Best Business Opportunities in Nepal - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

Nepal encourages foreign investment both as joint venture operations with Nepalese investors or as 100 per cent foreign-owned enterprises. The few sectors that are not open to foreign investment are either reserved for national entrepreneurs in order to promote small local enterprises and protect indigenous skills and expertise or are restricted for national security reasons. Nepal is close to India and China which will have the largest surge in the middle class population in the history of the world. As families become smaller and wealthier, they will start eating well. Meat consumption will rise. It will take more agricultural resources to produce more meat. Buying shares in tourism-related stocks such as hotels, airlines or restaurants is a passive way to tap this potential. You can also open a resort or travel agency in anticipation of the boom. Nepal's exports of mainly carpets, clothing, hemp, leather goods, jute goods and grain

For the past few decades, the major investment opportunities have emerged sure to give us a proper financial result (i.e, collection of the investment and generation of profit from the invested capital) are Hydro-electricity generation, Tourism and Agriculture. Even though there are other sectors and opportunities to invest time, capital and labour in, these three are the most effective and productive in the long run.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture employs 76% of the workforce, services 18% and manufacturing and craft-based industry 6%. Agricultural produce – mostly grown in the Terai region bordering India – includes tea, rice, corn, wheat, sugarcane, root crops, milk, and water buffalo meat. Industry mainly involves the processing of agricultural produce, including jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain. In trying to increase agricultural production and diversify the agricultural base, the government focused on irrigation, the use of fertilizers and insecticides, the introduction of new implements and new seeds of high-yield varieties, and the provision of credit. Although new agricultural technologies helped increase food production, there still was room for further growth. Past experience indicated bottlenecks, however, in using modern technology to achieve a healthy growth.

Government efforts to boost the agricultural economy have focused on easing dependence on weather conditions, increasing productivity, and diversifying the range of crops for local consumption, export, and industrial inputs. Solutions have included the deployment of irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and improved seed varieties, together with credit provision, technical advice, and limited mechanization.

Agriculture provides agricultural raw materials to the industries and industries produce manufactured or finished products from those raw materials. Thus, we have seen that without agricultural raw materials, agro-based industries cannot run. The development of agro-based industries depends upon the availability of agricultural raw materials.

There may be investment opportunities in:

  • Dall Mill (Split Dalls/ Pulses for Chhilke-wali Moong, Urad, Arhar, Channa, Masoor)
  • Poha (Rice Flakes)
  • Atta, Maida Suji & Wheat Bran (Wheat Flour Plant) Roller Flour Mill
  • Rice Powder, Puttu and Wheat Powder
  • Biscuits & Candy
  • Rice Mill(Parboiled Rice)
  • Bakery industry, etc.

Hydropower Sector

The perennial nature of rivers and the steep gradient of the country's topography provide ideal conditions for the development of hydropower. Most of the power plants are run-of-river type with energy available in excess of the in-country demand during the monsoon season and deficit during the dry season. Nepal has a huge hydropower potential. Nepal's electricity generation is dominated by hydropower, though in the entire scenario of energy use of the country, the electricity is a tiny fraction, only 1% energy need is fulfilled by electricity. The bulk of the energy need is dominated by fuel wood (68%), agricultural waste (15%), animal dung (8%) and imported fossil fuel (8%). The other fact is that only about 40% of Nepal's population has access to electricity. With this scenario and having immense potential of hydropower development, it is important for Nepal to increase its energy dependency on electricity with hydropower development.

Much of the new hydropower capacity in Nepal will be built with a view to export electricity to meet growing demand for electricity in northern India, offsetting greenhouse-gas emissions by reducing the proportion of coal-burning stations in the electricity portfolio.

Mine and Mineral Industry

Minerals are the nonrenewable natural resources. Sustainable development of such resources helps to strengthen the national economy. Nepal is an underdeveloped country with vast natural resources such as water, minerals, forest, varieties of agricultural products and medical herbs. For the economic development of the country exploitation and proper use of such valuable resources, especially mineral resources, is extremely important. Small scale historical iron, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel mines and placer gold panning in the major rivers and many slate, quartzite, dolomite and limestone quarries were operational in many districts. Old working pits, audits, smelting places, scattered slag and remnant of mine materials stand as solid proofs of such mining activities in the past.

Limestone is by far the most important mineral resource in Nepal, followed by magnesite, lead and zinc, and marble. Limestone was mined for the production of cement and lime, as well as for construction materials. The mining sector, comprising numerous small-scale industrial minerals mining companies, was the smallest sector of Nepal’s economy.

