What is a acetonitrile project report?

An acetonitrile project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that makes acetonitrile, a clear nitrile solvent, usually by reacting acetic acid with ammonia over a catalyst. It sets out the process route, machinery, raw materials, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender or investor checks.

Chemical companies, pharma groups planning backward integration and first-time investors use it to size the plant and raise a term loan; banks use it to test whether the plant can repay.

Also known as: acetonitrile manufacturing plant project report, project report on acetonitrile, acetonitrile business plan, methyl cyanide project report, DPR for acetonitrile plant.

Acetonitrile manufacturing plant cost in India: the sample plant

Our sample report models a 5.4 MT per day plant (1,782 MT per year at full capacity) running 330 days a year. It starts at 60% capacity and reaches 80% in Year 5, selling at ₹1,21,000 per MT before GST.

Why the DSCR is tight: raw materials take 59.4% of sales in the sample, so the lowest yearly DSCR (debt service coverage ratio, cash available to pay the loan divided by the instalments) is 1.21 in Year 2. A few rupees on the acetic acid price moves it more than any other line.

Term loan at 10.5% with a 6-month moratorium and 54 monthly instalments. All figures are illustrative.

Acetonitrile manufacturing process from acetic acid and ammonia

The reaction is CH₃COOH + NH₃ → CH₃CN + 2H₂O. Most of the plant's cost and energy goes into separating acetonitrile from the water the reaction makes.

  1. Feed vaporisation

Glacial acetic acid and a molar excess of ammonia are vaporised and preheated, since excess ammonia pushes conversion and limits side products.

  2. Catalytic reaction

The vapours pass over a phosphoric acid promoted alumina bed at about 350–400 °C, where acetamide forms and dehydrates to acetonitrile.

  3. Condensing and quenching

Hot reactor gas is cooled so acetonitrile, water and any unreacted acid condense, while ammonia stays largely in the vapour.

  4. Ammonia recovery

Unreacted ammonia is stripped from the condensate and recycled to the feed, which is a large part of keeping ammonia cost in line.

  5. Breaking the azeotrope

Acetonitrile and water form an azeotrope of roughly 84% acetonitrile, so two columns at different pressures are used to get past it.

  6. Finishing

A final column removes traces of water and by-products to reach industrial, pharma or HPLC grade, checked by gas chromatography and Karl Fischer titration for water.

  7. Storage and filling

Product is held under a nitrogen blanket and filled into drums, ISO tanks or road tankers.

Which route should an acetonitrile plant use?

The route decides your feedstock risk more than anything else. Much of the acetonitrile sold worldwide is not made on purpose: it is recovered from acrylonitrile plants.

By-product of acrylonitrileRecovered from propylene ammoxidation plants. Low cost, but output follows acrylonitrile run rates, not acetonitrile demand. Needs an acrylonitrile plant next door.
Acetic acid and ammoniaThe usual on-purpose route for a standalone plant, and the one in our sample. Simple fixed-bed chemistry; cost is set by acetic acid price.
Ethanol and ammoniaAmmoxidation or dehydrogenation of ethanol over metal catalysts. Worth a look where ethanol is cheaper than acetic acid per kg of product.
Solvent recoveryDistilling spent acetonitrile from pharma units back to specification. Lower capital, but supply depends on a few customers and quality varies batch to batch.

Route comparisons are qualitative. A full report compares yields, utilities and capital for the routes that fit your site.

Raw materials for acetonitrile

Glacial acetic acid is the cost driver. By stoichiometry, 1.46 kg of acetic acid makes 1 kg of acetonitrile. The gap between that and your real consumption is your yield loss, and banks look for it in the report.

Ammonia arrives as a liquefied gas in tankers and is stored in pressure vessels; acetic acid comes by road tanker from domestic producers or ports.

Machinery for an acetonitrile plant

The fixed-bed reactor and the distillation train together take 46% of the machinery budget in the sample. Columns are usually stainless steel because of the hot acid and ammonia.

Utilities and manpower for an acetonitrile plant

Steam for the column reboilers, thermic fluid for the reactor and chilled brine for the vent condensers are the main utilities. Power and fuel cost ₹85.02 lakh in Year 3 of the sample, 5.6% of sales.

Staff categoryNumberYear 1 cost (₹ lakh)
Management, supervision and administration519.50
Skilled workers and operators1127.06
Semi-skilled and unskilled workers1524.30
Total3170.86

A continuous plant runs three shifts, so operators and a shift chemist are needed round the clock.

