What is a polyacrylamide project report?
A polyacrylamide project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that polymerises acrylamide monomer into PAM flocculant powder. It sets out the gel process, monomer supply, machinery and buyer grades. It also gives the project cost, finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender checks before funding.
Chemical entrepreneurs and water treatment companies use it to size the plant and raise a term loan; banks use it to judge whether the plant can carry its debt.
Also known as: polyacrylamide plant project report, project report on polyacrylamide, DPR for polyacrylamide manufacturing, polyacrylamide business plan.
Polyacrylamide manufacturing plant cost in India
Our sample report models a 3.7 metric tonnes per day (MT per day) powder plant running 330 days a year, which gives 1,221 MT per year at full output. It starts at 60% of capacity and reaches 80% in Year 5, selling at ₹1,73,000 per MT before GST.
The margin per tonne is narrow. Total cost in Year 3 works out to ₹1,53,499 per MT against that selling price, so a few rupees per kilo on monomer or price changes the result.
| Land and site development | 52.68 |
|---|---|
| Building and civil works | 181.68 |
| Plant and machinery | 363.80 |
| Other fixed assets | 51.81 |
| Contingencies | 27.27 |
| Preliminary and pre-operative | 16.93 |
| Working capital margin | 49.48 |
| Total | 743.65 |
| Promoter's contribution (25%) | 185.91 |
|---|---|
| Term loan from bank (75%) | 557.74 |
| Cash credit limit (separate) | 148.45 |
| Total project cost | 743.65 |
DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is cash available for loan repayment divided by the instalments due; the sample's lowest year is 1.37. Term loan at 10.5% with a 6-month moratorium and 54 monthly instalments. All figures are illustrative.
Polyacrylamide manufacturing process
Most powder polyacrylamide is made by gel polymerisation of an aqueous monomer solution, then drying and grinding the gel. It is an addition reaction, so close to one tonne of monomer goes into each tonne of dry polymer, less moisture and fines losses.
- Monomer make-up
Acrylamide is dissolved in demineralised water and blended with sodium acrylate, made on site by neutralising acrylic acid with caustic soda lye; the ratio sets the anionic charge.
- Chilling and nitrogen purge
The solution is chilled close to freezing and sparged with nitrogen, because dissolved oxygen stops the chains from growing long.
- Gel polymerisation
A redox initiator starts the reaction in an insulated reactor. The heat of reaction warms the batch and turns it into a firm rubbery gel over a few hours.
- Gel cutting and granulation
The gel block is cut and minced into small granules, with a release agent so pieces do not stick together.
- Fluid bed drying
Hot air dries the granules to about 10% moisture; overheating breaks the chains and lowers molecular weight, so air temperature is controlled closely.
- Grinding and sieving
Dry granules are ground and screened to the particle size buyers specify; oversize goes back to the mill.
- Testing and packing
Each batch is checked for molecular weight, charge, residual monomer and dissolving time, then packed in lined 25 kg bags.
Which polyacrylamide form should your plant make?
Polyacrylamide is sold in four main forms, and the form decides most of the plant. Our sample report models a dry powder plant, the form that travels best and serves the widest set of buyers.
| Dry powder or granules | Gel polymerisation, drying and grinding. Highest solids, long shelf life and lowest freight per kg of active polymer. Needs chilling, a dryer and dust control. |
|---|---|
| Inverse emulsion (liquid) | Polymer made in water droplets dispersed in oil. Dissolves fast at the user's site; widely used in potable water, sludge dewatering and oilfield work. Needs oil and surfactant handling. |
| Aqueous solution | Low-solids viscous liquid made without drying. Simplest plant, but freight on water makes it a local product. |
| Aqueous dispersion | Oil-free brine dispersion, used mainly in wastewater treatment. |
Choosing the form: a new unit usually starts with anionic powder grades for water treatment and mining. Cationic grades follow once the process is stable, since their monomer costs more and the gel is harder to dry.
Raw materials for polyacrylamide production
Acrylamide monomer is bought as crystals or as a water solution and drives the cost of every tonne. In our sample, raw materials are 58.3% of sales, and acrylamide alone is 74% of that bill.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylamide monomer | 74% | 637.68 |
| Acrylic acid | 12% | 103.41 |
| Caustic soda lye | 6% | 51.70 |
| Initiators and process additives | 5% | 43.09 |
| Nitrogen gas | 3% | 25.85 |
| Total | 100% | 861.73 |
Monomer purity matters as much as price: metal ions and inhibitor left in the acrylamide shorten the chains and lower molecular weight.