All these indicate that Nepal is potential for metallic minerals but most of them are sub-economic to none economic prospect/ deposits.

India has established a large capacity of around 27 mn tonnes for solvent extraction, oil refining and vanaspati manufacturing. The working capacity is, however, placed at slightly over 24 mn tonnes. Capacity utilisation is about one-third in all major oilseed processing industries, crushing, refining and vanaspati manufacturing. With over 9% of world oilseeds production, 7% of global protein meal production, 7% of world oil meal export, total oilseeds production of 22 mn tonnes and 7 mn tonnes of edible oil production, India is the fourth largest edible oil economy in the world. And yet over 40% of the edible oil availability in the market is sourced from imports. The imports in the very recent period (November 2003 to April 2004) declined to 1.82 mn tonnes from 2.08 mn tonnes in the corresponding period during the preceding year. The government has, however, confirmed that there was no proposal to reduce the import duty on edible oils. The overall market is expected to grow to a level of 14 mn tonnes in 2006-07, 16 mn tonnes in the terminal year of the decade (2009-10) and eventually to over 20 mn tonnes at the end of the analysis period 2014-15. The near one million tonne branded oil market is currently growing at around 12% a year. Marico Industries is the market leader with its two main brands, Sweekar and Saffola, having 15% market share, followed by ITC Agrotech's Sundrop at 13%. CANNED FOODS CHOPPED TOMATOES, CHEEKED BEANS AND MUSHROOMS - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study

Most bacteria, yeasts and molds are difficult to remove from food surfaces. Washing fresh food reduces their numbers only slightly. Peeling root crops, underground stem crops, and tomatoes reduces their numbers greatly. Blanching also helps, but the vital controls are the method of canning and making sure the recommended research-based process times, are used. There are few vegetables that better mark the sweet juiciness of vine-ripened tomato. Tomatoes have fleshy internal segments filled with slippery seeds surrounded by a watery matrix. The healthy good looks of a fresh, red ripe tomato are not just skin deep. The tomatoes, for canning, should be moderately large, with a smooth surface to enable easy peeling, evenly ripened to the stem end with a red colour, and posses a large proportion of solid matter of good colour & flavour. Mushroom is an excellent source of protein, in addition to having a delicious taste. Hence, considerable advancement has been made in the cultivation, harvesting, storage, transportation, and market distribution of mushroom, besides developments in its processing. In India, mushroom is canned for the purpose of export. The domestic market is also picking up gradually. Mushroom is canned in the form of buttons, slices, stems and pieces; or as chopped, diced or fine cuts. Bean is highly variable species with a long history. Beans are a legume and thus acquire their nitrogen through an association with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The beans are smooth, plump, kidney-shaped, up to 1.5 cm long, range widely in color, and are often mottled in two or more colors. There is good export as well as domestic prospects for the canned foods. New entrepreneur enter in this project will be successful. Few Indian Major Players are as under: Agro Dutch Inds. Ltd. COW AND BUFFALO MILK UHT PLANT - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Every person needs good health and for good health we need good proteins. In these cases milk is the best way to achieve good health. This is the best source of vitamin and Enzymes. Milk is an opaque white liquid produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It provides the primary source of nutrition for young mammals before they are able to digest the other types of food. The exact components of raw milk varies by species, but it contains, significant amounts of saturated fat, protein and calcium as well as vitamin C. Cow milk has a PH ranging from 6.4 to 6.8, making it slightly acidic. Buffalo milk also contains high levels of the natural antioxidant to capherol. Peroxidate activity is normally 2-4 times that of cow milk. The high milk solids of buffalo milk not only make it ideal for processing into superb dairy products, but also contribute to significant energy saving in conducting that process. Yogurts are natural thick set without recourse to addition milk proteins or gelling agents as with lesser milks. Cow milk has been processed into dairy products. Such as cream, butter, yogurt, ice cream and especially the more durable and easily transportable product, cheese. Cow milk was first used as human food in the India. In India today, cows milk is produced on an industrial scale. It is by far the most commonly consumed form of milk in the India. The carbohydrate lactose gives milk its sweet taste and contributes about 40% of whole cow milks calories. Cow milk contains, on average, 3.4% protein, 3.6% fat, and 4.6% lactose, 0.7% minerals and supplies 66 kcal of energy per 100 grams. Cow milk allergy is as an immunologically medicated adverse reaction to one or more cow milk proteins. Cow produce bovine growth harmone naturally, but many producers administer additional rBGH because it increase milk production. The modern dairy cow the buffalo can thrive without the need to use high levels of concentrated feed. The UHT process other advantages, which arise from the fact that chemical reaction rates are less sensitive to changes in temperature than the thermal inactivation of spores. Therefore, the much shorter processing times required to achieve commercial sterility result in much less chemical reaction occurring, as well as allowing a continuous processing operation. The largest producer and consumer of cows milk in the world is India followed by the U.S., Germany and Pakistan. The demand of milk and milk products is increasing day by day. So there is good scope for dairy farming and dairy products manufacturing. New entrepreneurs can well venture into this field. Few Indian Major players are as under: Amrut Industries Ltd. The various pulses are part of the normal diet of all vegetarians and are also used frequently by non-vegetarians too. They are the main sources of protein. The pulses are used for preparing hot dishes, sweet dishes and other varieties. Pulses are the most common diet part of Indian families. Cleanly removing the peels and splitting the pulse grains in facts two pieces is the most desired form of dal to be cooked for the families. Dal is dry cereal, which is taken to fulfill the requirements of protein for a normal human being. The inner portion of the dal is rich in protein, vitamins and after cooking supplies the necessary nutrients. Due to the high content of proteins pulses are mixed in other cereal foods to increase the quality of proteins to be injected in the body. Pulses are the edible dry seeds of legumibous plants. The use of pulses as food is concentrated in developing countries, which account for about 90 per cent of global food pulse consumption. In low-income countries, pulses contribute about 10 percent of the daily proteins and about 5 per cent of energy requirements in human diets. Per capita consumption of pulses is also high among vegetarians, as a source of protein, and a high percentage of people in India are vegetarians. The important part of pulses play as a source of dietary protein, energy, minerals and vitamins for the redominantly vegetarian population of India, needs no reiteration and nutritionists regards pulses as an essential means to correct malnutrition. India has the distriction of being the worlds largest producer of grain legumes (Pulses) even if the production is not adequate to ensure a per capita availability of 80 grams, which is the minimum recommended by the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of India. Pulses are the chief source of protein for the majority of the population. There are over 1000 units at present engaged in processing of various pulses in different parts of the country. CANNED CARROT JUICE & BOTTLE GOURD/LONG MELON (LAUKI KA JUICE) IN ASEPTIC PACKAGING - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials

