Most people who want to start camphor manufacturing in India end up running a tablet unit. They buy camphor powder, press it into tablets, pack 100 g packets and sell to puja-item shops and wholesalers. The project profile from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) puts such a unit at ₹7.47 lakh in total, of which ₹3.54 lakh is machinery.

Making the powder itself is a different business: a chemical process that starts from a pine-derived feedstock and runs at plant scale. The tablet route has a catch of its own. In the same profile, a unit that sells ₹56.86 lakh of tablets in its first year keeps ₹1.80 lakh before tax. The sections below show where the money goes and what has to be true for the margin to improve.

Tablet unit or powder plant: which camphor business are you starting?

The two routes share a product name and little else, so choose before pricing anything.

Natural camphor, steam-distilled from camphor laurel wood, is the original source. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, synthetic camphor from alpha-pinene has been industrial practice since the early 1930s. If the powder route interests you, aroma chemicals manufacturing is the closest chemical-route guide on this site. The rest of this page covers the tablet unit.

How are camphor tablets made, step by step?

The KVIC profile describes a dry, mechanical process with no chemical reaction.

  1. Receive camphor powder and the other materials in the formulation, such as hexamine and wax, and store them in a dry room.
  2. Mix the powder with those materials in the fixed proportion.
  3. Feed the mix into the press hopper.
  4. Press the mix into tablets in the die.
  5. Pack the tablets, 100 g to a packet, on the packing machine.
  6. Dispatch to dealers.

The profile gives no mixing ratio. Settle it with a laboratory test before the first batch, because it decides how the tablet burns and what the pack can truthfully say.

Which machines does a camphor tablet unit need?

The profile prices three presses and two packers and picks the largest of each.

MachineOptions in the profile (₹)Output or role
Tablet press, die-based5-die 60,000; 10-12 die 90,000; 20-die 1,45,000 (picked)6-8, 12-15 and 20-25 kg an hour
Packing machineManual 22,000; automatic 1,55,000 (picked)Packs the 100 g packets
Genset, 5 KVA40,000Standby power for a 3 KVA load

Year-one volume in the profile is 79,800 packets, or 7,980 kg: about 27 kg a day over 300 working days (7,980 ÷ 300). Year five is about 42 kg a day. A 5-die press gives 48 to 64 kg in an 8-hour shift (assumed), so the profile's own volumes never need the 20-die press. Buy a smaller press first and let dealer reorders justify the upgrade.

What does a camphor tablet unit cost, and is it profitable?

These are KVIC figures, and the profile is undated, so reprice every line before showing it to a bank.

Item₹ lakh
Plant and machinery (with 18% GST)3.54
Furniture, fixtures and genset0.60
Working capital3.33
Total project cost7.47

The profile assumes 10% own money and 90% bank finance.

Year 1Year 5
Capacity used35%55%
Sales (₹ lakh)56.86105.37
Profit before tax (₹ lakh)1.806.17
Profit as % of sales3.2%5.9%

The percentages come from 1.80 ÷ 56.86 and 6.17 ÷ 105.37. Packets sell at ₹75 per 100 g, or ₹750 a kg, against a blended material cost of ₹600 a kg. That 20% gap is mostly consumed by wages, rent, interest and 5% wastage.

Cash is the other squeeze. Raw material costs ₹50.40 lakh in year one, about ₹4.2 lakh a month (50.40 ÷ 12), while the profile finances ₹3.33 lakh of working capital. Each extra week of dealer credit widens that gap. The numbers support a thin-margin business that improves with volume, not large profit from a small machine.

Where does camphor powder come from, and who supplies it?

Powder is the main cost, at ₹800 to ₹1,000 a kg in the profile, with hexamine at ₹130 to ₹180 a kg. It is a pine-chemical product, so its price follows feedstock cost. Mangalam Organics, which calls itself one of the largest Indian camphor manufacturers, cited raw-material price swings when its profit fell in the first quarter of FY2021-22. Per an Arihant Capital company profile, Mangalam has sold its own camphor tablets since 2013, so a powder supplier may also be your competitor on the shelf.

Get three quotes, ask for a test report against the BIS camphor specification, IS 3584:2007, and keep no more stock than you can sell in a few weeks.

Which licences and approvals does a camphor unit need?

RequirementWhat it means for you
Udyam (Udyog Aadhar) and GST registrationBoth are listed in the KVIC profile, and registration is the entry point to MSME schemes
Brand name and trademarkListed in the profile; register the trademark if you will sell under your own brand
Packaging declarationsThe Legal Metrology packaged-commodity rules require the maker's name and address, net quantity, MRP and month and year of manufacture on packs (PIB, July 2024)
BISIS 3584:2007 is the BIS camphor specification; its record does not state a certification requirement, so ask a BIS office before printing any BIS claim on a pack
Local permissionsTrade licence and fire-office advice vary by city; camphor burns easily, so ask before signing a lease

Can PMEGP fund a camphor tablet unit?

At ₹7.47 lakh, the unit is well under the PMEGP manufacturing ceiling of ₹50 lakh for applicants above 8th standard. Ganjam district's PMEGP page lists the margin-money subsidy as 15% (urban) or 25% (rural) for general applicants with 10% own contribution, and 25% or 35% for special categories with 5%, plus a mandatory 10-day training. For a general urban applicant, 15% of ₹7.47 lakh is about ₹1.1 lakh. The page carries no scheme dates, so confirm current rates on the PMEGP portal before applying. Banks will ask for a project report; how a project report is structured explains the format.

Who buys camphor tablets, and how do you reach them?

Demand follows the puja calendar. Early buyers are puja-item wholesalers and general stores, and the 100 g pack in the profile suits them. Pair the tablet with items the same shopkeeper stocks, such as cotton wicks. Five dealers who reorder every month are worth more than fifty who buy once.

Frequently asked questions

What is the raw material for camphor?

Natural camphor comes from the wood of the camphor laurel (Cinnamomum camphora), steam-distilled and purified by sublimation. Synthetic camphor starts from alpha-pinene, a pine-derived chemical. A tablet unit buys finished powder instead, plus materials such as hexamine and wax, per the KVIC profile.

Why is camphor costly?

Natural extraction needs steam distillation and purification by sublimation, and the synthetic route needs plant-scale chemical processing from a feedstock whose price moves. Mangalam Organics has itself cited raw-material price fluctuation.

Who is the largest camphor producer in India?

I found no official ranking. Mangalam Organics describes itself as one of the largest Indian camphor manufacturers and also sells its own tablets. Check each producer's latest annual report before quoting a capacity figure.

Can I start a camphor tablet business at home?

The profile assumes 500 sq ft of rented space and a 3 KVA load. A small press and packer can fit a spare room, but camphor has a strong smell and burns readily, so keep stock in a separate, ventilated room away from any flame, and still register for GST and Udyam.

What should you do in the next 30 days?

  1. Get quotes from three powder suppliers and two press makers, then rebuild the KVIC cost table with today's prices.
  2. Fix the formulation with a laboratory test on a small trial batch.
  3. Register under Udyam and GST, then check PMEGP eligibility with your District Industries Centre.
  4. Sell to five dealers for a month and log how many days each takes to pay.

If the tablet margin looks too thin, compare it with other ideas in the pharma sector or with manufacturing ideas under ₹10 lakh.