Licences and approvals for an acetonitrile plant

Approvals take longer than construction for many chemical plants, so start them as soon as the site is fixed.

Environmental clearancePrior clearance under item 5(f), synthetic organic chemicals, of the EIA Notification, 2006. Most projects are appraised by the state (SEIAA); sites near protected or critically polluted areas go to the Ministry.
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. Organic chemicals manufacturing is a red category activity.
Hazardous chemicalsAcetonitrile is listed in Schedule 1 of the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules, 1989, which bring safety data, labelling and on-site emergency plans.
Ammonia storageA PESO licence under the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules to store anhydrous ammonia in pressure vessels.
Factory and fireFactory licence, fire NOC and building plan approval as required by the state.

Rules and categories are as checked in October 2026 and vary by state. Confirm with your State Pollution Control Board and PESO circle office.

Who buys acetonitrile in India?

Demand comes mostly from pharmaceutical units that use acetonitrile as a reaction and purification solvent, often in large volumes per batch. Buyers qualify a supplier before ordering: they test samples, audit the plant and then buy on approved-vendor terms.

  • API and intermediate manufacturers
  • Agrochemical manufacturers
  • HPLC and laboratory solvent packers
  • Oligonucleotide and peptide synthesis units
  • Vitamin and specialty chemical producers
  • Solvent traders and exporters

Where a new plant competes: by-product supply follows acrylonitrile output abroad, so landed import prices swing. A domestic on-purpose plant sells on steady supply, low water content and short delivery to pharma clusters.

Mistakes that weaken an acetonitrile project report

  • Pricing all output at HPLC grade

HPLC grade sells at a premium but is a small share of volume. Revenue built on it overstates DSCR.

  • Using theoretical acetic acid consumption

Losses in the reactor, columns and purge streams mean real use is above 1.46 kg per kg; the report must show the yield assumed.

  • Under-costing steam for the azeotrope

Pressure-swing distillation recycles a large stream between columns, and reboiler steam is a major running cost.

  • Ignoring catalyst regeneration

Higher bed temperature raises yield but cokes the catalyst faster. Plan downtime and replacement in the cost sheet.

  • Short working capital for vendor approval

Pharma buyers take months to approve a new source and then expect credit. Trade receivables are the largest current asset in the sample.

Acetonitrile project report: frequently asked questions

What is the cost of an acetonitrile manufacturing plant in India?

Our sample report models a 5.4 MT per day acetonitrile plant at ₹848 lakh, including land, building, machinery and working capital margin. As an indicative guide, a 2–3 MT per day unit needs about ₹5–7 crore and a 10–15 MT per day plant about ₹13–20 crore. Site, utilities already available and the purity grade you sell change the figure.

What raw materials are used to make acetonitrile?

On the acetic acid route the main inputs are glacial acetic acid and anhydrous ammonia. In our sample report acetic acid is 72% of raw material cost and ammonia 22%, with catalyst and process chemicals making up the rest. In theory 1.46 kg of acetic acid gives 1 kg of acetonitrile; real plants need more because of losses.

How is acetonitrile manufactured?

Acetic acid and excess ammonia are vaporised and passed over a promoted alumina catalyst at about 350–400 °C. Acetamide forms and loses water to give acetonitrile. The reactor gas is condensed, unreacted ammonia is recovered and recycled, and two distillation columns at different pressures separate acetonitrile from water before a finishing column brings it to grade.

Is acetonitrile manufacturing profitable?

In our illustrative sample, the 5.4 MT per day plant earns a 13% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at about 45% of capacity and pays back in about 4.6 years. Margins are thin because acetic acid is 59.4% of sales, so profit depends on buying acetic acid well and on the grade mix you sell.

Which approvals does an acetonitrile plant need?

Expect prior environmental clearance under item 5(f) of the EIA Notification, 2006. You also need consent from the State Pollution Control Board, where organic chemicals manufacturing is a red category activity, and compliance with the hazardous chemical rules, which list acetonitrile. Storing anhydrous ammonia in pressure vessels needs a PESO licence. Factory, fire and local approvals apply as for any chemical plant.

What is acetonitrile used for?

Acetonitrile is mainly a solvent. Pharmaceutical companies use it for API synthesis, crystallisation and purification, and laboratories use high-purity grades as the HPLC mobile phase. It is also an intermediate for agrochemicals and vitamin B1, and an extraction solvent for butadiene. Pharma and agrochemical makers are the main buyers in India.

Is the acetonitrile project report PDF free, and can I use it for a bank loan?

The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your capacity, route, site and lender.
