In wire nails manufacturing, the machine is the smaller part of the bill. The Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) project report for a plant making about 370 tonnes a year puts total capital investment at ₹59 lakh, with only ₹11 lakh of that in plant and machinery, and another NPCS report puts a 4-tonne-a-day plant at ₹141 lakh. The unit buys coils of mild steel wire, runs them through an automatic machine that cuts, heads and points each piece, and sells the nails by the kilo to hardware dealers, carpenters, and packaging and pallet makers. The rest of the budget is typically building, power and working capital for steel wire. Settle two things before you look at machines: who supplies wire at a steady price, and which dealers will take your nails every week.
How much does it cost to set up a wire nail manufacturing unit?
Plant and machinery was about a fifth of total capital investment in both NPCS reports, so budget for the shed, power and wire stock before comparing machines.
| Item | Small plant (NPCS report) | Mid-size plant (NPCS report) |
|---|---|---|
| Output | 369,600 kg a year | 4,000 kg a day |
| Plant and machinery | ₹11 lakh | ₹27 lakh |
| Total capital investment | ₹59 lakh | ₹141 lakh |
Machine sellers often quote far lower figures that cover the machine alone. Ask what they leave out: electrical load, installation, a trial run and the first stock of wire. Shed rent or build, drawing wire yourself and dealer credit days also move the total. Compare other steel and metal business ideas by investment band.
Is a wire nail business profitable?
Profit is the gap between what you pay for wire and what dealers pay per kilo, after power, labour, die wear and rent. The small plant above lists a return of 25% and a break-even point of 53%. Treat both as indicative, since they rest on that report's price assumptions.
- Price the gap first. Note this week's wire price and the dealer's rate per kilo for your size. A better machine will not fix a thin gap.
- Watch scrap. The same plant lists 34,800 kg of wire scrap against 369,600 kg of nails, about 9 kg per 100 kg. Ask the seller what scrap rate they will stand behind.
- Begin with drawn wire. Drawing from rod adds a machine, descaling and power. Price it against a drawer's per-tonne charge once use is steady.
How are wire nails made?
Nails made to IS 723:2023, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification for steel countersunk head wire nails, go through six steps.
- Check the wire. The standard calls for mild steel wire to IS 280. Keep coils dry, as rust makes dull, weak nails.
- Draw the wire, only if you start from rod, through dies of shrinking size.
- Cut, head and point. The machine straightens, cuts, heads and points the wire in one cycle.
- Tumble. A drum rubs off oil and burrs, giving the bright finish the standard sets as the default.
- Sort and test. Screen out bent and headless pieces, and sample length, head and point.
- Weigh and pack. Mark the maker's name or trade mark, nail type, size and net weight.
Which machines does a wire nail unit need?
Ask every supplier for kilos per hour on your sizes, dies per size, spare die prices and a trial run on your own wire.
| Machine | What it does |
|---|---|
| Automatic wire nail making machine | Straightens, cuts, heads and points the wire |
| Polishing drum | Cleans and brightens the nails |
| Vibrating screen and scale | Separates faulty pieces and weighs packs |
| Wire drawing machine with descaler | Draws rod to shank diameter, only if you buy rod |
How many nails make a kilo, and what does the standard ask for?
Counts per kilo fall fast as nails grow. IS 723:2023 gives these approximate figures and says they vary considerably.
| Shank diameter (mm) | Length (mm) | Approx. nails per kg |
|---|---|---|
| 2.00 | 25 | 1,470 |
| 2.00 | 50 | 650 |
| 4.00 | 100 | 90 |
| 5.00 | 125 | 50 |
A 25 mm (1 inch) nail with a 2.00 mm shank therefore runs about 1,470 to the kilo. The standard asks for a minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa (wire strength) and a bend test in which the nail must not crack when doubled over. Nails are supplied bright finished unless the buyer says otherwise. The BIS Standard Mark is optional, so ask your first buyers whether they need it.
What approvals does a wire nail unit need?
| Approval | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Udyam registration | Registers the unit as a micro, small or medium enterprise (MSME). A micro enterprise has plant and machinery up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore from 1 April 2025, so both plants above qualify on machinery. |
| Pollution control board consent | State boards list wire drawing and wire nail units in the Orange category, between Red and Green (Odisha's list names wire nails). Expect consent to establish before installing machines and consent to operate before production. |
| GST and local licences | Dealers will ask for tax invoices. Factory or shop licences and the power load sanction follow state rules, and the District Industries Centre can list them. |
How do you fund a wire nail unit, and does PMEGP fit?
The Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) subsidises new manufacturing projects costing up to ₹50 lakh, per its guidelines. For new units the general category gets 25% in rural and 15% in urban areas, and special categories 35% and 25%. Check its status first. It was approved only to 31 March 2026, and in August 2026 the MSME ministry told the Rajya Sabha that further releases wait on approval to continue it. The ₹59 lakh plant is above the ceiling, so size a PMEGP unit to ₹50 lakh or ask your bank how it treats the excess. See also MSME schemes.
Mudra loans in the Tarun category go up to ₹20 lakh for borrowers who have repaid an earlier loan, per the Union Budget 2024-25 highlights. Larger bank loans need a project report, and NPCS has prepared them since 1994, more than 5,000 across 40+ sectors.
Who buys wire nails, and where do small units go wrong?
Hardware and building-material dealers buy most, then carpenters, furniture workshops, packing-case and pallet makers, and contractors. The NPCS small-plant report ties demand to building activity and housing programmes. Nails sell by the kilo, mostly on dealer credit, which is where small units slip.
- Wire prices move fast and dealer rates lag, squeezing the gap for weeks.
- One slow dealer can hold a month of wire money.
- Headless, bent or rusty nails bring whole bags back.
Win first dealers with samples of the sizes they reorder most.
What should you do before you buy a machine?
- Get written wire quotes from three suppliers with price, credit days and minimum lot.
- Visit ten dealers and pack houses in your district, noting sizes, rates and payment days.
- Collect two or three machine quotes with kilos per hour, scrap rate, dies and a trial run.
- Check the electrical load and your state board's category for the site, register on Udyam, and confirm PMEGP status.
An NPCS project report for wire nails covers the process with flow sheet, machinery and suppliers, raw materials, land and building, manpower, and financial tables for project cost, working capital, break-even and cash flow. It follows the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra typically ask for; acceptance is always the lender's decision.
Frequently asked questions about wire nail manufacturing
What is the price of wire nails in India?
There is no single price. Nails sell by the kilo, and the rate follows the wire price, nail size and finish. Smaller nails usually fetch more per kilo because the machine turns out fewer kilos an hour. Ask three dealers in your district what they pay manufacturers for your sizes.
Are nails a good side hustle?
Rarely. The unit needs a machine, power, shed space, wire stock, dealer credit and someone present daily to watch quality. It suits a home poorly, since the machines are noisy and the unit needs pollution-board consent. Selling bought-in nails first teaches you what dealers need.
How much can a nail unit earn in a month, for example ₹2 lakh?
Divide your monthly target by your margin per kilo to get the kilos you must sell. The margin is the dealer's rate minus wire cost, scrap, power, labour and die wear, so work it out from real quotes. Then check your machine can make that quantity over the shifts you run.
What is the easiest manufacturing business to start?
Wire nails have fewer steps than most: one core machine, no chemistry, a product sold by weight. Easy to run is not easy to profit from, since margin rests on wire cost and dealer credit. Compare nut and bolt manufacturing, a metal fabrication business or other small-scale business ideas before you choose.
