The right small business idea in India is the one that matches what you already own. With a saleable skill, you can start selling services this month. A spare room and a working kitchen suit food and craft products. If you can put together a few lakh rupees, one or two machines can give you a product you control. This page sorts small business ideas by that starting point and names the loan, registration and licence that usually follow.
As of October 2026, two rules have moved, and many older lists still quote the old ones. From 1 April 2026, a food business with a yearly turnover up to ₹1.5 crore needs only registration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), where the limit used to be ₹12 lakh. And since October 2024, Mudra loans can go up to ₹20 lakh for borrowers who have repaid an earlier loan. Farming and animal husbandry are left out.
Which small business can you start with ₹50,000, ₹5 lakh or ₹20 lakh?
Your budget narrows the field faster than your taste does. The bands below follow the Mudra loan tiers, so the idea and the loan line up.
| Budget band (Mudra tier) | What the money mostly buys | Ideas that usually fit |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹50,000 (Shishu) | A laptop or hand tools, and your own time | Tutoring, bookkeeping and return filing, social media management, graphic design, tiffin service, reselling everyday goods |
| ₹50,000-₹5 lakh (Kishore) | Small equipment, first stock, a rented room | Home bakery, pickles and papad, candles, incense sticks, spice grinding and packing, tailoring |
| ₹5 lakh-₹20 lakh (Tarun and Tarun Plus) | A shed, power-driven machines, raw material and working capital | Areca leaf plates, jute bags, cotton wicks, cold-pressed oil, cloud kitchen, packaged snacks |
Treat the placement as a starting guess, and collect two or three quotations before you fix a budget. Tarun Plus is open only to borrowers who have repaid a Tarun loan earlier, as the Finance Ministry's Mudra note of October 2024 sets out. Longer lists for each level sit under low-investment business ideas and business ideas under ₹10 lakh.
Which skill-led ideas can you run from home without a machine?
These ideas need a laptop, a phone and a few paying clients, and you win on reliability.
- Bookkeeping and return filing: Small traders need it every month, so one client can bring repeat income.
- Online tutoring or exam coaching: Start with one subject you teach well and a batch you can fill through word of mouth.
- Social media and digital marketing for local shops: Offer a fixed monthly package to shops that already know you.
- Graphic design and video editing: Build a small portfolio from one real local brand before you pitch strangers.
- Tiffin service: This is a food business, so the registration rules further down apply from the first meal sold.
Which small-scale manufacturing ideas need the least machinery?
The seven products below run on simple machines that many suppliers sell. What usually decides the outcome sits in the last two columns, the input you must secure and the first thing to check.
| Product | Main equipment | Input to secure | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton wicks | Wick-making machine | Cotton | Whether pooja-material shops and candle makers near you buy in bulk |
| Candles | Melting pot and moulds, or a candle machine | Wax, wicks, fragrance | Fire safety in the workspace and a steady fragrance supplier |
| Incense sticks | Mixing and stick-coating machine, drying racks | Bamboo sticks, fragrance base | Drying space, and a brand a retailer will stock |
| Areca leaf plates | Heated press with plate dies | Areca leaf sheaths | Supply of sheaths within a short haul of the unit |
| Jute bags | Stitching machines, cutting table | Jute fabric, handles, printing | Retailers and event organisers who want a plastic alternative |
| Pickles and papad | Cutting, mixing and drying equipment, a clean room | Vegetables, spices, oil | Food registration before the first sale |
| Cold-pressed oil | Oil expeller and filter | Oilseeds | A buyer for the leftover oil cake |
Product lists with machinery for each industry sit in the manufacturing ideas section.
Does a small food business still need an FSSAI licence in 2026?
