS project report for a specific product sets out the process, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, manpower, project cost, working capital, profitability, break-even and a multi-year cash flow, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra typically ask for. NPCS has prepared them since 1994, across more than 40 sectors; acceptance is the lender's decision.

Frequently asked questions about engineering goods business ideas

Which engineering goods does India export the most?

Automobiles and auto components lead at US$26.83 billion in FY26, followed by industrial machinery (US$22.13 billion), iron and steel products (US$20.68 billion) and electrical machinery (US$15.36 billion). The United States was the largest destination at US$19.60 billion. These are EEPC India's March 2026 figures.

Can I start an engineering goods business with ₹50 lakh?

Yes, in the lighter kinds. ₹50 lakh is also the PMEGP ceiling for a new manufacturing project, and light fabrication, job work, small fastener lines and tool-room work are the usual fits at that size. Boilers, transformers, bearings and heavy castings sit in the heavy-capital group in the table and need a much larger cheque.

Which engineering business gives ₹2 lakh a month or a 50% profit margin?

None can promise either. Monthly profit follows capacity used, order book and how fast customers pay. The four NPCS reports above list returns of 27% to 29% and break-even between 52% and 71%, which describe the whole project at the assumed capacity, not the margin on each sale. Be wary of any 50% margin claim until you see the cost sheet.

Can I start with job work before making my own product?

Yes, and it is a common way in. A customer sends the drawing and pays for machining or fabrication, so you need no product approval and little stock. The risks are dependence on two or three customers and thin pricing power. Use the first year to learn tolerances and delivery discipline, then move into parts for the same buyers.
