- Frequently asked questions about mackintosh sheet manufacturing
Mackintosh sheet manufacturing means coating cotton fabric with natural rubber on both faces, curing it with heat and selling the waterproof result as hospital rubber sheet, usually in rolls 90 cm to 1.1 m wide. Hospitals spread it under a cotton bed sheet to protect mattresses.
The plant is built around one machine, the calender, which presses rubber onto fabric. The Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) project report that models sheets together with surgical gloves puts that combined plant at ₹75 lakh, so a sheets-only start should cost less. Delhi sellers list finished sheeting at about ₹65 to ₹180 a metre, which means profit comes from keeping the calender full and the thickness even, not from a premium price.
Start with sheets. Add surgical gloves only when sheets sell steadily.
What does a mackintosh sheet manufacturing plant cost?
In the NPCS project report on surgical hand gloves and mackintosh sheets, machinery is about half of the ₹75 lakh capital.
| Item | Figure in the NPCS report |
|---|---|
| Mackintosh sheets | 70 rolls a day, each 90 cm by 10 m |
| Surgical hand gloves | 1,200 pairs a day |
| Plant and machinery | ₹38 lakh |
| Total capital investment | ₹75 lakh |
| Return | 27% |
| Break-even | 76% |
Seventy rolls come to about 630 square metres a day. The published summary does not split the ₹75 lakh between sheets and gloves, so read it as a ceiling for sheets alone. Calender width and new versus reconditioned machines move the machinery figure most, so quote for your target width first.
What is the price of a mackintosh sheet per metre?
Delhi sellers on IndiaMART quote ₹65 to ₹180 a metre, and the price does not track thickness or width cleanly. Eight of the 20 listings on the Delhi page fall in that range; a ninth, ₹1,899 for a 10 m sheet, is left out.
| Listing as described | Price as listed |
|---|---|
| 0.35 mm, 0.9 m wide, rubberised fabric | ₹65 a metre |
| Natural rubber, 2 mm thick | ₹80 a metre |
| 100 cm by 10 m, 400 g | ₹154 a metre |
| Double-faced, 0.9 m wide, rubberised fabric | ₹179 a metre |
These are dealer asking prices, and some listings quote per piece, so quote per metre with width and thickness stated. Government buyers look at grade. Government e-Marketplace (GeM) entries that cite Indian Standard IS 4135:1974 for hospital rubber sheetings describe Grade A as 500 g per square metre with at least 350 g of rubber, and Grade B as 350 g with at least 200 g. Grade A carries 150 g more rubber per square metre, so cost per metre rises with grade before thickness changes.
Where are mackintosh sheets used, and what must they survive?
Three kinds of buyer set the specification you build to.
| Use | What the sheet has to handle |
|---|---|
| Hospital wards and theatres | Disinfectants, detergents, phenol and xylol, and autoclaving |
| Government supply | A cited standard, grade, finished mass, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) marking and a lab report on request |
| Home use for bed-wetting | Mild soap washing, drying away from sunlight, no contact with oil or wax |
How is hospital rubber sheeting made, step by step?
- Mix the compound. Soften natural rubber on a two-roll mill and blend in sulphur, activators, fillers and pigments.
- Coat the first face. The calender rolls apply heat and pressure that fuse fabric and rubber into one composite.
- Coat the second face in a different colour. Sheeting is usually blue or green on one side and red on the other.
- Dust with talc to remove surface tack.
- Vulcanise the rolls with heat so the rubber turns elastic and waterproof.
- Inspect, weigh a sample per square metre against the grade, and roll to length.
Spread coating is the other route: rubber dissolved in solvent is knifed onto the fabric and dried in an oven. Calendering needs no solvent and no drying step, so a new plant is better off with a calender.
Which machines does a mackintosh sheet plant need?
The mill and the calender decide the budget.
| Machine | What it does |
|---|---|
| Two-roll mixing mill | Softens rubber and blends in chemicals and pigment |
| Calender | Presses compound onto each face of the fabric |
| Fabric unwind and wind-up stands | Feed cotton through and roll the coated cloth |
| Talc dusting unit | Stops layers sticking |
| Vulcanising chamber with boiler | Cures the rolls with heat |
| Inspection table, balance and thickness gauge | Check defects, length, mass and thickness |
The NPCS cost sheet lists indigenous machinery, imported machinery, laboratory equipment and erection separately, which is a sensible way to ask suppliers to quote.
