What is a virgin coconut oil project report?
A virgin coconut oil project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that takes oil from fresh coconut kernel by mechanical or natural means, with no refining. It covers the process, machinery, coconut supply, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender checks.
Entrepreneurs and coconut farmer groups use it to size the unit and apply for a term loan, PMEGP or PMFME; lenders use it to judge repayment.
Also known as: VCO project report, virgin coconut oil business plan, project report on virgin coconut oil, DPR for a virgin coconut oil unit.
What a bank checks in a virgin coconut oil project report
A credit officer reads a virgin coconut oil report for four numbers. Each one below is the value used in our sample report, with the reason it matters.
Coconuts are the main cost. A report showing a much lower share is usually using an old nut price or an oil yield that a fresh-kernel unit cannot reach.
Retail bottles sell far higher than bulk oil in drums. Lenders want the price backed by buyer quotes for your sales mix, not by shop prices.
DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) shows how many times profit covers the loan instalment. Banks look at the weakest year, not only the average of 1.95.
Nut supply dips in lean months. A low break-even shows the unit can still cover its costs when it runs well below plan.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, coconut source and buyers.
Virgin coconut oil manufacturing plant cost in India
Cost depends on how many nuts you process a day and how you separate the oil. Micro units use a VCO cooker or fermentation tanks; larger units move to a centrifuge and vacuum dryer. The third tier is the unit in our sample report.

Micro and small ranges are indicative and exclude land unless stated. Costs vary with location, process route and machine make.
Virgin coconut oil manufacturing process
Virgin coconut oil is made from coconut milk pressed out of fresh kernel, not from dried copra. The sample report follows the wet process with a centrifuge, which suits a unit handling thousands of nuts a day.
- Nut selection and deshelling
Only fully mature nuts of 11 to 12 months are used; they are dehusked and the shell is removed without breaking the kernel.
- Paring and blanching
The brown testa is pared off, and ICAR-CPCRI blanches the kernel pieces in water at 50°C for 5 minutes to stop enzyme action.
- Grinding and milk extraction
The kernel is pulverised and pressed in a screw expeller. A second pass with about 250 ml of warm water per kg of residue recovers more milk.
- Chilling
The milk is chilled for a few hours so the cream separates and the oil breaks out more easily.
- Centrifugal separation
A tubular bowl centrifuge spins the milk at high speed and splits it into oil, water and protein.
- Low-temperature drying
A vacuum dryer removes the last moisture below 60°C, because oil heated past about 65°C turns yellow and sells as a lower grade.
- Filtration and packing
The oil is polished through micron filters and filled in glass or PET bottles for retail and in drums for bulk buyers.
Hot process, fermentation or centrifuge: which route to choose
The route decides your machinery bill, oil yield and the grade you can sell. ICAR-CPCRI has published trial figures for the first three; the yields below are its figures as a share of fresh kernel weight.
| Hot process | Coconut cream is heated slowly in a double-jacketed VCO cooker until the oil separates. Yield is about 20–22% of kernel weight. Direct or uneven heat gives yellow oil. |
|---|---|
| Fermentation | Milk stands for 20 to 24 hours at 35–40°C and the oil layer is drawn off. Yield is about 16–18%. Equipment is cheapest, but the process is slow and needs strict hygiene to avoid off-odours. |
| Centrifuge | Chilled, diluted milk is separated in a tubular bowl centrifuge. It is quick and consistent, and suits larger units, but has the highest machinery cost of the three. |
| Dry process | Fresh kernel is dried at low temperature and the oil is pressed out in an expeller. It skips the milk stage, but drying must stay gentle so the oil stays clear and keeps its fresh aroma. |
Yields are from ICAR-CPCRI bulletins (2010 and 2016) and vary with nut quality and plant practice.
Coconuts needed and raw material cost
Fresh, fully mature coconuts are the only major input. ICAR-CPCRI trials report about 20–25 litres of virgin coconut oil from 500 nuts, so plan on roughly 20 to 25 nuts per litre. At full capacity, the sample unit would need about 11,000 to 14,000 nuts a day.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh mature coconuts | 94% | 336.85 |
| Filter aids and process consumables | 6% | 21.50 |
| Total | 100% | 358.35 |
The sample counts no income from by-products. Coconut water, shells, paring and milk residue can all be sold, which a report for your unit can include.
Machinery for a virgin coconut oil unit
The centrifuge is the most expensive item in the sample line, followed by the milk expeller. Every part that touches kernel, milk or oil should be food-grade stainless steel.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Dehusking and deshelling machines | Remove husk and shell, keep the kernel whole | 7.51 |
| Testa paring machines | Pare the brown skin off the kernel | 5.26 |
| Kernel washer and pulveriser | Wash and grind the white kernel | 7.51 |
| Screw type coconut milk expeller | Press milk out of the ground kernel | 11.27 |
| Milk chiller and settling tanks | Cool and hold milk before separation | 7.51 |
| Tubular bowl centrifuge | Separate oil from water and protein | 15.02 |
| Vacuum dryer for oil | Remove moisture at low temperature | 9.01 |
| Filter press and micron cartridge filters | Polish the oil to a clear finish | 4.51 |
| Bottle filling and capping machine | Fill retail bottles | 7.51 |
| Total plant and machinery | 75.11 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates for a 550 litres per day line. Get current quotations before you finalise.
Licences and quality standards for virgin coconut oil

