A ball bearing manufacturing business is three small factories under one roof: a ring line that turns, hardens and grinds steel, a ball line that forms and laps steel spheres, and an assembly line that fits rings, balls and a cage together. Most first plants do not build all three. They make the rings, assemble, and buy balls and cages from specialist makers, then focus on one product, usually the single row deep groove bearing used in motors, compressors, fans and conveyors.
Think in crores, not lakhs. In the NPCS project report for a neighbouring product, a roller bearing plant making 4,000 pieces a day, machinery alone costs ₹6.04 crore and the whole project ₹14.12 crore. The steel is a chrome grade called 52100, and the plant earns nothing until it has a steady order book.
Which route should a first ball bearing plant take?
The route fixes your investment, your quality risk and how much of the process you must master. Ball making is a trade of its own, so most newcomers buy balls.
| Route | You make | You buy | Where the risk sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full line | Rings, balls, cages, assembly | Steel tube, bar, wire | Ball quality and the longest machine list |
| Rings and assembly | Rings, assembly | Finished balls, cages | Heat treatment and grinding accuracy; one ball supplier |
| Assembly and final grinding | Final grinding, assembly | Hardened rings, balls, cages | Little value is yours, so price pressure hits first |
For a first plant, take the second route. It keeps heat treatment and ring grinding, the steps that do most to set how long a bearing lasts, in your hands without the ball line. Add ball making once volumes justify it.
Begin with one product. The single row deep groove bearing (the 62xx and 63xx series) is the most common ball bearing type, used in electric motors, compressors, fans and conveyors, according to the NPCS ball bearing profile. More options sit among our engineering manufacturing ideas.
How are ball bearings made, step by step?
Every plant follows these eight steps; the figures come from published descriptions, and your settings depend on the machine maker.
- Test the steel. Check incoming lots for alloy content. The standard bearing steel is grade 52100, about 1% carbon and 1% chromium.
- Turn the rings. Automatic lathes cut tube or bar slightly oversize, leaving metal to finish after hardening.
- Harden the rings. Heat to about 840°C, quench in oil, then temper at about 150°C. Test hardness at each stage.
- Grind and lap the raceways. Cutting tools cannot touch hardened steel, so grinding wheels set size and groove shape, and fine abrasive slurry gives a near mirror finish.
- Make the balls, or buy them. Wire is cut and pressed between dies, the "flash" is rolled off between grooved cast iron discs, and the balls are hardened, ground, then lapped for 8 to 10 hours. That lapping is why they are round: standard balls must be within about 25 millionths of an inch (roughly 0.6 micrometre), precision balls within 5.
- Form the cages. Steel cages are stamped in a two-part die; plastic cages are injection moulded.
- Assemble. Offset the inner ring, drop in the balls, centre the rings so the balls spread evenly, then fit the cage.
- Inspect, coat and pack. Check size and shape through the line, apply rust preventative, pack.
Which machines does a ball bearing plant need?
Skip the ball rows if you buy balls.
| Stage | Machine | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Ring blanks | Automatic or CNC lathe | Cuts rings slightly oversize |
| Ball forming | Cold heading and flashing machines | Presses wire into near spheres, removes flash |
| Hardening | Furnace, oil quench tank, tempering oven | Hardens rings and balls |
| Ring finishing | Face, bore, outer diameter and race grinders; honing machine | Sets size, groove shape, surface finish |
| Ball finishing | Ball grinder and lapping machine | Sets final size and roundness |
| Cages and testing | Stamping press or moulding machine; hardness tester, gauges | Makes cages; checks every stage |
Prices depend on whether lathes are CNC and grinders indigenous or imported. The NPCS ball bearing profile lists indigenous machinery, imported machinery, erection and laboratory equipment as separate lines, so ask suppliers to quote the same way. Cold heading is also how fasteners are made (see our nut and bolt manufacturing guide), and grinding wheels are a regular purchase, covered in the grinding wheel manufacturing guide.