Which raw materials and which IS 4135 grade should you plan for?
Natural rubber, cotton fabric and compounding chemicals are the inputs. The Rubber Board's executive director said on 7 October 2026 that India produced 9.05 lakh tonnes of natural rubber in 2025-26 against 8.75 lakh tonnes the year before, while use in 2024-25 was 14.10 lakh tonnes (UNI India report). A plant this size buys a small share of that, so the risk is price, not supply. For compounding basics, see the rubber processing business guide.
The base cotton in GeM entries weighs at most 90 g per square metre. The specification buyers cite is IS 4135:1974, which BIS lists as reaffirmed and not taken up for revision. Buy the standard text from BIS before fixing your compound; the grade figures here come from entries that cite it.
Should you add surgical gloves to a mackintosh sheet plant?
Not at the start. Gloves are a separate process: formers are dipped in latex, then the film is cured and stripped, so the line shares little with a calender. IS 13422:2024 covers single-use sterile surgical gloves in natural rubber latex or synthetic materials, so you also need a sterilisation route.
The draft Medical and Surgical Gloves (Quality Control) Order would make BIS certification compulsory for surgical, examination and post-mortem gloves, according to Deccan Herald's report on its World Trade Organization filing in March 2025. Trade press still called it a draft in May 2025, so check with BIS whether it is in force before costing a glove line. Apply the project identification test: add gloves once sheets sell steadily and the gloves have their own buyer.
What are the main risks in mackintosh sheet manufacturing?
- Price competition. Dealer prices run from ₹65 to ₹180 a metre, and the NPCS model breaks even at 76% of capacity.
- Material confusion. Sellers list PVC sheets under the same name.
- Boiler and pollution consent. Ask your State Pollution Control Board which category applies. The Odisha board's lists carry an entry for rubber goods units using fuel other than gas or electric boilers.
- Unit mix-ups. Listings mix per-metre, per-piece and per-roll prices, so a buyer can misread your quote.
What should you do before ordering a calender?
- Choose one grade and one width, then get calender, mill and boiler quotes for it.
- Read the GeM entries for your grade to see what buyers specify.
- Ask your State Pollution Control Board about consent for your boiler fuel.
- Cost one metre: rubber by grade, fabric, chemicals, power and labour, then compare it with ₹65 to ₹180.
- Put the figures in a detailed project report and check MSME schemes for finance.
Compare this with other products in pharma and medical manufacturing ideas before committing.
An NPCS project report on this product covers the market survey, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw material costs, working capital, break-even and cash flow, in the format banks usually ask for. NPCS has prepared more than 5,000 project reports since 1994, and a report does not replace supplier quotes.
Frequently asked questions about mackintosh sheet manufacturing
Is a BIS mark compulsory for hospital rubber sheeting?
Not on the orders we found. A BIS standard turns compulsory only through a quality control order, and the draft gloves order names gloves, not sheeting. GeM entries for IS 4135 sheeting answer the BIS marking field both yes and no, so confirm the position with BIS before launch.
Is a PVC sheet the same as a rubber mackintosh sheet?
No. IS 4135 covers hospital rubber sheeting, which is fabric proofed with natural rubber. Sellers also list PVC sheets as mackintosh sheets, for example a 0.25 mm orange PVC sheet on TradeIndia. Decide which material you make and say so on every quote.
What roll size should a new plant make?
Listings cluster at 90 cm and 1.1 m widths. Dealers sell 10 m rolls and GeM entries describe 30 to 35 m rolls. The NPCS report models 90 cm by 10 m rolls. Start with one width and one length per grade, and add sizes when orders ask for them.
Is mackintosh sheet manufacturing profitable?
It can be near full capacity. The NPCS report models a 27% return on a ₹75 lakh combined plant with break-even at 76% of capacity. Dealer prices from ₹65 to ₹180 a metre show how far buyers shop around, so cost each grade separately.
