What is Plastic Dip Coating?
Plastic Dip coating is a process where liquefied plastic or liquid polymer is applied to a workspace, in this article’s context to MS material, i.e Mild Steel Material by dipping it. Thus, the name Plastic Dip Coating.
Plastic Dip Coating is used for two reasons,
- For decorative reasons
- For Protection.
Now the first reason is pretty self-explanatory, so; let’s talk about the second reason. Protection. Plastic coating increases the Mild Steel’s durability. It makes it scratch resistant, corrosion resistant. It also stops it from wearing down and protects from external elements. Plastic dip coating also increases the lifespan of its wearer, i.e Mild Steel Material in this article.

What is Plastic Dip Coating Applied to?
Plastic Dip Coating is mostly applied to tools and their handles and grips. It is also used in handles, covers, and carts, cables wires, digital probes, forcep, basket, caps, plugs, tongs, Spatula and many other things. Plastic Coating is a great insulator of heat and electricity, so it is a natural choice for coating wires and cables. And due to it being heat resistant, it is used to coat objects used to handle hot things, such as tongs and spatulas.

As you can see, above is a posturized version of the process.
The process starts with…
- Removal of Surface Impurities.
It is important to remove all the pollutants on the surface, if they are not taken out, the adhesiveness of the plastic will be weak. This is done in and by two steps.
- Degreasing: As the word suggests, degreasing is a process to take away grease from the MS material. The oil and grease on the metal are adhesive’s worst enemies. By degreasing we take care of them.
- Stripping: Yeah, we basically strip the mild steel. We need to take off the old coat to add a new coat.
- Pre-heating.
Now after the above part is done, we preheat the mould at a pre decided time and heat. The preheating process is one of the reasons that decides the thickness of the coating.

- Dipping
Once the mould is preheated, it’s time for the main event. Dipping literally means dipping the mould into Liquid plastic or polymer. As I mentioned above, the thickness of the coating has two main reasons, one being the preheating time the mould took, second is how long it stays in the liquid polymer.
Once the mould is completely coated, the excess liquid polymer is drained. At this point it is still wet and cannot be touched directly. To make it completely dry and usable, we do the next step.
Once the excess liquid polymer is removed, the mould is then put back in the oven to cure. To cure, basically means, to dry the wet plastic coating and to remove all the extra moisture, additives and solvents.
Now the only thing left to do is let the tools and utensils cool down.
And that’s how plastic dip coating is applied on MS or Mild Steel Material.
Indian Market for Plastic Dip Coating and Business opportunity.
The Indian Plastic dip coating market has a lot of heavy hitters such as Raychem, Kwality Paints and Berger Paints India PVT Ltd. To start a business in this arena is a brave yet crazy decision. Not only are these companies extremely dominating the industry but the smaller and local businesses have tightly closed all the gates to enter, even local. So is there a way to enter this already jam packed race? Yes there is a long route. But as the saying goes, “There is no short cut to Success.”
Even when heavy hitters like Kwality Paints have entered the market, many local and small businesses are still in profit. Why? Because these businesses have an advantage that because of its business size, Kwality Paints don’t have.
