What is a calcium gluconate project report?
A calcium gluconate project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that ferments dextrose into gluconic acid, neutralises it with calcium carbonate and crystallises pharma grade calcium gluconate. It sets out the process, machinery, raw materials, licences, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even.
Promoters use it to size the plant and raise a term loan; banks and investors use it to judge whether the plant can repay.
Also known as: calcium gluconate business plan, project report on calcium gluconate, calcium gluconate DPR, calcium gluconate plant feasibility report.

Calcium gluconate manufacturing process, step by step
The sample plant makes calcium gluconate by fermentation, with the calcium added inside the fermenter. A batch takes a few days from media preparation to dried crystals, and the fermentation stage sets the plant's output.
- Media preparation
Dextrose is dissolved with nitrogen and mineral nutrients and sterilised, so no wild organism competes with the culture.
- Seed culture
A pure Aspergillus niger strain is grown up in small seed fermenters before it is moved to the main vessels.
- Fermentation and neutralisation
Under strong aeration the mould oxidises glucose to gluconic acid, and calcium carbonate slurry neutralises it as it forms.
- Mycelium separation
The broth is heated to keep the salt dissolved and filtered on a rotary vacuum filter to remove the fungal mass.
- Decolourising
Activated carbon takes out colour and trace impurities, and sparkler filters give a clear liquor.
- Concentration and crystallisation
An evaporator concentrates the liquor, which is cooled slowly so calcium gluconate monohydrate crystallises.
- Centrifuging and drying
Basket centrifuges separate and wash the crystals, and a fluid bed dryer dries them at low temperature.
- Milling, testing and packing
Crystals are milled, sifted, tested batch by batch against the monograph and packed in lined bags or drums.
Which process route should a calcium gluconate plant use?
The route decides your raw material bill, the size of the plant and how much effluent you treat. Three routes are in use.
| Fermentation with calcium in the fermenter (sample route) | Cheapest raw material per kg, because you start from dextrose. Needs fermenters, sterile air, a seed lab and an effluent plant for spent broth and mycelium. |
|---|---|
| Neutralising bought gluconic acid or glucono delta lactone | A simpler, smaller plant: reactor, filter, crystalliser and dryer. Margins are thinner because you pay for the acid, so it suits a first unit or a buyer who already holds a drug licence. |
| Catalytic oxidation of glucose | Glucose is oxidised with air over a precious-metal catalyst. It avoids the culture and sterile handling but needs catalyst recovery and close process control. |
| What sets the batch size | Calcium gluconate dissolves only about 3 g per 100 ml in cold water, so the broth is kept dilute and hot until filtering. This limits sugar per batch and sizes the fermenters and evaporator. |
Choosing between the first two routes: compare the cost of gluconic acid with dextrose plus fermentation cost per kg. A report that tests both at current prices shows the bank why your route was chosen.
Raw materials for calcium gluconate
By the reaction alone, one kilogram of calcium gluconate monohydrate needs about 0.88 kg of dextrose monohydrate and 0.22 kg of calcium carbonate. Real use is higher, because fermentation never converts all the sugar. Dextrose price follows the maize crop, so plants buy from two or more starch processors and hold about a month of stock.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Dextrose (glucose) monohydrate | 62% | 474.77 |
| Precipitated calcium carbonate | 15% | 114.87 |
| Fermentation nutrients and corn steep liquor | 8% | 61.26 |
| Activated carbon | 7% | 53.60 |
| Filter aid and process chemicals | 8% | 61.26 |
| Total | 100% | 765.76 |
Raw materials are 49.6% of sales in the sample. Pharma grade needs low-heavy-metal calcium carbonate, so check supplier certificates before you lock in a price.
Machinery for a calcium gluconate plant
Fermenters with their sterile air system are the largest machinery cost in the sample, at about a third of the total. Contact parts are usually stainless steel 316, as the broth is acidic and the product goes into medicines.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Seed and production fermenters with sterile air system | Grow the culture and convert glucose under aeration | 148.05 |
| Media preparation and continuous sterilizer | Dissolves dextrose and sterilises the feed | 41.64 |
| Rotary vacuum drum filter | Removes mycelium from hot broth | 37.01 |
| Carbon treatment vessel and sparkler filters | Decolour and polish the liquor | 27.76 |
| Multiple effect evaporator | Concentrates the liquor with less steam | 60.14 |
| Cooling crystallisers | Grow monohydrate crystals | 46.26 |
| Basket centrifuges | Separate and wash crystals | 32.39 |
| Fluid bed dryer | Dries crystals at low temperature | 37.01 |
| Multimill, sifter and packing station | Sizes and packs the powder | 32.39 |
| Total plant and machinery | 462.65 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates. The QC laboratory, boiler and power backup sit under other fixed assets (₹75.74 lakh). Get current quotations before you finalise.
