Alkyd resin manufacturing means cooking vegetable oil, a polyalcohol and phthalic anhydride together in a heated reactor, thinning the result with solvent and filling drums for paint makers. One reactor is enough to start. The sample profile from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) shows a 1.8-tonne-a-day unit costing ₹36.65 lakh including working capital, while the project report from Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) for a 5-tonne-a-day plant shows total capital investment of ₹776 lakh. The gap comes from capacity, land, building, utilities and the oil stock you must carry.

Whatever the scale, three things decide whether the plant survives: a paint maker who will approve your batches, a reactor and solvent store that are safe to run, and enough working capital to buy oil before you are paid. Settle the buyer first.

Who buys alkyd resin, and how big is that market?

Alkyd resin is the binder in solvent-based paints, varnishes and enamels, the part that dries into a film. Your customers are paint manufacturers, so the market is factories, not shops. India's paint industry was valued at ₹93,094 crore in 2025 and is projected to reach ₹1,45,782 crore by 2030, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation. The same page notes that makers are developing water-based coatings, a slow threat to any solvent-based resin plant.

We found no official figure for alkyd resin alone, so use paint production near your site as the proxy: list the factories within a day's truck ride and ask what they buy. Compare the plan with other chemical manufacturing ideas before you commit.

How is alkyd resin made, step by step?

The KVIC profile, written for the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), recommends the two-stage solvent process over single-stage and fusion routes because it gives a more uniform, lighter-coloured product with less material loss. Its steps, with detail from a 2022 study in the World Chemical Engineering Journal:

  1. Charge the reactor with drying oil (linseed oil in the profile), a polyalcohol (pentaerythritol) and a little catalyst (litharge).
  2. Heat to about 240 to 260°C for alcoholysis, which turns oil and polyalcohol into a monoglyceride. The profile allows 40 minutes to 4 hours; a sample dissolving in methanol marks the end.
  3. Add phthalic anhydride and 5 to 10% solvent, which refluxes inside the reactor. Water formed in the reaction leaves with the solvent vapour, is split off in the condenser and separator, and the solvent returns.
  4. Continue the esterification until acid value has fallen and viscosity has risen to the grade you are making. The chemist, not the clock, decides the endpoint.
  5. Pump the hot resin to the blender, thin it with solvent to the supply specification and pass it through a sparkler filter.
  6. Test the batch and fill drums.

Which machines does an alkyd resin plant need, and how much space and power?

The profile's ₹24.65 lakh of machinery, grouped by job, at its own dated rates:

MachineWhat it doesKVIC profile estimate
ReactorCooks the batch₹7.5 lakh
Main condenser, separator, vent condenserReturn solvent, remove water₹3.5 lakh
Thermic fluid heating systemHeats the reactor₹2.75 lakh
Blender and addition tankThins and doses₹1.5 lakh
Resin and oil pumps, sparkler filterMoves and polishes resin₹1.5 lakh
Cooling tower and pumpCools condensers₹3 lakh
Standby generatorBackup power₹2.25 lakh
Water hydrantFire fighting₹1 lakh
Product tank, scale, toolsStorage, weighing, tools₹1.65 lakh

The profile assumes 30 HP of connected load, nine staff and a site of 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft covering stock, manufacturing, utilities, generator and office. With drums of solvent on site, we would treat that area as the minimum.

What does an alkyd resin manufacturing plant cost?

Two published scales show the range. The KVIC total excludes land and includes ₹10 lakh of working capital.

ItemKVIC profileNPCS project report
Capacity1,800 kg a day5 tonnes a day
Plant and machinery₹24.65 lakh₹157 lakh
Total investment₹36.65 lakh₹776 lakh
ReturnNot stated46%
Break-evenNot stated44%

At full capacity the annual bill is ₹542.23 lakh, of which linseed oil is ₹360 lakh, phthalic anhydride ₹97.5 lakh and pentaerythritol ₹72 lakh. Oil is about two-thirds of the bill (our calculation), so margin follows the oil price.