The juice of fresh vegetables is the richest available food sources of vitamins, minerals & enzymes. Usually we just cannot eat enough raw vegetables in a day to nourish our body properly. It is especially true today; we need extra nutrients to help our body detoxify a large amount of environmental toxins. Sometimes we probably cannot find the time to drink their nutritional equivalent in a delicious, nutrient-rich glass of juice. That is why juicing is such an important addition to a busy life style. Vegetable juices are attracting more attention due to the nutritional & phytochemical value of many vegetables. Tomato juice & blends based on tomato have long been popular and account for over 90% of the non-vegetable juice trade. Most vegetables are not particularly high in sugars and tomato excepted are low in acids, resulting in PH values generally over 4.5 consequently, the juices are more subject to microbial spoilage and require either PH reduction, thus changing the vegetable character, or more stringent process to eliminate potentially dangerous microbes. There are a number of units involved in converting whole fruits to the desired juices, puree or pulp. Vegetable handling depends upon the process design. In some circumstances, cleaning, sorting and inspection precede in plant storage or the operations can be repeated immediately prior to juicing. Due to health consciousness in todays generation, the demand of fruits and vegetable juices are increasing day by day. Among the fruit juice beverages are fruit juices (Pepsi's Tropicana), nectars (Dabur's Real) and fruit drinks (Frooti and Slice). All these are real, reconstituted from fruit pulps or concentrates. The leading fruit juice brands include Real, Onjus, Tropicana, Frooti, Jumpin. The fruit drinks are mainly based on oranges, mangoes, pineapples, grapes, apples, guava and tomato. They only differ in pulp content: the juices have over 85%, nectars (20% to 85%) and fruit drinks (less than 20%). The branded fruit juices market inclusive of nectars is placed at about Rs 10 bn. The pure fruit juices are the preferred drink among the fruit drinks. This segment is growing at around 10% annually. The market for fruit juices is expected to grow to Rs. 7.50 bn by end 2009-10 from nearly Rs. 4.75 bn presently. So there is very good domestic as well as export market for vegetable juices.