Manpower and power for a calcium gluconate plant
The sample plant runs with 35 people, including a microbiology and QC team that a drug licence requires by name. Power and fuel cost ₹94.25 lakh in Year 3, 6.1% of sales, mostly for aeration blowers, the evaporator and the dryer.
| Category | Number | Monthly wage (₹) | Year 1 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management, supervision and administration | 5 | 32,500 | 19.50 |
| Skilled workers and operators | 12 | 20,500 | 29.52 |
| Semi-skilled and unskilled workers | 18 | 13,500 | 29.16 |
| Total | 35 | 78.18 |
Licences and approvals to manufacture calcium gluconate
Pharma grade calcium gluconate is a drug substance, so the drug licence and GMP shape the plant layout from day one. These were checked with official sources in October 2026.
| Drug manufacturing licence | From the State Drugs Control Department under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Drugs Rules, 1945. Applications in the Form 24 series need a site master file, scale plans, machinery and QC equipment lists and named technical staff. |
|---|---|
| Good manufacturing practice | Revised Schedule M. The extension for manufacturers with turnover up to ₹250 crore ran to 31 December 2025, so a new plant should be designed to it from the start. |
| Product standard | IP, BP or USP monograph for pharma grade. Food grade follows the JECFA specification for INS 578: assay 98–102% on dried basis and lead not more than 2 mg/kg. |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, which applies CPCB's January 2025 sector classification. Plan an effluent plant for spent broth and mother liquor. |
| Factory and boiler | Factory licence, and registration of the steam boiler with the state boiler inspectorate |
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
Who buys calcium gluconate in India?
The steadiest demand is from makers of calcium injections, tablets and syrups, who buy IP, BP or USP grade under their own supplier approval. Calcium supplement brands, veterinary preparation makers and food fortification companies add volume at lower prices.
- Injection and parenteral formulation makers
- Tablet and syrup manufacturers
- Nutraceutical and calcium supplement brands
- Veterinary and animal feed supplement makers
- Food and beverage fortification companies
- Pharma raw material traders and exporters
How a new plant wins orders: imported material competes hard in food and feed grades. Pharma buyers pay more for a licensed Indian source with full batch documentation and short delivery times, but their vendor approval can take months.
Mistakes that weaken a calcium gluconate project report
- Using trader prices for sales
Trader listings mix technical and pharma grades. Price your output at ex-factory rates for the grade you will actually be licensed to sell.
- Taking theoretical yield
Fermentation leaves residual sugar, and some product stays in mother liquor. Output and raw material use must allow for both.
- Leaving out GMP and QC costs
Revised Schedule M needs clean areas, a QC laboratory, qualified staff and validation. Missing them understates both project cost and running cost.
- No time for vendor approval
Formulators test samples and audit the plant before ordering. A report that assumes full sales in month one overstates Year 1 cash flow.
- Under-sizing effluent treatment
Spent broth and mycelium carry a high organic load. A weak effluent plan delays pollution board consent and the start of production.

Calcium Gluconate project report: frequently asked questions
How much does a calcium gluconate manufacturing plant cost in India?
A small unit that neutralises bought gluconic acid at 1–2 MT per day needs roughly ₹2.5–4 crore. A fermentation plant of 4–5 MT per day needs about ₹8–12 crore with land and working capital margin. Our sample report models a 4,200 kg per day plant at ₹966.52 lakh. These ranges are indicative; your report costs your own capacity and site.
How is calcium gluconate manufactured?
Most plants ferment a dextrose solution with Aspergillus niger, which oxidises glucose to gluconic acid. Calcium carbonate added to the fermenter neutralises the acid as it forms, giving calcium gluconate in solution. The broth is filtered, decolourised with activated carbon, concentrated, cooled to crystallise the monohydrate, then centrifuged, dried, milled and tested against the pharmacopoeia monograph.
What raw materials are needed to make calcium gluconate?
Dextrose and precipitated calcium carbonate are the two main inputs. In theory one kilogram of calcium gluconate monohydrate needs about 0.88 kg of dextrose monohydrate and 0.22 kg of calcium carbonate. Fermentation nutrients, corn steep liquor, activated carbon and filter aid make up the rest. In our sample report dextrose is 62% of raw material cost.
Which licence is needed to manufacture calcium gluconate?
For IP, BP or USP grade you need a drug manufacturing licence from the State Drugs Control Department under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The plant must also meet revised Schedule M good manufacturing practice. You also need consent from the State Pollution Control Board, a factory licence, boiler registration for the steam boiler, and Udyam and GST registration.
Is calcium gluconate manufacturing profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 4,200 kg per day plant earns a net profit of ₹201.67 lakh on sales of ₹1,542.62 lakh in Year 3. Break-even is at 36.6% of capacity and the average DSCR is 1.77. Real profit depends on dextrose prices, fermentation yield, steam cost and how quickly formulators approve your material.
What is the difference between pharma grade and food grade calcium gluconate?
Pharma grade is made under a drug licence and GMP and tested to an IP, BP or USP monograph, with batch records that formulators audit. Food grade is tested to food additive specifications such as the JECFA monograph for INS 578. The chemistry is the same, but pharma grade needs tighter impurity control, a QC laboratory and documentation, and sells at a higher price.
Is the sample report free and can I use it for a bank loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, process route and location.