How much does a bearing plant cost, and is it profitable?
The ball bearing profile masks its numbers, so the closest NPCS figures are for roller bearings. Both share the ring line of turning, heat treatment and grinding; a ball plant adds a ball line or a budget for bought balls.
| Item | NPCS roller bearing report (ID 40 mm, OD 80 mm) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 4,000 pieces a day |
| Plant and machinery | ₹604 lakh |
| Total project cost | ₹1,412 lakh |
| Projected return | 28% |
| Break-even | 70% |
Look hardest at the last row. A break-even of 70% means the plant covers its costs only at about 70% of rated capacity, so profit depends on the order book more than on margin per piece. Sign up first-year buyers before you order machines. Banks will want these numbers worked out for your capacity in a detailed project report.
What steel does a ball bearing plant buy?
Rings, and balls if you make them, use grade 52100 chrome steel; cages use sheet steel or plastic granules, and finishing needs rust preventative and packing. Stainless 440C resists corrosion but carries less load, so keep it for special orders. Aerospace steel M50 costs roughly ten times as much as 52100, according to an engineering reference, so start with 52100 and test each lot for alloy content.
Does a ball bearing plant need a BIS licence?
Settle this before you sign for machinery. In June 2025 India notified a draft Bearings Quality Control Order to the World Trade Organization. It would make the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark compulsory for single row deep groove ball bearings (IS 6455) and other types, with 12 months to comply for larger firms, 15 for small and 18 for micro enterprises after final notification, according to a law firm's tracker. Trackers differ on whether and when the final order was issued, so check its status and your deadline on the BIS website as of October 2026.
Also plan for Udyam registration, GST, the state factory licence and consent from the State Pollution Control Board; the heat treatment furnace and quench oil are likely to draw questions there.
Who already makes ball bearings in India, and where can a new plant fit?
SKF India, Schaeffler India, NRB Bearings and NBC Bearings (National Engineering Industries) are established names; NRB describes itself as making needle roller bearings in India since 1965. A new plant will usually not win automotive OEM contracts early, because those buyers qualify suppliers slowly. A workable start is local makers of electric motors, fans and compressors, and the replacement market, where delivery time and price count as much as brand.
What should you do before you order a single machine?
- Choose one product and the rings and assembly route.
- Confirm the BIS position for that product.
- Get written quotes from two or three ball and cage suppliers, with lot sizes and delivery times.
- Collect letters of intent from buyers for enough output to reach break-even.
- Take indigenous and imported machine quotes, and ask for trial runs on 52100 steel.
- Have a detailed project report prepared and look at MSME government schemes for finance.
An NPCS project report for a bearing plant covers the market survey, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, manpower, layout and financials, including break-even and a 5 to 10 year cash flow, in the format banks ask for. NPCS has prepared more than 5,000 project reports since 1994, so use one to test your route before approaching a lender. If ring making appeals but bearings do not, the auto component manufacturing guide covers a neighbouring route.
Frequently asked questions
Is the bearing business profitable?
It can be, but only at volume. In the NPCS roller bearing report, break-even comes at 70%, so profit depends on keeping the plant loaded.
Which companies manufacture ball bearings in India?
Established makers include SKF India, Schaeffler India, NRB Bearings and NBC Bearings (National Engineering Industries). A new plant is unlikely to compete with them head on, so aim at a narrow range and local buyers first.
Which is better, SKF or NTN?
Neither is better in every case. The right choice depends on load, speed and operating conditions, and on buying genuine stock from an authorised dealer. For your own plant, the useful benchmark is a hardness and tolerance test report for each lot, not a brand name.
Is bearing trading the same as bearing manufacturing?
No. Trading needs stock, working capital and brand authorisation but no plant. Manufacturing needs a ring line, heat treatment, grinding and quality control, with investment in crores. This page covers manufacturing.