Loans and subsidies for a virgin coconut oil unit
A micro unit can use a subsidy scheme; a unit the size of our sample usually takes an MSME term loan with a 25% promoter share.
PMEGP
Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakhMargin-money subsidy of 15–35% for new units, depending on category and area. Suits a micro unit on the hot or fermentation route.
PMFME
35% of eligible cost, up to ₹10 lakhCredit-linked capital subsidy for individual micro food processing units. The promoter's own share is 10% of project cost.
Technology Mission on Coconut
Back-ended, credit-linked subsidyCoconut Development Board support for coconut processing units, released through the lending bank in stages. Rates depend on who applies.
Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank, the scheme portal or the Coconut Development Board before applying.
Mistakes that weaken a virgin coconut oil project report
- Borrowing yields from copra oil reports
Copra is dried kernel and its oil yield per nut is not comparable. A fresh-kernel unit needs about 20 to 25 nuts a litre, and a copra-based yield understates how many nuts you must buy.
- Pricing all output at retail rates
Small retail bottles sell at a high price, but much of the output usually goes in drums to brands. Revenue should follow your real mix of bulk and branded sales.
- Leaving out drying and testing costs
Oil with moisture turns rancid, and oil dried too hot turns yellow. A vacuum dryer and a small lab for moisture, acid value and peroxide value belong in the cost.
- No plan for coconut water and residue
A unit cutting over 10,000 nuts a day drains a lot of coconut water and wet residue. Without a buyer or a treatment plan they become a disposal cost.

Virgin Coconut Oil project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to set up a virgin coconut oil plant in India?
A micro unit on the hot or fermentation process needs roughly ₹25–60 lakh. A 200–400 litres per day centrifuge unit costs about ₹80–140 lakh. Our sample 550 litres per day unit costs ₹172 lakh, including land, building and working capital margin. These figures are indicative; your project report works out the cost for your capacity, process and location.
How many coconuts are needed for 1 litre of virgin coconut oil?
About 20 to 25 fully mature coconuts. ICAR-CPCRI trials report roughly 20–25 litres of virgin coconut oil from 500 nuts, depending on kernel weight and the process used. The hot process recovers more oil from the kernel than fermentation. A project report should state the yield it assumes, because it drives the coconut budget.
What is the difference between virgin coconut oil and ordinary coconut oil?
Virgin coconut oil is taken from fresh kernel, usually through coconut milk, and is never refined, bleached or deodorised. Ordinary coconut oil is pressed from dried copra and is often refined. FSSAI has a separate standard for virgin coconut oil, and buyers expect it to be water-clear with a fresh coconut aroma.
Which machines are needed to make virgin coconut oil?
You need a dehusker and deshelling machine, testa paring machines, a kernel washer and pulveriser, and a screw expeller for coconut milk. After that come chilling tanks, a separator such as a tubular bowl centrifuge or a VCO cooker, a vacuum dryer, filters and a bottle filler. Our sample prices this line at ₹75 lakh for 550 litres per day.
Is a virgin coconut oil business profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 550 litres per day unit earns a 25% return on investment in Year 3. Break-even is at 36% of capacity and payback takes about 3.3 years. Real results depend mostly on what you pay for coconuts, the oil yield you achieve, and how much oil you sell under your own brand rather than in bulk.
Which licence is needed to make and sell virgin coconut oil?
You need an FSSAI licence or registration, depending on your scale. The oil must also meet the FSSAI standard for virgin coconut oil, which limits moisture, acid value and peroxide value. You also need Udyam and GST registration and consent from the State Pollution Control Board. Requirements vary by state, so confirm them before you apply.
Is the sample virgin coconut oil project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
