What is a castor oil project report?

A castor oil project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a mill that presses castor seed in screw expellers and sells commercial grade oil and castor cake. It sets out the process, machinery, seed buying plan, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even a bank needs before funding the mill.

Entrepreneurs in the castor belt use it to size the mill and apply for a term loan. Lenders use it to test whether a thin crushing margin can repay the loan.

Also known as: castor oil mill project report, castor oil extraction project report, castor oil business plan, DPR for castor oil plant.

What a bank checks in a castor oil project report

A castor mill earns a small margin on a large volume of seed, so lenders look first at the numbers that show how much room the mill has. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.

73.8%Raw material share of sales (Year 3)

Castor seed is 96% of that cost. A banker will compare your seed and oil prices with current mandi rates before trusting the margin.

4.2%Net profit margin (Year 3)

The margin is thin, so a small rise in seed price or a dip in oil recovery can wipe it out. The report should test both.

1.28Lowest DSCR (Year 2)

Debt service coverage ratio (DSCR) is cash available for the loan divided by the instalment. It dips in Year 2, the first full year of principal repayment; the average is 1.47.

30 daysSeed stock in working capital

Seed reaches the mandis mainly after harvest. A mill that buys ahead for the lean months needs a larger cash credit limit than this.

Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, seed source and buyers.

Castor oil manufacturing process

Castor seed holds close to half its weight in oil. An expeller mill recovers most of it in seven stages and sells the rest locked in the cake.

  1. Seed cleaning

Seed is screened and destoned to remove husk, sand, stones and iron pieces that wear down the expeller worms.

  2. Conditioning

A steam-jacketed cooker heats the seed and sets its moisture so the oil cells release cleanly under pressure.

  3. Expelling

Screw expellers press the conditioned seed; oil runs out through the cage bars and cake leaves at the far end.

  4. Settling

Fresh oil rests in tanks so that fine seed particles, called foots, sink and can be sent back to the expellers.

  5. Filtration

A filter press polishes the oil to clear commercial grade, with filter cloth and filter aid replaced as they clog.

  6. Testing

Each batch is checked for acid value, moisture, colour and impurities against the buyer's grade before release.

  7. Packing and cake dispatch

Oil goes out in drums or tankers, and the cake is broken and sold to solvent plants or as organic manure.

Machinery for a castor oil expeller mill

Expellers take the biggest share of the machinery budget. Castor seed is hard on worms and cage bars, so the choice of expeller make also decides your spares bill.

Who buys castor oil, and what decides the price?

Castor oil is an industrial oil, not a cooking oil. Most of it goes to derivative makers, lubricant and paint companies and exporters, and India is the main supplier to world markets. Seed grows mostly in Gujarat, with Rajasthan next, so mills close to the north Gujarat mandis and the Kandla port belt have a freight advantage.

On 29 October 2026, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India quoted Gujarat castor seed at ₹85,250 per MT ex-mandi and commercial castor oil at ₹1,69,000 per MT. Seed and oil move together, so a mill's income is the spread between them plus what it gets for the cake.

  • Castor oil traders and exporters
  • Makers of hydrogenated castor oil and 12-hydroxy stearic acid
  • Lubricant and grease manufacturers
  • Paint, ink and resin makers
  • Soap, cosmetic and pharmaceutical units
  • Solvent extraction plants buying castor cake

Where a new mill wins: buying seed directly from nearby mandis in the weeks after harvest, and selling cake on short credit, matter more to profit than a slightly higher oil price.

Licences and approvals for a castor oil unit

Business registrationUdyam (MSME) registration and GST registration
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. CPCB lists oil mill ghani and extraction without hydrogenation or refining as Green; vegetable oils including solvent extracted oils are Red
Product standardIS 11486:2021, the BIS specification for castor oil, is the usual reference for grade and test methods
Factory licenceUnder the Factories Act where worker and power thresholds apply; rules vary by state
PowerIndustrial power connection sanctioned for the expeller and cooker load

Loans and schemes for a castor oil mill

Seed buying ties up a lot of cash, so most castor mills need a cash credit limit as well as a term loan.

PMEGP

Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh

Margin money subsidy of 15–35% of project cost for new units. Fits only a very small expeller unit.

Mudra

Up to ₹20 lakh under Tarun Plus

Tarun Plus is open to borrowers who have repaid a Tarun loan. Useful for a first expeller or a working capital top-up.

MSME term loan with CGTMSE

Guarantee cover up to ₹10 crore

The usual route for a mill the size of our sample, through banks that are CGTMSE member lenders.

Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.

Mistakes that weaken a project report on castor oil

  • Using the export price for sales

First grade oil quoted FOB Kandla in dollars is not what a small mill earns. Use ex-mill commercial grade rates, or revenue and DSCR come out too high.

  • Assuming the expeller gets all the oil

Expeller cake still holds oil. Take oil recovery from a trial crush of local seed, not from the seed's full oil content.

  • Valuing cake as cattle feed

Castor seed contains ricin, so untreated cake cannot go to feed. Price it at solvent plant or organic manure rates.

  • No seed stocking plan

Buying all year at spot prices, or stocking without a matching cash credit limit, leaves the mill short of seed or cash.

  • Leaving out expeller wear

Worms and cage bars wear quickly on sandy castor seed. Repairs and spares belong in the running cost.

Castor Oil project report: frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up a castor oil mill in India?

A small expeller unit making 1–2 MT of oil a day needs roughly ₹1–1.8 crore, and an integrated plant with solvent extraction needs about ₹8–20 crore. Our sample report models a 3.9 MT per day expeller mill at ₹388 lakh, including land, building and working capital margin. These ranges are indicative; your report works out the cost for your capacity and site.

Is the castor oil business profitable?

It can be, but margins are thin because castor seed is most of the cost. In our illustrative sample, net profit is 4.2% of sales in Year 3, return on investment is 16% and break-even is at 47% of capacity. Profit depends on buying seed well after harvest, oil recovery from your expellers and how quickly you sell the cake.

Which machines are needed to make castor oil?

A seed cleaner and destoner, a steam-jacketed cooker for conditioning, screw oil expellers, settling tanks and a filter press form the core line. Add a cake breaker, elevators and conveyors, a drum filling station and a small laboratory for acid value and moisture tests. In our sample, the expellers are the largest machinery item at ₹65.80 lakh.

What can be done with castor cake?

Expeller cake still holds some oil, so many mills sell it to solvent extraction plants that recover the rest. De-oiled castor meal is sold mainly as organic manure. Castor seed contains ricin, a toxic protein, so untreated cake must not be sold or used as cattle feed. The report should value it at manure or solvent plant rates.

Which pollution category does a castor oil mill fall in?

It depends on the process. CPCB lists oil mill ghani and extraction without hydrogenation or refining in the Green category, which covers a typical expeller mill. Vegetable oils including solvent extracted oils fall in the Red category, so adding a solvent plant needs stricter consent. Confirm the category with your State Pollution Control Board before you buy land.

Can I get a PMEGP or Mudra loan for a castor oil unit?

Only for a very small unit. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a margin money subsidy of 15–35%, and Mudra loans go up to ₹20 lakh under Tarun Plus. A mill like our sample usually takes an MSME term loan with a cash credit limit, often backed by CGTMSE guarantee cover.

Is the castor oil project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?

The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
