What is a plastic injection moulding project report?
A plastic injection moulding project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that melts PP or HDPE granules and injects them into steel moulds to make buckets, mugs, containers and moulded parts. It sets out the machines, moulds, raw materials, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even.
Entrepreneurs use it to plan the unit and apply for a term loan or PMEGP; banks use it to judge whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: plastic project report, plastic moulding project report, injection moulded plastic products project report, plastic manufacturing business plan.
What a bank checks in a plastic injection moulding project report
A credit officer looks first at resin cost, repayment strength in the early years, power and dealer credit. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.
Granules and masterbatch are the biggest cost. A report showing a much lower share is usually pricing the product above what wholesalers pay.
The debt service coverage ratio (cash available for loan payments divided by those payments) dips when full instalments start after the moratorium. Banks look at this year, not just the average of 1.52.
Barrel heaters, hydraulic pumps and the chiller run all shift. Lenders compare this with the connected load in the power sanction.
Trade receivables are the largest current asset in the sample, larger than resin and finished stock together. They set the cash credit limit.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your products, suppliers and market.
Plastic injection moulding plant cost in India
Cost rises with the number of machines, their clamping tonnage and the moulds you buy for each product. The large tier is the plant in our sample report; the other two are indicative ranges.
Starter unit
₹25–60 lakh
About 150–400 kg per day, 1–2 machines
- Machines and 3–6 moulds₹15–35 lakh
- Rented shed and fit-out₹3–10 lakh
- Working capital margin₹4–10 lakh
Fits PMEGP or Mudra, subject to limits
Mid-size unit
₹1.5–3 crore
About 600–1,000 kg per day, 4–6 machines
- Machines and moulds₹0.9–1.8 crore
- Shed or owned building₹30–80 lakh
- Working capital margin₹15–30 lakh
MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE cover
Large unit
₹559 lakh
1,800 kg per day, 5,94,000 kg per year
- Plant and machinery₹304 lakh
- Land and building₹152 lakh
- Working capital margin₹30 lakh
Term loan ₹419 lakh (75%), promoter ₹140 lakh
Starter and mid-size ranges are indicative and exclude land. Machine make, automation and mould steel move costs a lot.
Plastic injection moulding manufacturing process
Each part is made in one machine cycle, usually 20 to 90 seconds for household items depending on wall thickness. Cycle time and rejects decide output far more than machine count.
- Material preparation
PP or HDPE granules are mixed with colour masterbatch and a fixed share of reground runners and rejects.
- Drying and feeding
Vacuum loaders lift the blend into hopper dryers, which remove surface moisture before it reaches the barrel.
- Plasticising
Barrel heaters and the rotating screw melt the granules at about 200–250 °C into a uniform melt.
- Injection and holding
The screw drives the melt into the closed mould at high pressure, then holds pressure while the part packs out.
- Cooling and ejection
Chilled water from the chiller cools the mould; ejector pins push the part out when it is rigid.
- Finishing and regrinding
Runners and flash are trimmed, bucket handles are fitted and rejects go to the granulator.
- Inspection and packing
Parts are checked for weight, warpage and short shots, then nested and packed by size for dealers.
Raw materials for plastic moulded products
Polypropylene suits buckets, mugs and food containers because it is light, stiff and takes colour well; HDPE is used for tougher items such as crates and dustbins. Polymer makers revise prices every fortnight, so units hold about 30 days of stock.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Polypropylene (PP) granules | 62% | 319.43 |
| HDPE granules | 22% | 113.34 |
| Colour masterbatch | 8% | 41.22 |
| Metal handles and inserts | 5% | 25.76 |
| Additives and mould release | 3% | 15.46 |
| Total | 100% | 515.21 |
Kitchen and food containers need food-contact grade virgin resin; reground scrap is kept for buckets, crates and utility items.
Plastic injection moulding machines and moulds
Machine tonnage follows the largest item you plan to make: mugs and jars run on small machines, while 20-litre buckets and crates need the bigger ones. Moulds are bought per product, so the range you sell sets the mould budget.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Injection moulding machines (150 to 450 tonne) | Melt the resin and inject it into the mould | 158.19 |
| Product moulds | Steel tools that give each item its shape | 66.92 |
| Water chiller and cooling tower | Cool moulds and hydraulic oil | 21.29 |
| Hopper dryers and vacuum loaders | Dry and feed granules automatically | 15.21 |
| Scrap granulator | Grinds runners and rejects for reuse | 12.17 |
| Screw air compressor | Air for ejection and robots | 12.17 |
| Colour mixer | Blends granules with masterbatch | 9.13 |
| Testing and packing equipment | Weight and drop checks, packing | 9.13 |
| Total plant and machinery | 304.21 | |