Machinery for a polyacrylamide plant
The fluid bed dryer is the largest single machine cost in the sample, ahead of the polymerisation reactors. Contact parts are stainless steel, since iron contamination spoils the polymer.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| SS monomer dissolution and blending tanks | Make up the monomer solution and sodium acrylate | 36.38 |
| Monomer chilling and nitrogen degassing system | Cools the batch and strips oxygen | 36.38 |
| Adiabatic gel polymerisation reactors | Hold the batch while it turns into gel | 65.48 |
| Gel cutter and granulator | Breaks the gel block into granules | 36.38 |
| Fluid bed dryer with hot air generator | Dries granules without damaging chains | 80.04 |
| Grinding mill and vibro sieves | Sizes the powder | 32.74 |
| Brine chiller, cooling tower and boiler | Chilled water for the batch, steam and heat for drying | 43.66 |
| Automatic bag filling machine | Weighs and fills 25 kg bags | 14.55 |
| QC lab with viscometer and HPLC | Tests viscosity and residual monomer | 18.19 |
| Total plant and machinery | 363.80 | |

Manpower and utilities for a polyacrylamide unit
A gel plant usually runs round the clock, and the sample plant employs 37 people. Power and fuel cost ₹74.39 lakh in Year 3, or 5% of sales, mostly for the brine chiller, dryer air heating and grinding.
| Category | Number | Monthly wage (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Management, supervision and administration | 6 | 32,500 |
| Skilled workers and operators | 13 | 20,500 |
| Semi-skilled and unskilled workers | 18 | 13,500 |
| Total (Year 1 cost ₹84.54 lakh) | 37 |
The skilled group should include a polymer chemist for batch recipes and an analyst who can run residual monomer tests.
Licences and standards for a polyacrylamide plant
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. State lists based on CPCB criteria place organic chemicals manufacturing in the Red category; confirm how your state classifies a polymer unit before buying land. |
| Hazardous chemical rules | Acrylamide is listed in Schedule 1 of the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules, so storage, safety data sheets and on-site emergency plans must follow those rules |
| Product standard | IS 18103:2022 for polyacrylamide materials is the BIS reference; no Quality Control Order found as of October 2026 |
| Factory and fire | Factory licence or registration under the applicable labour law, and a fire NOC; rules vary by state |
| Buyer specifications | Water treatment buyers often ask for residual acrylamide of 0.05% or less, the limit used in the AWWA B453 standard |
Market and buyers for polyacrylamide in India
Demand follows water. New sewage treatment plants, effluent treatment at industrial units, paper mills, coal and mineral washeries and sugar mills all buy flocculants by the tonne. Much of the powder used in India has historically been imported, while Indian monomer capacity has grown since 2020.
- Municipal water and sewage treatment plants
- Industrial effluent treatment plant operators
- Paper and board mills
- Mining and mineral processing companies
- Sugar mills, for juice clarification
- Water treatment chemical distributors
How a new plant wins orders: buyers approve a grade only after jar tests or a plant trial. A unit that offers a lab, quick samples and on-site trial support gets approved faster than one that competes on price alone.
Mistakes that weaken a polyacrylamide project report
- One price for every grade
Cationic grades cost more to make and sell higher than anionic ones. A report that prices the whole output at one rate hides the real margin.
- No allowance for off-spec gel
An oxygen leak or an overheated dryer gives low molecular weight polymer that sells at a discount. Yield and rework must be in the numbers.
- Fast ramp-up assumed
Each buyer runs trials before ordering. Projections that start near full capacity overstate early cash flow and DSCR.
- Monomer price not stress-tested
Acrylamide is about three quarters of material cost. Lenders expect to see profit and DSCR at a higher monomer price.
- Safety costs left out
Closed monomer handling, dust extraction, a residual monomer lab and hazardous chemical compliance all cost money and affect consent approval.

Polyacrylamide project report: frequently asked questions
What is the cost of a polyacrylamide manufacturing plant in India?
A powder plant of 1–2 MT per day needs roughly ₹3–5 crore, and a 3–6 MT per day plant about ₹6–12 crore, including land, building and working capital margin. Our sample report models a 3.7 MT per day plant at ₹744 lakh. These are indicative figures; a project report works out the cost for your grades, capacity and location.
What raw material is used to make polyacrylamide?
Acrylamide monomer is the main raw material. In our sample report it is 74% of raw material cost, followed by acrylic acid at 12%, which is neutralised with caustic soda lye to give the anionic charge. Initiators, process additives and nitrogen gas make up the rest. Cationic grades also need a cationic comonomer, which raises cost.
What is the difference between anionic, cationic and non-ionic polyacrylamide?
The difference is the electrical charge on the polymer chain. Anionic grades, made with sodium acrylate, settle mineral and inorganic solids in water treatment and mining. Cationic grades carry a positive charge and suit sludge dewatering and paper retention. Non-ionic grades have little charge and work in acidic slurries. Each buyer picks a grade by jar test or plant trial.
Is polyacrylamide toxic or hazardous to make?
The finished polymer has low toxicity, but the acrylamide monomer is hazardous. IARC classifies acrylamide as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A), and it is listed under India's hazardous chemical rules. Plants handle it in closed systems with protective equipment, and water treatment grades are sold with low residual monomer, commonly 0.05% or less.
Is a polyacrylamide plant profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 3.7 MT per day plant earns a 17% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 42% of capacity and pays back in about 4.1 years. Margins are thin per tonne, so real profit depends on the acrylamide buying price, the grade mix and how quickly buyers approve your product after trials.
Is there a BIS standard for polyacrylamide?
Yes. IS 18103:2022, Plastics: Polyacrylamide materials, designation system and specification, is listed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. As of October 2026 we found no Quality Control Order making BIS certification compulsory for polyacrylamide, but buyers often ask for test reports against their own specification. Confirm the current position with BIS before you launch.
Is the polyacrylamide project report PDF free, and can I use it for a bank loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and grades.