Often it does not. Under the FSSAI order of 13 March 2026, which took effect on 1 April 2026, your yearly turnover decides the permission you need.
| Yearly turnover | Permission needed |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹1.5 crore | Registration |
| ₹1.5 crore-₹50 crore | State licence |
| Above ₹50 crore | Central licence |
Guides written before 2026 still push small units towards a licence. Registrations and licences now stay valid without yearly renewal, according to FSSAI's FAQ memo of 27 March 2026. Dairy, meat, packaged drinking water, infant food and fishery businesses must still meet their hygiene, safety and testing requirements despite the higher limit. A home bakery, pickle maker or snack unit should register on FSSAI's FoSCoS portal before the first sale. More options are listed under food processing business ideas.
Mudra or PMEGP: which funding route suits a small business?
Register on the government's Udyam portal first. It is free and paperless. Nearly every idea on this page counts as a micro enterprise, which since 1 April 2025 means investment in plant and equipment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore. Then compare the two main routes.
| Route | Suits | Ceiling | What you get | Apply through |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (Mudra) | Non-corporate, non-farm micro and small enterprises | ₹20 lakh (Tarun Plus) | A loan, with credit guarantee cover | Banks, small finance banks, non-bank finance companies, microfinance lenders, or the Udyamimitra portal |
| Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) | New non-farm micro units in manufacturing or services | ₹50 lakh for manufacturing, ₹20 lakh for services | A bank loan plus a subsidy of 15%-35% of project cost, set by category and area | Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), state boards or the district industries centre |
The PMEGP ceilings and subsidy rates come from the Ministry of MSME's PIB factsheet of February 2025. The scheme's last announced cycle ran to 2025-26, and the Ministry said in May 2026 that it will strengthen PMEGP in the next cycle, so confirm the current guidelines on the PMEGP portal before you plan around the subsidy.
How do you pick one small business idea from a long list?
Put each shortlisted idea through three tests before any money moves.
- Name ten buyers. A machine makes goods, not orders. List ten real buyers, ask what they pay today and who supplies them now.
- Check the input. Areca plates need areca sheaths, oil mills need oilseeds, a jute unit needs a dependable fabric supplier. If the input sits far away, freight eats the margin before the first sale.
- Budget for the wait. Retailers and institutions often pay weeks after delivery, so set aside money for stock and credit as well as for the machine.
Ordering the machine first is the usual mistake.
What should you do in the first two weeks after choosing?
- Shortlist two ideas from the tables above and run the ten-buyer test on both.
- For a manufacturing idea, collect two or three machine quotations and watch one working demonstration.
- Register on Udyam. If the idea involves food, register on FoSCoS as well.
- Work out the monthly sales you need with the margin formula in the questions below.
- Take the cost sheet, quotations and Udyam registration to a bank, and check current PMEGP guidelines if you want a subsidy.

Frequently asked questions about small business ideas in India
Which is the most profitable small business in India?
No single business wins everywhere. Profit depends on your margin, how steadily you sell and what you owe every month. Shortlist two or three ideas, ask buyers and suppliers for real prices, and compare what is left after costs.
How can you start a business with ₹50,000?
Choose an idea that sells your time or a home-made product, such as tutoring, bookkeeping, digital marketing, tiffin service or pickles, and skip machines. Sell to ten known buyers first and register on Udyam, and with FSSAI for food. The Mudra Shishu tier covers loans up to ₹50,000.
How can you earn ₹2 lakh a month from a small business?
Work backwards from the target: monthly sales needed = (profit target + fixed costs) ÷ margin. For a ₹2,00,000 profit with ₹50,000 of fixed costs and a 25% margin, sales must reach ₹10,00,000 a month. Those inputs are illustrative; use quotations from your own suppliers and buyers.
Can a home-based business get a Mudra loan?
Yes, if it is a non-corporate, non-farm micro or small enterprise, which includes a sole proprietor working from home. Apply through a bank, non-bank finance company or microfinance lender, or the Udyamimitra portal, with supplier quotations and a simple cash-flow plan.
Which small business suits a village or small town?
Pick one that uses a local input or local demand, such as food processing, bags, plates or oil from local produce. The village business ideas page lists options by rural setting.