The profile assumes 40% utilisation in year one, rising to 60% in year five. Even at 40%, the raw material bill tops ₹2 crore a year (our calculation), so its ₹10 lakh of working capital covers only two to three weeks of purchases. Plan for more, especially if buyers pay on credit, and replace the profile's old rates with fresh quotations.

Which approvals and safety rules apply to a solvent-based resin plant?

The KVIC profile lists GST registration (required), MSME registration (optional), trademark registration if you brand the resin, and a no-objection certificate from the State Pollution Control Board. Ask the board which consent category your process falls in before you pay for land, because its answer can change your site choice.

Solvent storage needs the most care. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) publishes FAQs on the Petroleum Rules, 2002 that exempt Class B liquids (flash point from 23°C to below 65°C) below 2,500 litres and require a district-authority licence from 2,500 to 25,000 litres. The FAQs do not name xylene or mineral turpentine oil, so check your solvent's flash point and confirm its class with the PESO office. Fire clearance and the factory licence are state matters, so ask your industrial estate office.

How will a lender read an alkyd resin project?

The KVIC profile funds its ₹36.65 lakh with ₹3.65 lakh of own money, a ₹24 lakh term loan and a ₹9 lakh working capital loan. A lender will look for written interest from paint makers, an approved site and a working capital plan that survives the slow ramp-up. The guide to a detailed project report and the note on MSME schemes show what the document and the schemes expect.

NPCS has consulted on industrial projects since 1994 and has prepared more than 5,000 project reports across 40+ sectors, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP and Mudra typically ask for. Acceptance remains the lender's decision.

What goes wrong in a resin plant's first year?

Oil price swings: with oil at about two-thirds of input cost, agree price-review terms with buyers.

Rejected batches: a paint maker approves a grade by testing it, so keep a retained sample and the test values of every batch.

Solvent fire: the reactor holds hot oil and flammable solvent. Fit cooling and fire water before adding capacity.

Shift to water-based coatings: do not tie all capital to one grade.

What should you do before buying a reactor?

  1. Visit paint makers in delivery range and ask which alkyd grades they buy, at what specification and volume.
  2. Get written quotes for oil, pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride from two suppliers each.
  3. Ask the State Pollution Control Board and your industrial estate which approvals your site needs.
  4. Collect reactor and heating system quotations and compare them with the KVIC figures above.

If the numbers still work, the next document is a project report. An NPCS project report on alkyd resin covers capacity, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, manpower, land and building, and financials including cost of project, working capital, cost of production, break-even and cash flow. It cannot replace step 1. If you are not ready for a full report, the guide to a feasibility study shows what to test first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between short, medium and long oil alkyd resin?

Oil length is the share of oil in the resin. Longer oil generally gives a softer, more flexible film and shorter oil a harder one. Ask your first buyer which grade they use before planning any formulation.

How long does one alkyd resin batch take?

The KVIC profile gives 40 minutes to 4 hours for the first stage alone. The second stage has no fixed time, because the chemist stops it when acid value and viscosity tests say so. Cooling, thinning and filtering come on top, so ask your reactor supplier for a cycle time per grade.

Can alkyd resin be made from used cooking oil?

A 2022 study in the World Chemical Engineering Journal made a short oil alkyd from pretreated used cooking oil, but only in 50-gram laboratory batches. It does not show that a paint maker would accept the colour and consistency at plant scale, so treat it as research.

Is alkyd resin the same as epoxy or polyester resin?

No. An alkyd is a polyester modified with oil or fatty acids, which is why drying types can cure in air as a paint binder. Epoxy resin is a different chemistry, covered in the guide to epoxy resin manufacturing.

Editor notes

Mode run: full (page is P3). Inputs taken from the URL list row: primary keyword 'alkyd resin manufacturing', parent hub /manufacturing-ideas/chemical/, CURRENT_MONTH_YEAR October 2026.

Intent: mixed. Top results are machinery sellers and report sellers plus one official profile, so the page stays informational and answers the cost question with two sourced scales.

Not used: rival consultancy figures (IMARC, EIRI). CPCB category lists could not be read, so pollution approvals are described through the KVIC profile only. Current PMEGP and Mudra limits were not confirmed, so no scheme numbers appear.