Which plastic products to make, and who buys them
Household items move through wholesalers to utensil, kirana and general stores, and sell all year with a lift before festivals and the wedding season. Moulded components are made to order for other manufacturers and give steadier volumes at lower margins.
- Buckets, mugs, tubs and patlas for homes
- Kitchen storage jars and lunch boxes
- Crates, dustbins and utility containers
- Caps, closures and parts for appliance and packaging makers
- Supermarket and private-label household ranges
Where a small unit wins: buckets and tubs are bulky and light, so freight eats into the margin of brands shipping from far away. A unit within a day's truck run of its wholesalers can match them on landed price.
Licences and rules for a plastic moulding unit
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| GST rate | 18% for tableware, kitchenware and household articles of plastics (heading 3924), as notified in September 2025 |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; the category for moulding units differs by state |
| Single-use plastic ban | Plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, straws, stirrers and trays are banned since 1 July 2022, so keep them out of your product mix |
| Food-contact standard | IS 10910 covers polypropylene for safe contact with food and drinking water; buy certified food-grade resin for kitchen items |
| Factory and fire | Factory licence where worker thresholds apply, and a fire NOC for resin and finished-goods storage where required |
Rules were checked in October 2026 and differ by state. Confirm with your District Industries Centre and pollution board.

Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.
Mistakes that weaken a plastic moulding project report
- Counting machine hours, not cycle time
Output must come from shot weight, cavities and real cycle time for each item, or capacity is overstated.
- Budgeting for too few moulds
Each new size or design needs its own mould. A report that buys machines but only two moulds cannot reach the planned sales.
- Ignoring rejects and regrind
Short shots, warpage and runners must be ground and reused, and regrind cannot go into food containers. Yield needs to allow for both.
- Using one fixed resin price
Granule prices move every fortnight. The report should test a price rise against DSCR.
- Planning banned single-use items
Moulded cutlery, plates and cups are banned. Banks will not fund a product mix built on them.

Plastic Injection Moulding project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a plastic injection moulding business?
A one-machine unit making household items needs roughly ₹25–60 lakh, and a unit with four to six machines about ₹1.5–3 crore, including working capital margin. Our sample report models a 1,800 kg per day plant at ₹559 lakh with land and building. These are indicative figures; the cost of your unit depends mostly on machine tonnage and how many moulds you buy.
Which plastic products are banned in India?
Since 1 July 2022 India has banned identified single-use items such as plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, straws, stirrers, trays and candy and ice-cream sticks. Carry bags below 120 microns are also banned. Durable moulded goods such as buckets, mugs, tubs, crates and storage containers are not on this list.
What raw material is used in plastic injection moulding?
Most household and utility moulding uses polypropylene (PP) and HDPE granules, coloured with masterbatch. In our sample report PP is 62% of raw material cost and HDPE 22%. Polymer prices follow crude oil and change every fortnight, so the report should show how a price rise affects profit.
Is plastic injection moulding business profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 1,800 kg per day unit earns a 16% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 41% of capacity and pays back in about 4.2 years. Real profit depends on resin buying, cycle time, rejection rate, mould life and how many shifts the machines run.
Can I get a PMEGP or Mudra loan for a plastic moulding unit?
Yes, if the project fits the scheme. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, enough for a one or two machine unit. Mudra loans go up to ₹20 lakh under Tarun Plus. Larger units usually take an MSME term loan. PMEGP does not fund carry bags below 75 microns or recycled-plastic food containers.
Plastic ka business kaise shuru kare?
Start by choosing a product range, such as buckets and tubs or food containers, and the dealers who will buy it. Then size the machine tonnage and moulds to that range and find a shed with a three-phase power connection. Register on Udyam and GST, and get a project report for the loan and pollution consent.
Is the sample report free and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so do not submit it to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own products, capacity, location and loan scheme.
